Sen. Barack Obama will announce his choice of running mate with a national text message blast to supporters, in a gambit to grow the ranks of his cell phone organizing network, dubbed "Obama Mobile" by the campaign. The Washington Postexplains:
Four years ago, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) announced his vice presidential nominee … at a morning rally in Pittsburgh. How times change. Last night, in a cell phone text message that was quickly followed by an e-mail linking back to a new page on his Web site — my.barackobama.com/vp— aides to Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) campaign wrote: "Barack will announce his VP candidate choice through txt message between now & the Conv. Tell everyone to text VP to 62262 to be the first to know! Please forward."
Actually, Kerry’s first announcement came in an overnight emailto supporters before the rally. Yet text messages promise even more immediate impact. After using the VP announcement as bait, Obama should have many thousands more supporters who can be mobilized by cell. The campaign used texts in the primaries to organize volunteers and provide real-time information; during the Iowa caucus, it updated precinct captains on progress in counties across the state. For younger voters not as obsessed with the veepstakes, the campaign has promoted Obama Mobile by offering free ring tones that splice Obama speeches with rap and techno beats. Oh, and if you’re not in that age bracket, you probably need a translation of this post’s headline. It’s: Obama Totally Texting Vice President Any Day Now.
