For weeks, the people of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District have known that their eight-term representative, Democrat Albert Wynn, was on his way out the door. What they didn’t imagine is that he would leave them hangingout to dry in the process.
But Wynn, who was defeatedin last month’s Democratic primary by public interest attorney Donna Edwards, shocked his constituents on Wednesday by announcing that he will vacate his seat in June, choosing to take a lucrative position with a lobbying firm rather than ride out the remainder of his lame-duck term.
The news leaves the state with two options, and neither of them good: Either Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) can stage a special election — in which case the taxpayers would pick up the millions of dollars in costs — or the seat can remain empty until 2009, in which case the people of the 4th District would have no House representation for the last six months of 2008.
There are any number of ways to characterize the sheer shamelessness surrounding Wynn’s exodus, but perhaps none so terse as that found in a pointed Washington Post editorialyesterday:
If any of his constituents were wondering whether they made the right choice in voting to dump Mr. Wynn in the Democratic primary, his contempt for public service should set their minds at ease.
