How Long Will The Troop Pause Be?

Levin asked Petraeus about how long his desired troop pause will be. There’s going to be a period of evaluation, the general said, then a “process of assessment.” Levin called that “a clear open-ended pause.”
Recommending further troop withdrawals will occur “when conditions [for additional security are] met,” Petraeus replied. “As conditions are met for further reductions, we’ll make those recommendations.”
And how long will that take? Levin asked? A month? “It could be less,” Petraeus said. “It could be” more. “Sir, it’s when conditions are met.” He also declined to say how many U.S. troops would remain in Iraq at the end of 2008 if all goes well.
