Is The War Worth It? Meh.

Last September, Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) stole the show by asking Gen. Petraeus if the war was worth it, and Petraeus — though he backtracked — said he didn’t know. Warner just re-asked the question: “Is all of this sacrifice bringing about a more secure America?”
Petraeus said the question is ”perhaps best answered by folks broader view, and ultimately by history.” The war has “huge cost,” including more than 4000 troops who have made “the ultimate sacrifice.” But there is “no longer a ruthless dictator in Iraq [who] threatened his neighbors” and his people.” There’s a “nascent democracy,” although “the germination of these seeds are uneven but there has been growth.” He said “weighing the overall scales is difficult,” and “ultimately, only history” can answer.
Warner was kind of incredulous. I guess he was fishing for Petraeus to give an unequivocal statement, though his own maneuvers on Iraq are dizzying. “It was a fairly simple question,” Warner lamented.
“I do believe it is worth it, otherwise I would not — you do what you’re ordered to do, but sometimes you’re asked — and I took on the task of Multinational Forces-Iraq because I do believe it’s worth it.”
i have thoughts on it… huge costs, over 4000 ult sacrif, … strain on overall force, opptny cost… no longer a ruth dict in iraq threatened neighbors … nascent democracy… though germin of this seeds uneven has been growth… weighing overall scales is difficult… ult only history … more imp q: how best to achieve our interests in iraq. … for safe/sec our country, iraq, ME region,.. do blve made progress, blve rex
warn: was a fairly simple question. for those at home! up to 80 percent am don’t accept presence. simpl lang, yes it is?
p: i do blv it is worht it, otherwise i would not — you do what you’re ordered to do, but sometimes yr asked — and i took on the task of MNFI bc i do believe it’s worth it.
