Sen. Reed just gave Amb. Crocker an ulcer. Who besides the “Special Groups” gets support from the Iranians? It’s our friends, isn’t it?
Crocker tried veryhard to answer the question dishonestly. Instead of leading off his answer by citing the Iranian-supported U.S. allies the Islamic Supreme Council in Iraq and Maliki’s Da’wa Party. “The Followers of God in Basra… they almost certainly get [support] from Iran,” Crocker said, citing an extremely obscure Shiite sect. “Also something called Iraqi Hezbollah. … Iran has the tactic, as we’ve seen in Lebanon, of courting a number of different –”
Reed was tired of it. What about ISCI and its militia, the Badr Corps?
“I’d put that in the second category,” Crocker said, staring at the table. Iran has a dialogue with everyone… and not just the Shia community. What has happened with the Supreme Council and Badr, they’ve basically gotten out of the overt militia business.” What a qualification! Our Iranian-supported allies: now only a secretcluster of death squads! God, that was totallyworth 4,000 American lives!
