Buddy Roemer tells Colbert he doesn’t have the ‘PAC money required’ for Ames

“Electability should not be discussed in terms of who can raise the most money, but rather who has the best ideas to raise America. We can reform American politics and here is my pledge to help us start: I will accept only contributions up to $100 per individual contributor. No PAC or special interest money will be accepted. Only individual contributions with a name and an address, and all will be reported, although not required under the current law. Today, I declare my independence from moneyed special interests,” Roemer said when announcing his exploratory committee in March.
He admitted while a guest on the Stephen Colbert Show on Comedy Central Thursday night that taking such a pledge has harmed his chances at the upcoming Ames Straw Poll, a Republican Party of Iowa event where lesser-known candidates bid on booth space in order to earn a slot on the ballot.
“Why aren’t you on the ballot?” asked Colbert.
“Ahh… it’s called 15,000 dollars,” Roemer responded. “That is the price of having a booth to participate in the ballot — and I love Iowa. I’m a farmer; I’m a cotton farmer [it's] the way I grew up. There are farmers there [and] I love going to get the votes. But I do not have the PAC money required to make that sort of investment.”
Colbert, who stuck his head in a modified trash can to keep his own Super PACfrom directly communicating with Roemer in connection with Iowa, allowed Roemer a few minutes to speak directly with Iowa caucus-goers and straw poll ballot-casters. What Roemer had to say is embedded in the video below:
