After announcing that he would not mount a campaign against Sen. Debbie Stabenow earlier this year, former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra is now set to announcethat he will challenge her for a seat in the Senate in 2012.
But Hoekstra reversed course after seeing a dearth of qualified candidates with statewide name recognition and fundraising ability step up to run, and a hard press from state party officials, said one top Republican source in Washington who asked not to be identified since Hoekstra has yet to make his announcement public. Such an announcement is expected soon.
A knowledgeable House Republican aide told The News that Hoekstra called Michigan House Republicans to say he was running.
At the same time, another challenger is emerging — Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner John McCulloch announcedthat he would run against her as well. What once looked like an empty GOP field is now becoming crowded.
