Groups of postal service employees will protest the possible downsizing of the U.S. postal service at rallies all over Florida tomorrow.
“Save America’s Postal Service” is hosting rallies(.pdf) at the offices of congressional representatives all over the state.
It was recently announced that the U.S. Postal Service is planning to shut down “more than 250 mail-processing facilities and downsiz[e] its national transportation network,” according to The Los Angeles Times.
The postal service has already shut down 200 plants and cut over 100,000 jobs, and is now looking to cut another 35,000 employees. The move could impact hundreds of postal service workers throughout the state of Florida.
The Timesreported:
The American Postal Workers Union denounced the plan, which they said was made public without advance consultation.
“Degrading service is not the answer to the Postal Service’s problems,” union President Cliff Guffey said in a statement. “The Postal Service should be urging Congress to address the cause of its problems — not slashing service and demolishing its network.”
The changes being proposed will need to be approved by Congress before moving forward.
