More than 80,000 acres burned by Las Conchas fire
The Las Conchas fire has now burned more than 80,000 acres as of Wednesday night, leaving Los Alamos National Laboratory closed through at least Friday.
LANL says that no fires are burning within its 36 square miles of land, and fire crews are working on thinning fuels and improving existing fire roads. Some 10,000 experiments running on site have been halted.
“We’re at what’s normally week two of the fire, and it’s day three,” fire information officer Rod Torrez said to the Albuquerque Journal.
The fire has burned over 125 square miles and is 3 percent contained.
Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour are forecast for today.
