Long-time supporter of the tea party movement, U.S. Rep. Steve King(R-Kiron) won’t make the June 13 initial launch of the Iowa Tea Party bus tour, but he wants to make sure that the group knows he remains with them in spirit.
The three-week tour plans stops in 20 cities, beginning in Council Bluffs on June 13 and continuing toward a finale in Des Moines on July 2.
In a pre-recorded video message, King notes that the activists attending the tour have an opportunity speak out about “the new platform” and to help 2012 candidates shape their messages. He also, of course, offers an obligatory swipe at President Barack Obama.
“We must defeat Barack Obama and make him a one-term president,” King said. “He has run this country into debt that will take us a long time for us to get out of.”
Watch the video:
To date, four committed 2012 Republican hopefuls and one potential presidential candidate have agreed to meet with the tea party activists participating in the tour. Those politicians are U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, Atlanta businessman Herman Cain, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum. The hopefuls are not expected to be present at the same time, and the exact dates for each appearance has not yet been released.
Invitations have also been extended to the campaigns of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
According to the organization’s website, the purpose of the tour is two-fold:
  • To bring issues such as adhering to our Constitution, returning to the Gold Standard, tax reform and a balanced budget into the forefront of the debate.
  • To train activists in precinct and caucus organization for the candidate of their choosing.
Organizations listed as “friends of the bus tour” are the Iowa Grassroots Coalition, American Principles in Action and the Leadership Institute. The Iowa Tea Party blog notesorganizers were in Council Bluffs and Omaha over the weekend “for a training conducted by one of our sponsors, Leadership Institute.”
Readers wanting more information on the tour can find updates on the tour’s Facebook page.
