Gingrich announces he is in for 2012 presidential run
Former Speaker of the U.S. House Newt Gingrich has officially thrown his hat into the presidential ring.
Gingrich, a Georgia resident, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. He is the first GOP prospect to make a bid for the White House in 2012.
“I’m Newt Gingrich, and I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States because I believe we can return America to hope and opportunity, to full employment, to real security, to an American energy program, to a balanced budget,” he said in a video Wednesday.
Links to the announcement were also posted on the former Congressman’s official Facebook page.
Gingrich is scheduled to appear as a guest on FOX commentator Sean Hannity’s television show at 8 p.m. tonight.
Fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) said he will decide on his own White House bid this week.
