McCain Camp to Host ‘Virtual Town Hall’

In a new effort to use the magic of the Internet to connect with voters, the McCain campaign announced today that it will host a "virtual town hall" Saturday that will target Democratic and independent voters. According to the press release, the virtual town hall will feature Sen. John McCain and the campaign’s finance director, Carly Fiorina, and "Many town hall participants are expected to be former supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton’s campaign." While it may be true, it is quite a statement given the recent backlash from female Clinton supporters against McCain’s overtures.
From the release:
The town hall is part of the campaign’s effort to build on growing support from voters who are rapidly joining "Citizens for McCain," a new grassroots organization headed by Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to rally Americans of all political parties to support John McCain’s candidacy.
"The American people know I have a long record of bipartisan problem solving," said John McCain. "They’ve seen me put our country before any president, before any party, before any special interest — and before my own interest. They might think me an imperfect servant of our country, which I surely am, but I am her servant first, last and always. I look forward to talking to voters across the country of all parties to present them with my vision for the future of our great nation."
WHAT: Virtual Town Hall Meeting
WHO: John McCain & RNC Victory Chair Carly Fiornia [sic]
WHEN: Saturday, June 14, 2008
3:30p.m. ET
PARTICIPATE: To participate, the general public should please visit cityhall.johnmccain.com.
Town hall meetings are McCain’s preferred format for communicatingwith voters. He was roundly mockedin the media — even by friendly conservative columnists— for coming off as unnatural and green during a recent speech in New Orleans. But with near-constant campaign coverage on the cable news networks, will voters — especially those not pre-disposed to support McCain — take time from their Saturday afternoon to tune in online?
