President Obama raised $1 million for House Democrats last night at a fundraiser in Los Angeles at the home of John Wells, a producer of television shows such as West Wing, ER and China Beach. The price of attendance was $2,500 per person, but co-hosts — who included J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg, Kate Capshaw, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Barbra Streisand — paid $30,400 per couple.

A few flowery passages from the rather lyrical pool report are worth quoting:

First the scene: the pool was ushered back through the Wells’ estate and onto a veranda overlooking a walled courtyard with a pool, surrounded by grass lawn, manicured lemon trees, sage, rose bushes and Japanese maples. The crowd milled around, drinking wine brought by waiters. A string quartet stood down as first Chris Van Hollen spoke, then Nancy Pelosi, who praised “a very, very successful event,” then introduced Potus.

He bound on to a brightly lit stage at 7:22, the air cool, the sun softening, and declared, “What a spectacular evening. Let’s just hang out.”

Despite his inclination, Potus didn’t stay long:

“Even as the other side wants to offer fear, we’re going to offer hope,” he concluded at 7:51, wrapping up a half-hour speech to loud applause.

He did not linger. The motorcade zipped back to Beverly Hills as the sun set over Olympic Boulevard. Good night, all.

I’m at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington for “Afghanistan: Planning for Success,” the first conference put on by the Foreign Policy Initiative, the new neoconservative think tank/messaging operation. Before the first panel kicked off, FPI directors Bill Kristol, Dan Senor and Robert Kagan milled around in the hall, near the breakfast table, along with Cliff May, Randy Scheunemann, James Kirchick, and David Asdenik.

Two West Wing stars, Martin Sheen and Brad Whitford, happened to be walking through the hotel as attendees rolled in. That got a few people at the registration table whispering, but not quite as much as the arrival, right before the panel, of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby. He slowly made his way into the room, talking with well-wishers, getting updates on how their families were doing.
