I’m thrilled and proud to introduce the newest member of the TWI team, Annie Lowrey. Annie is wrapping up her illustrious stint as an assistant editor at Foreign Policy; previously, she worked in the Washington bureau of The New Yorker.

With the health care debate now (more or less) behind us, lawmakers and the public are turning their attention to financial regulation and job creation. Annie’s sharp journalistic instincts and firm grasp of the workings of this city we call home will serve her well as she tackles these and other issues.

Officially, her first day at TWI is tomorrow, but she couldn’t quite wait that long to get started — be sure to read her post on Goldman Sachs from this morning.

TWI’s Mary Kane Takes Multiple SPJ Awards for Foreclosure Crisis Reporting

Anybody who’d been following the ace reporting of TWI’s Mary Kane on the foreclosure crisis knows she’s one of the best in the business. Still, it’s nice for her to receive some official recognition of that fact.

At the Society of Professional Journalists DC Pro Chapter’s Dateline Awards Dinner on Tuesday, Mary — who was up against some of the best reporters in Washington — took first place in the “Best Feature in a Daily Newspaper” category for a heart-wrenching story she wrote about one Northern Virginia immigrant’s eviction during the holiday season. Mary also took second place in the “Best Business Reporting in a Daily Newspaper” category for a two-part series on foreclosures in Prince George’s County, Md.

TWI is very fortunate to have a reporter of Mary’s caliber digging up the real-life stories of the people at the center of the housing crisis. Congratulations, Mary. You deserve it!

TWI Drives the Debate on MSNBC

If you happened to catch The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC last night, you saw TWI Legal Correspondent Daphne Eviatar breaking down the pros and cons of Sen. Patrick Leahy’s (D-Vt.) proposed “truth commission” to investigate the Bush administration’s alleged crimes. Daphne also talked about the problem that statutes of limitations on torture may pose for possible prosecutions of Bush administration officials, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) predicted during an interview with Rolling Stone.

You might also notice that TWI is listed in the segment as the source of a quote from former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Thanks to some very heads-up reporting by our own David Weigel, who ran into Gonzales at a forum in Washington Thursday, Gonzales is on the record saying he’ll cooperate with a truth commission.

But there’s more. If you saw MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, you would have seen that the meat of Olbermann’s No. 5 story was … Gonzales’ comments. Unfortunately, you wouldn’t have had any idea that TWI was the source of the comments. (To be fair, Olbermann has cited TWI’s work previously with attribution, so we’re willing to forgive last night’s oversight.) Anyway, here’s the Countdown segment (skip two minutes in):
