President-elect Barack Obama took a question on his “team of rivals” at a press conference in Chicago this morning, where, as Matt DeLong notes, Obama officially tapped Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Sec. of Defense Robert Gates to join his Cabinet.

As I noted in a piece this morning, many progressives have been critical of Obama’s decision to bring Clinton-era moderates into his tent. Why is the left being left out, they’ve asked?

Obama responded that he is a “strong believer in strong personalities and strong opinions,” that will prevent his administration from getting “wrapped up in group think,” which has hurt past presidents. For more, see Spencer Ackerman’s post on Obama’s repudiation of President Bush.

Obama also said that there is a common thread among all team members. Each shares his “core vision” on foreign policy which includes supporting both a strong military and diplomacy.

And the final say on vision and policy will be his, Obama said. “The buck stops here.”
