Some Republican Senate Optimism

Just as they lose Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), Republicans are getting a few breaks that could sustain them through the 2010 cycle.
- Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), one of the last Republican stars in suburban Chicago, is considering running for President Obama’s old Senate seat, currently occupied by Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.), who has reached an [...]

Burris Will Be Seated

Senate Democratic leaders have agreed to seat Roland Burris after a week-long battle to prevent him from replacing President-elect Barack Obama as the junior senator from Illinois.
Burris was appointed Dec. 30 by disgraced Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, less than a month after the governor was arrested for allegedly scheming to “sell” the seat.

Burris Win Could Spell Trouble For Franken

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune points out today what we did yesterday: Senate Democrats — having made state-based election certification a mandatory condition for seating Illinois appointee Roland Burris — might be waiting awhile for the arrival of Minnesota Democrat Al Franken. From the Star-Tribune:
Democratic leaders made Burris’ claim on the seat contingent on his ability to [...]

The Continuing Republican Campaign For Black Justice

The conservative CNS News site gets Michael Steele (about whom you can find more here) on record, telling Democrats to seat Roland Burris as the junior senator from Illinois.
Now, the Democrats have got their hands full, because they can seat him or not seat him, and the reality of it for them is there’s no [...]

Burris Turned Away by Senate

The soap opera continues …
The secretary of the Senate this morning refused to seat Roland Burris, the former Illinois attorney general picked by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the upper chamber. Burris and Blagojevich have both insisted that the appointment is legal, despite the governor’s arrest last month [...]

Dems Diffuse a Controversy, Won’t Seat Franken Today

Well, that was the quick way to avoid charges of hypocrisy.
In the face of Republican opposition to the seating of Minnesota Democrat Al Franken, who was named the winner of his Senate contest yesterday, Senate Democrats have decided that Franken won’t be sworn in with the rest of the chamber this afternoon.
Democrats had hoped to [...]

Franken, Burris Pose Dilemma for Democrats

Democrats find themselves in a pickle over how to seat Al Franken, but skirt Roland Burris.

Will Blagojevich Win the Bluff Over Burris Appointment?

It wasn’t the way the Democrats wanted to ring in the 111th Congress, particularly following their sweeping election wins in November.
Yet it appears that Roland Burris, the former Illinois attorney general appointed by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) last month to fill Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat, has every intention of arriving at the [...]

The Senate’s Crusade to Stay a 98-Member Chamber

In eighth-grade civics, I learned that the U.S. Senate had, and would continue to have, 100 members. Well, Mr. Miller, seems you didn’t tell me the whole story.
When the new Senate is sworn in next week, it will most likely be a team of 98, following declarations by Senate leaders that Minnesota and Illinois will [...]

Let the Blago Showdown Begin

So does Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich have the right to appoint Roland Burris as the next senator from Illinois or doesn’t he?
A helpful analysis from CNN.com notes the following:
Article 1, Section 5 of the Constitution gives Congress the power to be “judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members.” Democratic senators in [...]
