My profile of WorldNetDaily made the case that the conservative Website, which opinion-makers brush off as a conspiracy hub, is actually incredibly influential on the right. Here’s some evidence for that argument.

For months — really since it was announced at the How to Take Back America Conference — WND has backed a campaign to send “pink slips” to members of Congress. Upon the sending of the five millionth pink slip, WND held a press conference yesterday on Capitol Hill, drawing actual GOP members of Congress, including Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) and Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.). After the jump, pictures of Bachmann and Gohmert with WND Editor Joseph Farah, one of the driving forces of the “birther” movement.

Toward the end of my lengthy interview with California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore — my second interview to date with the conservative GOP candidate for U.S. Senate — I asked him to respond to a Huffington Post story that made much out of his friendship with part-time Obama birth conspiracy theorist Floyd Brown. I’ve gotten some media questions about the excerpt I posted, so here is his whole answer to that question.

Yeah, my only comment on that is that the president is doing himself no favors by spending millions of dollars to block the release of documents surrounding his birth certificate. And as long as the president keeps fighting tooth and nail to prevent the release of such things, I think people are going to remain skeptical. Now, that having been said, the Natural Born Citizen requirement of the Constitution was never put into statutory, enabling language, so there is no statutory requirement for secretaries of state around the country to verify one’s citizenship eligibity when one files to run for president of the United States. And so clearly, from a political standpoint, it was probably incumbent on Sen. [Hillary Rodham] Clinton’s campaign to push the issue back when they raised it. And having been unsuccessful, it seems to me it’s kind of hard to undo.

Just like the impeachment, with [President Bill] Clinton, my concern over issues like this is that, just as with Clinton, there are policy matters that I profoundly disagree with the current president on. And to the degree that we get distracted into these secondary questions, it begins to allow the president and his allies to shift the debate on an issue that is going to be very hard for us to win, while at the same time allowing them to escape the sort of scrutiny on the policies that we need to engage in to win. To win on our issues.

I was a little surprised that DeVore didn’t knock this down harder; it seems to be stinging him today.

UPDATE: A statement from the candidate:

I said ten years ago that the move to impeach and convict President Clinton was a distraction from countering his liberal policies. So too is the effort now to question President Obama’s legitimacy. Make no mistake, the Constitution is clear: Barack Obama is the President. The more time Carly Fiorina’s campaign spends on this side issue, the less time we have to work against the far-left agenda and failed policies of President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Senator Boxer.

Orly Taitz, who really should be worrying about the final judgment ordering the U.S. Attorney to collect $20,000 from her, has filed a new sheaf of nonsense arguing that the long-awaited dismissal of Phil Berg’s birther lawsuit proves that her lawsuits really have legs.

The plaintiff in Berg was seeking Declaratory and Injunctive Relief under Article 2 Section 1 Natural Born Citizen and under 42 USC §1983, seeking determination of eligibility for presidency of Barack Husein Obama. In his opinion judge Sloviter finds that though the election is over, the court has jurisdiction to hear it as it “fits squarely” as an issue “capable of repetition yet evading review”.Merle v US, 351, 3d 92,94 (3d Cir 2003) Based on this argument there is Article 3 jurisdiction to hear the case as long as the plaintiff can show standing with specialized injury.

While Berg’s holding finds that a regular voter does not have standing, Presidential and vice presidential candidates such as plaintiffs Ambassador Alan Keyes and Gail Lightfoot have standing.

Judge Sloviter proceeds by arguing that both parties with actual and imminent injuries would have standing in this case. Nearly 40 plaintiffs in this case are members of the military. A number of them are either active military or in active reserves. For example plaintiff Lita Lott is in active drilling reserves. Within only a few days of notice she will be required to leave her family behind and deploy, this can happen any day. This satisfies the imminent injury prong for the purpose of standing.

In other words, she’s sticking to the discredited and ridiculous arguments that have been laughed out of courtrooms on both coasts. The more interesting question right now is how her confrontation with the U.S. Attorney is going to go.

Orly Taitz, who really seems to be staring down the end of her 15 minutes of fame, has filed a motion of reconsideration in Barnett et al v. Obama et al, her California “birther” lawsuit that was dismissed on Oct. 29. It’s the usual Taitzian ramble of made-up facts and cries for revenge — Taitz calls herself “the only attorney brave enough to bring most of eligibility legal actions, to bring actions from plaintiffs with real standing, the only one to get any hearings”–but there’s a classy new twist in her argument that the courts must allow soldiers to disobey the commander in chief.

Recent terrorist incident at Fort Hood has given this question paramount importance. This order has advocated blind obedience by the members of the military. If someone were to have common sense, brains and strength of character to challenge allegiance of Nidal Malik Hasan in court, after he made numerous anti-American and antimilitary statements, maybe 12 young boys wouldn’t be 6 feet under today, maybe 12 mothers and 12 fathers wouldn’t had their hearts ripped out of their chests and torn apart.

It’s stuff like this that’s pitted the less media-crazy “birthers” against Taitz for months now.

Conspiracy-theorist Website WorldNetDaily posts the inevitable “connection” between Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan and President Obama, and it possesses the same level of rigor and responsibility we’ve come to expect from the leading source of disinformation that the president wasn’t born an American. Under the headline “Shooter Advised Obama Transition,” Jerome Corsi — he of the Swift Boat liars — writes:

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged shooter in yesterday’s massacre at Fort Hood, played a homeland security advisory role in President Barack Obama’s transition into the White House, according to a key university policy institute document.

The Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University published a document May 19, entitled “Thinking Anew – Security Priorities for the Next Administration: Proceedings Report of the HSPI Presidential Transition Task Force, April 2008 – January 2009,” in which Hasan of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine is listed on page 29 of the document as a Task Force Event Participant.

Wrong! So thoroughly, thoroughly wrong!

That GWU document no more “advised” the Obama transition than did the flurry of think-tank documents and advisory strategies put out by endless interest groups. It had, and therefore Hasan had, absolutely no connection to the Obama administration. Here, for instance, is a story I wrote in November about one such strategy “advisory” paper prepared by the civil liberties community for the Obama transition about counterterrorism strategies. Really, this is as stupid as saying that a guy who writes a letter to The New York Times “advised” editor Bill Keller.

For the sane version of this story, please see Danger Room’s Noah Shachtman:

In May — a few weeks after his pro-bomber post — he participated in attended a meeting of the Homeland Security Policy Institute’s presidential transition task force.

Hasan attended a meeting of a private organization that gave the transition some unsolicited advice. To a group of conspiracy theorists, this is the “connection.” How long before Fox News picks up the story?

Back in February, 1st Lt. Scott Easterling wrote a widely distributed open letter questioning President Obama’s citizenship and announcing his intent to join one of Orly Taitz’s lawsuits.

“I implore all Service-members and citizens to contact their Senators and Representatives,” wrote Easterling, “and demand that they require Mr. Obama prove his eligibility. Our Constitution and our great nation must not be allowed to be disgraced.”

Taitz was rapidly propelled to her current status as a kind of gonzo celebrity. But what happened to Easterling? Greg Skilling filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the answer, and found that Easterling had been slapped on the wrist, then … promoted.

1LT Easterling received an administrative reprimand for violation of theUCMJ.

1LT Easterling is currently assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in the Support Operations Division.

After this incident and subsequent investigation and action, 1LT
Easterling was not involved in any other incidents. As a result, his supervisors recommended him for promotion on his officer evaluation report.

Other birther soldiers have been less lucky.

George Pataki), unleashed a disturbing, ill-informed rant about President Obama’s citizenship during an interview today with Don Imus.

It’s important to stop and note that Dietl, while over-the-top, is not a political nobody.

According to MSNBC, he ran security for the 1992 and 1996 Republican National Conventions, and 23 years ago he ran for Congress in New York. He lost that election, but he’s led a very successful career in security and become regular cable news guest. And in this interview, he bought into two of the stupidest pieces of “evidence” in the birtherverse — a 2004 Kenyan newspaper story that referred to then-candidate Obama as “Kenyan-born,” and a rumor that a Kenyan village was building a monument on Obama’s supposed birthplace.

“If this is not true, let’s end this!” Dietl yells, holding up printouts of the bogus stories. “That’s the paper from Kenya, we got to step up!” After Dietl accuses a skeptical Imus of “going aboard the socialist patrol,” his microphone is cut, and he keeps on screaming.

One reason that a ludicrous figure like Orly Taitz can still get booked for TV interviews — poll after poll shows a substantial number of Americans buying into birther conspiracies. Today it’s an MTSU poll in Tennessee, one of President Obama’s worst states in both the 2008 primary and general election. The survey found thirty-four percent of all Tennesseans believe the president was “probably or definitely” born outside the United States, while 30 percent believe he’s “probably or definitely” Muslim.

Among Republicans, the numbers are even worse.

Is this true? “Barack Obama was born in another country.”

Yes – 37 percent
No -47 percent
Unsure – 15 percent

How about: “Barack Obama is a Muslim.”

Yes – 48 percent
No – 38 percent
Unsure – 14 percent

The funny part of this? The poll gives Obama a narrowly negative overall approval rating of 46 percent, with 80 percent support from Democrats and independent voters approving of him 49-43. In a state that gave him 42 percent of the vote last year, that’s not that bad.

Going back over that Liza Mundy profile of Orly Taitz, I think she actually missed an important detail about Taitz’s arguments, as well as missing the only reason to report on her, beyond freakwatching. First, the argument Mundy missed.

She has developed a scenario whereby Obama’s American mother gave birth in Kenya, his father’s native country, then persuaded bureaucrats to falsify his records and ease him back into this country. She also conjectures that he may be a citizen of Indonesia, where Obama lived for a time after his mother remarried.

The thing is, Taitz has consistently argued that even if neither of those things were true, Obama would be ineligible for the presidency because his father was Kenyan, and that would have bestowed British citizenship on his son thanks to the 1948 Nationalities Act. This is, of course, a completely insane argument.

But that leads me to the reason why Taitz has any news value at all — she has convinced elected Republicans that the British disqualification of Obama is a real thing. I’ve spoken to one of them, State Rep. Cynthia Davis (R-Mo.), who has brought Taitz to meet other legislators in Missouri, and who told me at the How to Take Back America conference that the British theory made a lot of sense. I’ve spoken to Michael Schwartz, chief of staff to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), after Taitz presented her evidence to him; Schwartz was not convinced, but the fact that she had the conversation at all was surprising.

A little digging, or some time at a site like Politijab, would reveal the disturbing access that the deeply ridiculous Taitz has gotten to elected officials. Instead, the Post ran a puff piece with references to Taitz’s “charming but ferocious tenacity, part Meg Ryan, part Madame Defarge.” I don’t remember the paper running such pieces about former Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), whose career imploded — justifiably so — after she apparently endorsed 9/11 conspiracies in a radio interview.

Taitz is not an amusing cartoon character. She’s clogging up courts, accusing judges of treason, and getting face time with Republicans. Simply put, the Post botched this story.

It’s a day of mixed news for the Pied Piper of the “birther” movement. The bad news: Taitz’s case, Keyes v. Obama, got a hearing in Santa Ana, an event that had been built up on WorldNetDaily and other far-right sites as a possible turning point in the battle against the president. According to liveblogs from the scene, however, Judge David Carter (whom birthers thought to be an ally because he served in the Marine Corps) revealed himself as the latest puppet of the Obama administration.

Taitz said that the judge she saw today in court is not the same man who said he wanted to move this case along and resolve it on the merits. Taitz made no attempt to hide her feelings that “something has happened” between the Sept. 8 hearing and today’s hearing. Taitz gave a powerful and impassioned closing argument that electrified the the gallery who broke into applause and cheers on two occasions. The judge perhaps not wanting to be booed off the bench in his own courtroom opted for the safe approach and said that he would take the matter under submission.

When in doubt, accuse the judge of being pressured by the attorney general. That’s what Taitz is doing in Georgia, too. Read all of the posts there; the birthers seem to be convinced that yelling at the judge is key to getting him on their side.

The good news for Taitz? The Washington Post gave her a lengthy profile in the paper’s Style section, and it’s possibly the least critical thing ever written about this severely disturbed person who’s encouraging the military to rebel against the elected president of the United States.
