Obama Speaks, Again, on Iran’s Nuclear Concealment
This morning the president emphasized the years of concealment of the as-yet-unfinished nuclear enrichment facility at Qom as the most serious problem posed by the Iranian nuclear file. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad parried that he wasn’t in any specific violation of Iran’s international obligations. A day’s worth of cable chatter has already portrayed sanctions — which last [...]
Iran’s Nuclear Proposals
As the Obama administration assesses that Iran is near nuclear capability , Iran has released a series of proposals for negotiations on the nuclear question. It’s technically secret, but someone forgot to tell ProPublica’s Dafna Linzer.
In the document, titled “Cooperation for Peace, Justice and Progress,” Iran reiterated many of its previous ideas for talks while [...]
So the Crackdown is Working
As best I can piece together this morning, the Iranian regime’s crackdown is halting the momentum of the opposition. Andrew says he can find no sign of today’s planned rally. No idea about the general strike. The New York Times, however, reports:
… at least three Iranian newspapers reported that of 290 members of the Iranian [...]
Iran Election Prediction
If Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ends up winning re-election, not only will American conservatives suddenly rediscover the all-encompassing power of the Iranian presidency, but they’ll accuse liberals of being hypocrites for pointing out their hypocrisy, since liberals have been hoping against hope that Moussavi wins, and therefore they must have been writing that the Iranian [...]
Moussavi Declares Victory
It’s been going around on Twitter for the past five minutes, and here’s a Reuters report saying the same thing.
“I am the definite winner of this presidential election,” [Mir Hossein Moussavi] told a news conference in Tehran.
No statement yet from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Supreme Leader Khamenei.
Update: Ahmedinejad is declaring victory too.
Ahmadinejad Losing on Twitter
Can it really be that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad doesn’t have any supporters on Twitter using either the #iran or #iranelections hashtags? Challenger Mir-Hossein Moussavi’s supporters are absolutely shellacking him on Twitter. It’s like Daniel Pipes is his only defender.
Obama and Iran: Getting to Yes
The Iranians have so far greeted every Obama administration overture to them with tepid-to-hostile reactions. Without reading too much into it — Mahmoud Ahmedinejad does not make the foreign policy of Iran; that’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, last seen rebuking President Obama — this would appear to be a change in tone:
Is Dennis Ross Ambassador to Iran Under a Different Name?
Here’s an interesting story from The Washington Post about what key Obama administration officials and would-be officials make of potential openings to Iran, notwithstanding Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s demand for a U.S. “apology” for past crimes. The article quotes a recent paper by Dennis Ross, who hasn’t yet been officially announced as the State Department’s [...]
