The Republican Party of Sarasota County will host its 2011 “Statesman of the Year” dinner later this month, at which the party will honor Mississippi Gov. — and once-rumored presidential contender — Haley Barbour.

Barbour, who helped found the D.C.-based lobbying firm BGR Group, was rumored to be considering a presidential run as early as 2010. The Mississippi governor also made trips to Florida and South Carolina and told wealthy Republican donors to “keep their powder dry” till he decided whether he would run.

In the end, Barbour didn’t launch a presidential campaign — likely because his political career has been steeped in controversy in recent years.

In his home state, Barbour landed in hot water following comments he made praising the pro-segregation Citizens Council. He also told the Weekly Standard that he didn’t remember the Civil Rights Era as “being that bad,” a comment that created a strong backlash.

In February, Barbour again found himself ensnared in a racially charged controversy after he refused to denounce a proposed state license plate that would honor Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader. When pressed for comment by the NAACP, Barbour said, “I don’t go around denouncing people.”

The “Statesmen of the Year” dinner will be held on Nov. 27. Tickets to the event range from $150 (for an individual ticket) to $3,000 (to be a table sponsor).

Anti-abortion groups will launch a national campaign at 11 a.m. today by performing live ultrasounds on Capitol Hill for the public. The campaign is called “Voices from the Womb.”

According to a campaign press release:

“Voices from the Womb” marks the beginning of the end for Roe v. Wade as members of Congress will have the chance to clearly see the humanity of the child and work together to end the violence of abortion and establish human rights and justice for all.

After October 13, “Voices from the Womb” will begin a national tour performing live ultrasounds in schools, churches state capitals, legislative hearings and public events.

Members of the anti-abortion campaign invited all “535 members of Congress and the public” to the presentation.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration has warned women against undergoing unnecessary ultrasound procedures. Because the long-term effects of repeated ultrasound exposures on a fetus is not fully known, the FDA has warned that it is best to not have one unless it is medically necessary.

Ultrasounds have become a political tool used by the anti-abortion movement in the past couple of years. Anti-abortion advocates have pushed for states to require women seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound procedure, whether it is medically necessary or not, in a effort to dissuade them from having abortions. A law of this kind went into effect in Florida this year.

“Voices from the Womb” is being sponsored by is the Stanton Project, the Christian Defense Coalition and the National Pro-life Center.

The Christian Defense Coalition has held over-the-top anti-abortion demonstrations on Capitol Hill in the past. One of the group’s last events featured a display of “white sheets,” a symbol of the Ku Klux Klan, in front of House Speaker John Boehner’s office in an effort to highlight what they claim is Planned Parenthood racism.

It wasn’t that long ago that Kansas legislator Virgil Peck said undocumented immigrants should be shot from helicopters. That may be an extreme view, at least so publicly expressed by someone so prominent, but almost every day someone on talk radio says something nearly as offensive.

One group, Not In Our Town, says enough is enough. They’ve filmed a documentary about a town in New York, Patchogue, which saw anti-immigrant anger go beyond rhetoric, culminating in a random murder. After the murder, the town came together, essentially to say, “not in our town”.

The film will be shown on Denver KRMA September 21 at 10 pm. Numerous community organizations around the state have also organized screenings, generally to be followed by discussion.

See a teaser here:

The Not In Our Town movement began before Patchogue, back in the 1990s when a Jewish family in Billings, Montana had a brick thrown through their window, which had displayed a menorah. The town came together after that, with people of different faiths, or no faith, placing menorahs in their own windows as signs of tolerance and solidarity. Billings became the subject of the first Not In Our Town film in 1995.

“People in Billings came together to talk about their commonalities,” said Patrice O’Neill, executive producer and CEO, NIOT.

More recently, she said she started hearing stories about anti-immigrant hate crimes and what people are doing about it. “Most people are in denial about the hateful rhetoric regarding immigrants, and a surprising number of communities actually seem to support such anger,” she said.

When the young immigrant was killed in New York, though, it shocked the community into action and what happened next became the subject of the new film.

“We are trying to address the climate of hatred in so many communities, Rabbi Jack Moline, board member of the Interfaith Alliance, told The Colorado Independent. “The tensions between these groups have to be addressed,” he said. “Hate crimes take place in communities between individual people,” he said. “These crimes are not committed by national groups, but by people. The mayor of Patchogue understood that he had to put a face on people, not just identify them by their race or religion.

“Every hour in this country there is a hate crime committed that affects somebody–not because of what they have done, but because of who they are, because of how they came into this world,” Moline said.

Jessica Gonzales, vice president of policy and legal affairs at the National Hispanic Media Coalition, agreed with Moline that the path away from hate begins with seeing each person as an individual. “You have to put a face on people, everyone has to be treated with dignity as a person. I’m excited for this film to start local conversations.”

Grand Junction is one place that hopes this film can start a local conversation. It will be shown at the Mesa County Central Library, 530 Grand Avenue, at 6 pm Monday, Sept. 19.

“We are working to change the dialogue around immigrants to one of respect and dignity,” said Karen Sherman Perez, coordinator of Welcoming Colorado, a branch of Welcoming America.

“We are trying to make Grand Junction a more welcoming place. The tragedy in the film is something we hope to never see here,” she said. “People always think ‘this couldn’t happen here’ but you need for people to connect person to person and that is why we are doing this,” she said.

“These kinds of conversations are what make us safe,” said Paul Sheridan, with the district attorneys office in Charleston, WV.

Jim Hunt, who is on the city council in Charleston, noted that there will be a Ku Klux Klan rally in Charleston right before the film is screened this weekend.

Sheridan, echoing a theme from the film, said the majority of hate crimes are not committed by hate groups, but by random teenagers who have heard the hateful rhetoric and taken it to heart. “They absorb the hateful talk and then they act on it. When a hate crime occurs, you aren’t looking for a Klan member or a hate group or an extremist, you’re looking for a teenager or a neighbor.”

Gonzales pins some of the crimes against immigrants on the passage of anti-immigration laws. “People who in the past didn’t feel free to vocalize their hate, now feel free to do so,” she said.

The film will also be screened in Golden, at the Jefferson Unitarian Church, 14350 W 32nd Ave. at 7 pm Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Pam Benedict, chair of an immigration task force at the church, said the church will show the film more than once if the demand is high enough, and that the general public is welcome. There are expected to be showings in Fort Collins, Denver and Boulder as well.

Pretty much wherever you find efforts to tighten immigration laws in the United States, you find John Tanton–or more likely these days, one of the groups he founded.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform was in Arizona when that state wrote its famous senate bill to crack down on immigration. They were in the Colorado Capitol last November when the Republican Study Committee of Colorado hosted a forum on immigration reform.

At that time, Republicans in the Colorado Legislature told The Colorado Independent they planned to pursue Arizona-style legislation in Colorado, a position they backed down from over the next couple of months as it became clear that Arizona had paid a hefty price for its own legislation.

When FAIR came to Colorado, The Independent reported on
FAIR’s ties to Tanton and on Tanton’s ties to racist organizations as well as on his propensity for racially tinged statements.

Sunday, The New York Times published a major cover-story profile of Tanton, noting his liberal roots–as a supporter of Planned Parenthood and the Sierra Club–and chronicling his steady movement toward white nationalist sympathies. including his ties to the Ku Klux Klan, holocaust deniers and those who claim white people are genetically superior to other races.

Tanton was concerned all along as he established his network of anti-immigration organizations that the groups and its supporters could be perceived as racist if they weren’t careful. In the end, a FAIR executive told The Times, it was Tanton himself who brought such infamy to the cause.

From The Times:

“The fear was that one ugly person could tar the larger movement, and sadly, ironically, it turned out that person was John Tanton,” said Patrick Burns, who was then FAIR’s deputy director.

But if anything, Dr. Tanton grew more emboldened to challenge taboos. He increasingly made his case against immigration in racial terms.

“One of my prime concerns,” he wrote to a large donor, “is about the decline of folks who look like you and me.” He warned a friend that “for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority, and a clear one at that.”

Dr. Tanton acknowledged the shift from his earlier, colorblind arguments, but the “uncomfortable truth,” he wrote, was that those arguments had failed. With a million or more immigrants coming each year — perhaps a third illegally — he warned, “The end may be nearer than we think.”

I’ve spotlighted retired Lt. Col. Allen West as one of the GOP’s most credible African-American candidates for Congress this year–he lost a 2008 bid in his Florida district by 10 points, but is getting full support from the National Republican Congressional Committee this time. West’s response to the Harry Reid flap is the angriest one I’ve seen, a lengthy bill of complaints against Democrats as the party of “slavery, secession, segregation, and now socialism,” which “birthed” the Ku Klux Klan, and which keeps African-Americans in a kind of bondage.

“If President Obama had any courage he would demand Reid step down as Senate Majority Leader, and discontinue any support for his Senate reelection,” says West. “Notice I said ‘if.’ I am quite sure the Soros money which elevated Obama to the position of President has bought his servitude.”

Read the whole statement, and remember: West is one of the NRCC’s supported candidates, and a video of him talking about his beliefs has, under-the-radar, gotten well over a million YouTube views. His appeal to the conservative base is reminiscent of the appeal someone like Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) has to liberals — fiery rhetoric, with the promise of more if he gets to Congress. If West was in Congress today, there’s no doubt he’d be drawing media attention for comments like these.

Greetings,

The revelation of Senator Harry Reid’s comments referencing “negro talk” is just indicative of the true sentiment elitist liberals, and indeed the Democratic party, have toward black Americans. The history of the Democrat party is one of slavery, secession, segregation, and now socialism. It is this new aged socialism born from the Johnson Great Society programs that have castigated blacks as victims needing government dependency. One need only to look upon the city of Detroit to ascertain what liberal social welfare policies have produced for the inner city… the new plantation for black Americans.

The Ku Klux Klan was birthed by the Democrats as a terrorist wing to intimidate blacks, and whites, who sought to promote economic and education independence and social justice for blacks. What was once overt has just morphed and become covert, yet still exists.

One can only imagine the insanity and media outrage if Reid’s quote had come from a member of the Republican party. I look forward to hearing from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on Reid’s comments… or has liberal hush money paid for the silence of these proprietors of poverty and victimization theory. Actually, if President Obama had any courage he would demand Reid step down as Senate Majority Leader, and discontinue any support for his Senate reelection… notice I said “if”. I am quite sure the Soros money which elevated Obama to the position of President has bought his servitude.

Why am I running for US Congress as a Republican? Simple. I would rather stand proudly and be called “an Uncle Tom and a sellout” than lose my self-esteem and be considered an inferior by liberals. I understand the legacy of the GOP and the black community… not the revisionist history espoused by liberal educators. I am not, shall never be, and will not raise my daughters to be a part of the liberal 21st century plantation. I am not just some articulate, clean, well spoken negro. I am an American warrior, Congressional candidate, and shall never submit to the collective progressive ideal of inferiority.

Senator Harry Reid’s comments are disgusting, despicable, and unacceptable. They are representative of how intellectual elite liberals do indeed speak of black Americans in their closed private spaces. Next week I have been invited to NYC to address the Hudson Institute, a conservative organization, conference on “Reclaiming American Liberty”. That invite came to me because I took advantage of the opportunities this great Republic offered. I followed the guidance of my parents and set my standards above all others around me. I speak well and have impeccable communicative skills because my Father and Mother prioritized that quality.

I shiver to think what my future could have been if I listened to the insidious rhetoric of charlatans such as Harry Reid, and the ambassadors of affirmative action who reside in the Congressional Black Caucus.

Sure, the “stuck on stupid” blacks are going to address me in derogatory names, but I possess something which they lack; Honor, Integrity, and Character. To them I say, continue to be slaves to the liberals for your vote… and in a year you will be calling me Congressman West.

Steadfast and Loyal,
LTC(R) Allen B West

Gerald Walpin, the former Americorps Inspector General who alleges he was fired unfairly, might not help his case with this:

“I would never say President Obama doesn’t have the capacity to continue to serve because of his (statement) that there are 56 states,” Walpin said, adding that the same holds for Vice President Biden and his “many express confusions that have been highlighted by the media.” Obama mistakenly said once on the campaign trail that he had traveled to 57 states.

The “57 states” flub — thirteen months ago Obama apparently meant to say he’d been to 47 states, but said “57″ — is famous on the Fox News circuit and the conservative blogosphere, if pretty much forgotten everywhere else.

Now, a skeptic of the administration is not a bad guy to have investigating contracts. But Walpin had been attacked in 2008 as a “right-wing Republican” who said at a 2005 fundraiser for former Gov. Mitt Romney that Massachusetts was run by a “modern-day KKK” of the “Kennedy-Kerry Klan.” He gave one of his first interviews about this story to WorldNetDaily, the fringe site that’s hounding billboard companies that refuse to sell space to run ads about Barack Obama’s citizenship. None of this discredits Walpin, but it’s making him a less sympathetic figure at the very time that some Republicans, such as Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), are wondering if they can make a scandal out of this.
