Casey, McHugh to Brief Senate Armed Services Committee on Fort Hood in Secret

The briefing, according to a release from the committee, will be entirely closed to the public. Presumably Nidal Malik Hasan’s intercepted communications with al-Qaeda affiliates will be discussed. It all goes down, with testimony from Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey and Army Secretary John McHugh, on Monday, Nov. 16.

Gates, McHugh Statements on Ft. Hood Horror

The Secretary of Defense:
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic events today at Fort Hood. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen, the wounded, and all those touched by this incident. There is little we can say at this point to alleviate the pain or answer the many questions [...]

Democrat Grabs Lead in NY-23 Special Election

The newest poll from Siena Research Institute has Democratic candidate Bill Owens grabbing the lead in a three-way race to replace former Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.). Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava has faded slightly, due in large part to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman grabbing 27 percent of the self-identified Republican vote.

NY-23: GOP Candidate Leads in Three-Way Race

The new poll from the Siena Research Institute has Dede Scozzafava, a liberal Republican state assemblywoman, leading the race to replace former Rep. John McHugh (who became Secretary of the Army last month). Scozzafava leads with 35 percent support. Democrat Bill Owens, a first-time candidate, trails with 28 percent support. Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party [...]

John McHugh Is the Latest GTMO Detainee

The Senate Armed Services Committee may have approved Rep. John McHugh’s (R-N.Y.) bid to become Army secretary last week, but CQ reports that Kansas’ two Republican senators, Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback, are putting a hold on McHugh until the Obama administration clarifies whether it plans to move Guantanamo detainees to their state’s Leavenworth prison. [...]

Parting Is Such Sweet Blogging

The Senate Armed Services Committee voted yesterday to send the nomination of Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.) to become the next Army secretary to the full Senate, making his confirmation imminent. (Alas, he still hasn’t clarified his Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell position.) So Pete Geren, the current Army secretary, takes to the Army’s blog to say [...]

John McHugh, What About ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell?’

Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.) is before the Senate Armed Services Committee this morning for his confirmation hearing to become secretary of the Army. He began by saying his “first priority” is to alleviate the pressures on a “force fatigued by some eight years of uninterrupted combat.” Interestingly, he doesn’t include in his opening statement a [...]

‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal Preview? Gates Opened CIA to Gays

Kevin Drum notes — via Matt Yglesias — that there’s a really overwhelming margin for junking the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law that’s kept out gays out of the military. A recent Gallup poll found that 69 percent of all respondents supported a person’s right to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation, up [...]

Will Republicans Hold Rep. John McHugh’s Seat?

President Obama will nominate Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.) as the next secretary of the Army, which will open up another House seat in New York, three short months after Democrats held the seat in the 20th Congressional District vacated by now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). Can Republicans hold it? Possibly, maybe even probably, but it’s not [...]

Gates to Congress: Do the Patriotic Thing, Not the Parochial Thing

To flesh something out about how Defense Secretary Bob Gates wants the services to stay in line during the upcoming budget battle on the Hill, in response to a question asked by American University’s Gordon Adams during the conference call today, Gates said he saw two lines of criticism emanating from Congress. First, there’s concern [...]
