Jason Mattera, a 26-year-old conservative activist and video journalist, has been named editor-in-chief of Human Events, replacing the departed Jed Babbin.

Mattera, the author of a new book titled “Obama Zombies,” has risen to prominence by filming punchy, made-for-Fox News interviews with liberal activists and Democratic members of Congress — most recently, he confronted Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) in a stairwell and demanded answers about whether the health care bill would fund jungle gyms. Tommy Christopher of Mediaite ripped into Mattera; Mattera, in an interview with Newsbusters, responded.

Tommy Christopher’s a joke. Nobody reads him. It’s probably him and his two moms. That’s about it.

Mattera also won some cable TV infamy for a speech at CPAC which The New York Times criticized for “racial tones” and “racial stereotypes.” The young, Brooklyn-born activist was furious — what the paper described as a “Chris Rock dialect” was how he actually talked. And I can confirm this. Hearing Mattera call somebody “brother” is like hearing him use the words “the” or “but.” It was, however, an example of just how dedicated he is to roiling the left.

Human Events gives the title to the former vice president in an op-ed penned by former UN Ambassador-turned-omnipresent critic of the Obama administration John Bolton. And there is a strong case to be made that it’s on foreign policy and civil liberties issues that the Obama administration has been most disappointing to the left and most encouraging to neoconservatives. Bolton argues, cuttingly, that the Democratic offensive against Cheney — easily the most despised conservative figure among liberal activists — is an acknowledgment that he got his way.

Cheney knows that the personal attacks on him, as offensive as they are, in reality constitute stark evidence that Obama and his supporters are simply unable to match him in the substantive policy debate. An old lawyers’ cliché says: “If the law is against you, pound on the facts; if the facts are against you, pound on the law; if the law and the facts are against you, pound on the table.” Obama and his supporters are doing the political equivalent of continuous table-pounding, because that’s basically all they have to offer. Cheney’s unwillingness to be deterred by the media assaults on his character, his judgment and his performance in office are therefore his most impressive force multiplier with the general public. Outside-the-Beltway Americans see him for exactly what he is: a very experienced, very dedicated patriot, giving his fellow citizens his best analysis on how to keep them and their country safe.

Allen West, a retired lieutenant colonel who’s making his second run for Congress from a south Florida swing district next year, pens a column for Human Events that touches on almost every far-right base. West is angry that Rep. Ron Klein (D-Fla.), the incumbent congressman, isn’t making himself available for town halls, and that Democrats are attacking conservative protesters. “It seems they are resorting to their normal Saul Alinsky ‘Rules for Radicals’ tactics,” West muses. “Rule #5, Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”

It gets angrier from there:

- “the DNC is running insidious advertisements and the White House has launched its “Great American Snitch” program at flag@whitehouse.com.”

- “dare you speak of the anointed one and you are a racist.”

- “Left wing blogs attack Governor Sarah Palin and made allegations that her young Son Trig is not hers.”

- “No one is questioning the law license inactive status of First Lady Michele Obama. And what is up with twenty-two staffers for the First Lady Michele?”

- “The Bush twins were regularly part of media attacks, dare no one speak of the Obama daughters who attend wonderful — and very expensive — Sidwell Friends private school.”

- “As a 22 year US Army combat veteran I can tell you when I smell fear, and the left wing liberal socialists are stinking up the place.”

Now, the district that West is trying to take for the GOP is a classic swing seat; it voted only 52-48 for Obama in 2008, and West lost an underdog campaign to Rep. Klein by only 10 points. It’s saying something that West would eschew an under-the-radar moderate campaign and instead breath fire on a national conservative Website in order to gin up support from the party’s base. Was there any successful 2006 Democratic challenger who launched a campaign by asking why no one was investigating First Lady Laura Bush’s scandals?

The Norris endorsement comes just days after former Arkansas governor and Iowa Caucus winner Mike Huckabee formally endorsed Vander Plaats at a fundraiser in Spirit Lake.
