Democrats and the Great ‘Czar’ Panic
Manu Raju talks to Senate Democrats about the Glenn Beck-driven, almost entirely hysterical campaign against “czars.” The fuel: a letter written by Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) about “czars.” I’ve reprinted the letter below the jump, but the key bit is this:
I respectfully urge you to disclose as much information as you can about these policy [...]
Rep. John Shadegg Lists ‘Czars’ Who Were Confirmed by the Senate
At a press conference on Rep. Jack Kingston’s (R-Ga.) anti-”czar” legislation, Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) held up a chart of 34 “czars” in the administration.
“I don’t think you know who these people are,” said Shadegg, ribbing the media for not holding them “accountable.”
But several of the people in Shadegg’s chart were actually confirmed by the [...]
The ‘Ayes’ and ‘Nos’ on Sunstein
If you missed it, the roll call vote on Cass Sunstein’s nomination to run the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs is up here. All but six Republicans voted no, and all but five members of the Democratic caucus voted aye. The big surprise on that front: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), a self-professed socialist who [...]
Cass Sunstein Confirmed 57-40
Cass Sunstein, President Obama’s pick to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, was confirmed handily by the Senate just now by a vote of 57 ayes to 40 nays. Glenn Beck will no doubt rue this day for as long as he shall live.
Cass Sunstein Confirmation Vote Coming After 3:45 p.m.
According to the offices of the Senate majority leader and majority whip, Cass Sunstein will get a final confirmation vote sometime shortly after 3:45 p.m. Barring any unexpected delay, Sunstein will be confirmed before the start of Glenn Beck’s TV show.
Cloture Passes on Cass Sunstein, 63-35
On a 63-35 vote, the Senate has broken the filibuster against Cass Sunstein, President Obama’s nominee for Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. The Senate will hold an up-or-down vote on the nomination later this week. Republicans voting for cloture: Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. Judd [...]
Lieberman, Klobuchar Push for Cloture on Sunstein
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, introduced the cloture vote on Cass Sunstein’s nomination by addressing some of the conservative movement-driven attacks on him and rebutting them with letters from conservative supporters. “This is one of those nomination,” said Lieberman, “that I think has become unnecessarily controversial.” [...]
Cloture Vote on Sunstein at 4:45 P.M.
Sen. Dick Durbin’s (D-Ill.) office sends word that the Senate will vote on cloture on the nomination of Cass Sunstein after a debate this hour.
At 4:45pm, the Senate will proceed to vote in relation to the following:
- Final passage of the Travel Promotion Act (S. 1023, as amended)
- The motion to invoke cloture on the [...]
Blue Dog Dem Comes Out Against Cass Sunstein
Support from libertarians and the Wall Street Journal editorial board hasn’t saved Cass Sunstein from the wrath of Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.), a conservative Blue Dog from a district that gave Barack Obama only 35 percent of the vote in 2008. The Tulsa World’s Jim Myers reports on a teleconference town hall in which Boren [...]
Attacks on Sunstein Frustrate Conservative Fans
Unlike the now-ousted green jobs czar, Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein must be confirmed by the Senate.
