The Americans for Legal Immigration PAC just announced that it’s withdrawing its longstanding support for former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs, who the group previously called on to run for president, because he’s backed away from his stance against legalization of illegal immigrants.

“While Mr. Dobbs claims his positions have not changed, however, that is not the perception of many of our mutual supporters,” said William Gheen of ALIPAC, in a press release. “His recent comments on Telemundo and his national radio show supporting some kind of path to citizenship for illegal immigrants is inconsistent with positions of ALIPAC and the views of most American citizens.”

ALIPAC is a stalwart opponent of what it and Dobbs have long derisively called “amnesty” for illegal immigrants. The PAC cites a recent Pulse Opinion Research poll finding that “78% of likely voters were opposed to legalizing the status of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., with only 19% supporting it.”

No lawmakers are actually proposing legalizing all 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States, but some have proposed creating a path to legalization for those who have lived and worked in the United States for several years, have not broken any criminal laws and are willing to pay back taxes and a fine.

Dobbs recently fueled speculation that he may run for political office when he appeared on Telemundo and said he would support legalization for some undocumented immigrants. He also floated the possibility during an appearance on former Sen. Fred Thompson’s (R-Tenn.) radio show.

“Our internal polling shows that over 70% of our supporters are upset with Mr. Dobbs’s comments on Telemundo is support of legalizing illegal aliens. ALIPAC opposes any path to citizenship form of Amnesty for illegal aliens currently in the US,” said Gheen.

“Therefore we are dropping our support for Lou Dobbs and suspending the fan sites we have created.”

The immigration restrictionist group Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) said it’s flooding Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, and planning another round of Tea Parties, to motivate what they hope will be a huge backlash against any attempt to legalize any undocumented immigrants in the United States. The group is gearing up to fight comprehensive immigration reform legislation expected to be introduced by the end of this week by Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.),

“Make my day punk!” said William Gheen of ALIPAC in a press release on the group’s Website. “Gutierrez and his fellow traitors in Washington know they are running out of time on this Amnesty legislation and since 78% of Americans oppose what they are trying to do and many consider it Treason.”

The Tea Parties Against Amnesty, scheduled across the country on Nov. 14 are only a warm-up, said Gheen. He said he is preparing many more events for the spring, when the “Amnesty battle will be full swing.”

Here’s the anti-amnesty pitch, posted on www.AgainstAmnesty.com:

President Obama along with Republican and Democrat DC insiders are preparing a mass ‘Comprehensive’ Amnesty for illegal immigrants in America that will provide a path to citizenship and turn illegal aliens into voters even though a vast majority of Americans oppose this. This will only bring more ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION to America!

It is time for Americans of every race, religion, and political party to unite and make it OUR MISSION to stop amnesty, stop and reverse illegal immigration, and place America back in the hands of We The People.

It was just a matter of time, but right-wing bloggers, restrictionist immigration groups and now even some politicians are blaming illegal immigrants and the government’s failure to keep them out for the swine flu pandemic.

Michelle Malkin writes, “hey maybe we’ll finally get serious about borders now,” adding that she’s “blogged for years about the spread of contagious diseases from around the world into the U.S. as a result of uncontrolled immigration,” but “open-borders ideologues” would never listen. “Maybe the threat of their sons or daughters contracting a deadly virus spread from south of the border to their Manhattan prep schools will.”

William Gheen, meanwhile, head of the Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, on Monday blamed the Obama administration for putting American lives at risk due to its “failure to secure our borders.” In a press release issued Tuesday, he called on Congress to “demand that the southern border be closed to all non essential traffic and that military troops are deployed to stop the nightly flow of thousands of illegal immigrants into America.”

Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) has jumped on the train, too. Yesterday, he called on the U.S. government to close the U.S.-Mexico border until the threat is resolved:

The epicenter of this outbreak is still in Mexico and while we now have several confirmed cases in the United States, we must consider all options to help reduce the number of new cases entering our nation. I’m glad that the White House has issued a travel advisory and is conducting passive screening at the border, but I think we should consider stronger measures at the border. I am in favor of using all tools available to reduce the spread of Swine Flu.

Other restrictionist bloggers are picking up on the theme, citing “illegal immigration” as the source of the flu: “Are we all going to die in the name of political correctness?” asks iReport.

Meanwhile, the latest reports suggest, as I wrote earlier, that the disease didn’t spread from illegal immigrants crossing the border, but from mounds of uncontrolled porcine fecal matter at a Mexican subsidiary of a U.S.-based pork processor.

Although the mainstream media in the United States hasn’t picked up on it, at least one Mexican newspaper and some U.S. bloggers are reporting that swine flu may have originated from mounds of porcine fecal matter at the Mexican subsidiary of U.S.-based Smithfield Foods — the world’s largest pork packer and hog producer.

As Tom Philpott at Grist writes, Smithfield operates massive hog farms Perote, Mexico, in the state of Vera Cruz, where the outbreak originated. According to the company Website, the operations are part of a Smithfield subsidiary called Granjas Carroll, which raises some 950,000 hogs per year.

Grist refers back to the Website Biosurveillance, which has this fascinating piece of information in its timeline of the swine flu outbreak:

Veratect reported local health officials declared a health alert due to a respiratory disease outbreak in La Gloria, Perote Municipality, Veracruz State, Mexico. Sources characterized the event as a “strange” outbreak of acute respiratory infection, which led to bronchial pneumonia in some pediatric cases….officials indicated that 60% of the town’s population (approximately 1,800 cases) has been affected. [...]

Residents believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to “flu.” However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this outbreak.

Although a connection between the swine flu outbreak and Smithfield farms has yet to be proven, and the company says it’s found no symptoms of the disease among its flock, the Mexico City Daily La Jornada is reporting on the possible link.

Blogger Charles Lemos also pointed out this eye-opening/stomach-turning 2006 article from Rolling Stone on the vast amounts of disease-spreading pig fecal matter produced by the Smithfield subsidiary:

The 500,000 pigs at a single Smithfield subsidiary in Utah generate more fecal matter each year than the 1.5 million inhabitants of Manhattan. The best estimates put Smithfield’s total waste discharge at 26 million tons a year. That would fill four Yankee Stadiums. Even when divided among the many small pig production units that surround the company’s slaughterhouses, that is not a containable amount.

Smithfield estimates that its total sales will reach $11.4 billion this year. So prodigious is its fecal waste, however, that if the company treated its effluvia as big-city governments do — even if it came marginally close to that standard — it would lose money. So many of its contractors allow great volumes of waste to run out of their slope-floored barns and sit blithely in the open, untreated, where the elements break it down and gravity pulls it into groundwater and river systems. Although the company proclaims a culture of environmental responsibility, ostentatious pollution is a linchpin of Smithfield’s business model.

A lot of pig shit is one thing; a lot of highly toxic pig shit is another. The excrement of Smithfield hogs is hardly even pig shit: On a continuum of pollutants, it is probably closer to radioactive waste than to organic manure. The reason it is so toxic is Smithfield’s efficiency. The company produces 6 billion pounds of packaged pork each year. That’s a remarkable achievement, a prolificacy unimagined only two decades ago, and the only way to do it is to raise pigs in astonishing, unprecedented concentrations.

According to La Jornada, the Mexican health agency has acknowledged that the “clouds of flies” multiplying in the Smithfield subsidiary’s manure lagoons could be responsible for spreading the disease.
