Emotions ran high in a New York state courtroom packed with supporters of the Sean Bell family this morning. Judge Arthur Cooperman delivered a not-guilty verdict in the case of slain groomsman Sean Bell who was shot 50 times by undercover police officers on his wedding day. Today the largest U.S. bank, Citigroup Inc., announced a $5.1 billion loss and 9,000 layoffs. It’s tough news for a company whose chairman of the executive committee, former Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin, is often credited for crafting the financial boom of the 1990s. The Washington Independent’s finance reporter Mary Kane predicted problems for Citigroup on Monday, lumping the mega lender in with other "anemic" banks like Wahcovia Corp. that keep reaching for external funds to help prop themselves up. Headlines across the country today reported Citigroup’s losses, but at first glance the problem reads like an isolated issue, rather than part of the larger credit crisis.

At a public mass held at the Washington Nationals Stadium today, Pope Benedict warned the 46,000 attendees of the dangers of secularism and then asked for help in healing the wounds of the clergy child abuse scandal. Benedict made similar remarks speaking to American bishops and at the White House on Wednesday. The striking dichotomy between guidance and forgiveness appeared in headlines in all major media outlets today.
