Washington Independent has two types of paid contributors: Fellows and Senior Fellows.
Senior Fellows are full-time independent contractors for the Center for Independent Media. Fellows are half-time independent contractors.
The Senior Fellowships offer experienced journalists a unique opportunity to do the kind of passionate, unfettered reporting they have always dreamed of. The Fellowship offer younger reporter-bloggers the chance to develop their expertise, voice and reputation.
We currently have two Senior Fellowship openings and one Fellowship opening.
This position offers an extraordinary opportunity to do creative, groundbreaking reporting on the 2008 presidential election which defies conventional wisdom of "horse race journalism by exposing the reality of the struggle for power and votes. You will write a couple of stories a week; contribute reported blog posts; listen to voters (and non-voters) as well as consultants and pollsters; explain the historical and cultural factors shaping the race, and consistently penetrate the veneer of the struggle for power.
You will do passionate accountability reporting with attitude, exposing incompetent government officials and dysfunctional federal agencies, with the goal of exposing the people and the practices that hinder good government. You will write a couple of stories a week; contribute reported blog posts; develop whistleblower sources; mine data bases and obscure government reports for abuses of power; and explain how the failure of government harms the common good.
