American Crossroads, the right wing outside spending organization affiliated with Karl Rove, isn’t just spending a lot of money — it’s doing so in increasingly few races, thereby making its impact all the more potent.
The group is up again with a new adin Colorado targeting Sen. Michael Bennet (D), and it’s also launched another attackon Robin Carnahan (D), who’s running for Senator in Missouri. The ads rehash previous attacks and come off as somewhat tired for those who are following the races closely – they again quote Bennet out of context to imply that he thinks the stimulus did nothing to help the economy, and they keep trying to link Carnahan to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democratic votes in Congress despite the fact that she’s never taken one — but one shouldn’t underestimate the power of repetition.
Nowhere is American Crossroads, and its sister organization Crossroads GPS, staking out more ground, however, than in Nevada:
“„Last month in Nevada, Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads spent nearly $800,000 on ads, making it the second most active third-party group during that period, trailing a pro-Reid group called Patriot Majority, which spent more than $910,000 in TV and radio ads in August.
“„In total, Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads — which was the brainchild of Rove and former Bush White House official Ed Gillespie — have spent $1.7 million in Nevada on ads slamming Reid, most notably on the economic stimulus. The group has earmarked an additional $10 million for Nevada and seven other states to bolster GOP voter turnout on Election Day.
Rove claims the huge influx of spending into Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-N.V) race — which has most likely been the single most important factor in keeping Republican tea party candidate Sharron Angle afloat — is nothing personal. It’s just a state where Republicans think the Democrats are especially vulnerable. But his new book, “Courage and Consequence,” doesn’t shy away from labelingReid an “unreliable,” “untrustworthy,” and “rash” Democratic leader, so there’s clearly no love lost between the two men.
