Oil Industry Opposed to Limits on Environmental Waivers
Monday, August 16, 2010 at 5:20 pm
The oil industry is pushing back against new restrictions on environmental waivers for offshore oil and natural gas projects.
In a statement, American Petroleum Institute Upstream Director Erik Milito said Interior Department’s decision to limit the use of s0-called “categorical exclusions,” a type of environmental waiver, could slow down the process for permitting offshore projects.
According to the statement:
We’re concerned the change could add significantly to the department’s workload, stretching the timeline for approval of important energy development projects with no clear return in environmental protection. Environmental review of offshore operations under existing rules is extensive, and decisions on categorical exclusions, which are intended to avoid repetitive analysis, require review.
We’re in favor of targeted changes to regulations that enhance safety and environmental protection, provided the changes allow for the efficient moving forward of energy development and job creation.

I am so happy that the oil and gas companies are worried about the workload in our protection agency's. I just realized that the oil and gas guys are just big old teddy bears needing hugs from us,and the concern they have for the people writing these changes, worried that they would get very tired from reading and thinking and stuff like that. Of course they promise to take responsibility for anything they think is their fault. It would make them sad to have to pay when they destroy our water tables, our oceans and of course all those pesky living things on our planet. Since these companies know what needs to be done, why get our very overloaded government involved just to regulate safety and environmental protection for it's citizens? I think all our politicians need a nap…Oh wait, they have been asleep for years. maybe it's time to wake them up.
