Michael Bromwich, who is heading up offshore drilling activities in the Interior Department, said yesterday that the now-defunct Minerals Management Service should not have been so dependent on the oil and natural gas industry in developing standards.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Bromwich, speaking at a meeting of engineers on the oil spill, said:

I think there is the perception and the reality that we have been heavily reliant on the domestic oil and gas industry in setting standards. We’re going to be exploring borrowing from alternative models.
