Romanoff is the Next Democratic Insurgent to Race Ahead

Looks like selling his house paid off. Colorado Democratic Senate candidate and former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff has surged into a dead heat with appointed Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) with just over a week until the state’s August 10 primary, according to the latest polling numbers.

Romanoff, like Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) who took on incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) in May, is mounting a liberal challenge to the Democratic establishment’s pick — and he’s getting a boost of support from the majority of younger, Hispanic, and “liberal” voters in the state, a Denver Post and 9News survey showed. Also like Sestak, he’s leapt back from a huge deficit — 17 points in Romanoff’s case — and now has the momentum going into the final full week of campaigning.

One of the few things working against Romanoff at this moment is Colorado’s mail-in system of voting, used in most counties, through which about 40 percent of expected voters are estimated to have already cast ballots. Romanoff has to hope that enough supporters are energized by his recent surge to show up at the polls next week in order to swing the election his way.

Here in Colorado, we always knew Romanoff was doing better than the poll numbers said. Why would anyone choose the compromised, fumbling Bennet when there was a charismatic, articulate alternative. The Washington pundit crowd should have come out to see for themselves. Now President Obama and Rahm Emanual will be stuck backing yet another loser.

The Democratic establishment is all behind the incumbent but that's not working. People are seeing that Bennet is part of the problem (still a better choice than a Republican) for receiving $11M for corporate raiding, accepting over $1M in PAC money, and generally taking “safe” votes. The fact that Romanoff sold his house resonates more with the average Joe as someone who has guts. People are realizing that money corrupts…and that Andrew Romanoff is trying to fundamentally change the system.

I attended a recent Boulder County Fair (Longmont, CO) parade watched by thousands. Not a single Bennet sign but perhaps 50 chanting, sign-carrying Romanoff marchers. That's telling in a heavily Democratic county. Down at the State Capitol at a Bennet news conference last Saturday there were possibly 3-to-1 more Romanoff supporters than Bennet. Among my own neighbors there is passion (and yard signs) when they talk about Romanoff but I don't hear it (or see signs) among the incumbent Senator proponents…they seem to be just following Obama's recommendation robotically.

Romanoff's speech at the CO Democratic Assembly was electrifying. He has the ability to capture the hopes of the unemployed and disenfranchised. Independents and Republicans applaud his stance on refusing PAC money. I suggest folks go to YouTube and check out some of his speeches.
