Anti-Defamation League Opposes Islamic Center Near WTC Site
Friday, July 30, 2010 at 12:34 pm
Via Andrew Sullivan, the Anti-Defamation League has released a statement backing Sarah Palin and other conservative figures who have come out against the proposed Islamic Center near Ground Zero in Manhattan:
Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right.
The Muslim community center in New York is just one of a number of planned mosques and Islamic centers around the country about which a slew of conservatives have drummed up controversy by arguing — with no shortage of inflammatory language – against their existence or placement. The Anti-Defamation League, which describes itself as “the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry,” is making a puzzling move by aligning themselves, however obliquely, with some of the hate speech of those who have come out against the proposed Islamic Center.

Just because you can does not mean you should. Imagine how you would feel if a family member of yours was murdered. Now imagine the brother of the murderer wanted to move in next to you, go to the funeral, and try to explain hid siblings actions. How do you think the victims would react? They have every right to tell him to go away. Even if the brother did not commit the crime, it's in EXTREEMLY bad and disrespectful taste to do this.

So let me see if I understand this country. White people can do what they want (like say killing 9 people on a boat carrying humanitarian aid), but brown people (Arabs and Mexicans) cannot. That's sounds par for the course considering half the white people fought the other half of the white people to make it illegal to own a black person. I'm sure a synagogue or a church would be welcome around ground zero. However, the freedom to practice religion only applies to one practiced by white people apparently. This kind of intolerance is exactly why we are hated by so many as a country.

You do realize, by your comparison, you are directly linking the 9-11 terrorists with the people who merely wish to build a mosque, right?
By that reasoning, I'd be careful and watch out for Iraqis coming to shoot you in the night for what your “brothers” did to their families…
/silly comparisons

Yeah.. Here I thought the ADL was about protection of religious viewpoints against oppression. Guess the true colors show when it's somebody else under the boot.
Comment posted July 30, 2010 @ 8:22 pm
No I did not make such a link, you just did. I’m talking about emotional pain of loss of family not being respected by others. Here you go with your “peaceful religion” threatening violence in response to anyone who disagrees. You just made a direct link to disagreeing, and terrorism. Typical. “Behead all who say we are violent”!

Bravo ADL… As a Jew, and a victim of 9/11 I fully oppose the building of a Muslim mosque on the grounds that my brother was killed by muslim 'martyrs'. The bloody history of Islam requires them to build mosques on the sites of muslim conquest, and as a result of 9/11 it seems they consider NYC to be a site which requires a monument to their bloody attack. I stand firm against the building of this atrocity on the site my brothers blood was spilled. I join all other families of victims in opposing the building of any muslim monument on this site. As a right-wing Jew I am usually disappointed with ADL's leftist leanings but this time they hit a home-run… I will be writing them an email supporting their decision… Good Shabbos to every Jew!!!

Your comment displays your ignorance. Israel had every right to board a ship which was violating a Naval Blockade. In the process of boarding the Marvi Mamri the terrorists on board attacked the IDF troops who had rappelled onto the deck with pipes, knives, and other cold weapons. In the process of trying to secure the ship 9 of these terrorist were killed {thank G-d}. I would rather the terrorist die than good IDF troops sent to defend the nation of Israel. There is no question that IHH was and is a terrorist organization with ties to the highest level of Turkeys government. Watching the video of the events of that boarding brings tears to my eyes because the troops were expecting peace activists and not terrorists hell-bent on killing Jews. The videos show the 'peace activists' claiming they were going to martyr themselves {meaning they wanted to die trying to kill Jews}. They also sang songs about killing Jews… I do not regret what Israel did, and the world will know that Israel was in the right and Turkey was in the wrong for trying to violate Israels sovereignty. Fools like ajm8127 will continue to tow the line of the islamic terrorists but the wise will review what really happened and realize that the Jewish state has an absolute right to self defense, and a Naval blockade intended to reduce the # of missiles being fired from Gaza is a legal method of doing this.

This is another ignorant statement. ADL is concerned about every minority including gays and muslims. Both of these groups I dont believe need any protection from a group which is supposed to prevent antisemitism. It is for this reason I am involved with JDL {Jewish Defense League} which takes a much more pro-active approach to jew-haters. Hate crimes against Jews in America is much greater than what they call Islamophobia {similar to homophobia I guess}.. Hate crimes against Jews are greated than hate crimes against Muslims and Gays combined.

Are you serious? From the Guardian:
The results revealed that a 60-year-old man, Ibrahim Bilgen, was shot four times in the temple, chest, hip and back. A 19-year-old, named as Fulkan Dogan, who also has US citizenship, was shot five times from less that 45cm, in the face, in the back of the head, twice in the lhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/04/gaza-flotilla-activists-autopsy-resultseg and once in the back. Two other men were shot four times, and five of the victims were shot either in the back of the head or in the back, said Yalcin Buyuk, vice-chairman of the council of forensic medicine.

Those people killed were mostly shot, execution style. In the back, in the back of the head, in the temple. This was not self defense, this was murder choreographed by a sovereign nation. But, as long as they are Israel, they can do whatever they want.

Their position is profoundly regrettable. The families' distress over the mosque is, unhappily, based on their inability or unwillingness to distinguish one Muslim from another, or one version of Islam from another, or — basically — a worshipper from a terrorist. We cannot let our sympathy for their loss blind us to that. Let's not commit a crime against unoffending Muslims in the name of easing the grief of a set of non-Muslims. The Trade Center attacks largely took place because somebody thought all Americans were alike.

The fact that there are more hate crimes here against Jews than Muslims is no reason for the ADL to commit a hate crime itself against Muslims, and that's what this anti-mosque agitation basically is: an attempt to thwart a right to free worship that all Americans have in common. They've allied themselves with Islamophobes here. That's a tragic fact. Their reputation will suffer by it.

Emotional pain, insofar as it is based on sectarian malice, cannot and must not be respected. If your father was killed by a black man, does that mean a black family may not move in next door? Grief isn't a license to oppress.

As a Muslim, I advise you to read about Islam. It is not a bloody religion and it always calls for peace. Even our greeting as Muslims is “Peace be to you”. In every religion, there is a good and a “bad” person. So if there is a good jew, you can also find people who murder and kill “Not to mention Sharon and the massacres “. Also, if there is OSama Bin Laden , as a person who kills and terrorize, there are people who say that this is not Islam. This is prejudice and terrorism….
so please don't send quick judgments about religions unless you know so well about them

i am muslim. i am sorry for all the families and victims of 9/11. i agree that there are different standards for the “white” versus the “brown” people, but i am also against the center being built. while i like the idea of a center that could educate people of the peacefulness, what will be the point if it causes others pain. i am concerned it will make us seem an insensitive group. i would expect jews and christians to respect my feelings if the roles were reversed. even though it is ridiculous to blame all muslims for 9/11, they see it as a slap in the face to have an islamic center close to where their families were killed “in the name of Allah” so i can understand their point. if a christian person killed my family in the name of jesus christ i would not be thrilled about a church going next to the memorial. so i think it would be best to respect their wishes in order to spare them pain [however irrational--where is there room for rationality when grieving the violent loss of a loved one?]
