What Legislation Is Coming for the 99ers?

In the unemployed netroots this week, rumors abounded that Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) might be planning legislation for the exhaustees or the 99ers — those who have run out of the maximum number of state and federal unemployment benefits.

Arthur Delaney at the Huffington Post notes that Schumer said as much on local television yesterday:

“There are a number of people who have maxed out, they’ve been looking and looking for work and haven’t found it, and there is a separate act that would extend the unemployment benefits to them,” Schumer told New York’s WENY-TV. “Extending this was really important. There are some people who go beyond the 99 weeks and we’re going to try to do that next.”

Schumer has indicated he might try to do something for the 99ers for months now. But repeated calls to his office this week haven’t yielded any answers. Still, a Senate aide notes that the situation has not really changed in Congress and warns 99ers not to get their hopes up. The aide says that though numerous Democrats would like to create a fifth tier of unemployment benefits, it would be impossible to pass through the Senate; several Democrats won’t vote for a fifth tier, and there might not be a single Republican cross-over to break a filibuster.

That said, progressives are hoping to craft something that expands job-subsidy or job-training programs for 99ers, and will look for offsets to make the bill deficit-neutral. The bill would likely come after the November midterms, but could come before.

I wouldn't get my hopes up about being reelected this november. You are not giving a hand out. It's our working dollars that pay your way. The public giveth and the public taketh back. Why don't the government let the 99ers barrow against their unemployment and when they get back to work and pay in on their unemployment, pay the money back them selves. The government backs loans all the time. Just back this to the 99ers and all will be better.

What really bothers me is that there are people out their that are calling us lazy. Don't these people realize that there are so many people in the millions that are out of work. There aren't enough openings for everyone and for every job that you apply to you have about 5 to 10 people applying to the same job. We want to work! But if there are still not enough jobs and we can't find even the smallest opportunities at the minumum wage rate, we need another extension. Otherwise we will lose everything we have. We've paid into this with our own tax money. People just dont get it. They dont understand how bad things are. Dont call us lazy!! We didn't create this mess in the first place! We lost our jobs of no fault of our own, and we have people saying, are you kidding me, you couldn't find work for two years?! Well, things have gotten worse since then, so how the hell would it be easier to find work? You explain this to me!

I just called Schumer's office and the employee who answered his phone said that Schumer is not writing any legislation for 99ers – Deb Stabenow is. Schumer will just sign on as a co-sponsor.

Schumer's employee doesn't know what will be in the legislation, but that it will probably have a time-frame; perhaps 3 months. Schumer's employee thinks Deb Stabenow will introduce it after she and Schumer get back from vacation in September.

After Shumer's employee told me that Deb Stabenow, not Schumer, is writing legislation for 99ers, I called Deb Stabenow's office.

The child who answered the phone at Stabenow's office told me that she doesn't know anything about it, except that 'there is talk' of '99ers'.

I asked the child to clarify whether or not Deb Stabenow is in the process of writing legislation to extend UI benefits to unemployed people.

The child repeatedly told me that she knows nothing about it.

I asked to talk with Deb, she said Deb is at a meeting. I asked “What time can I call and reach Deb?” She asked for my name, and state. When she learned I wasn't calling from Michigan, she rapidly said “I have to go now and answer another call coming in”.

I highly suggest Deb Stabenow advise her child employees who take calls for her to GIVE ANSWERS INSTEAD OF EVADING.

Hi, Pat,

I just left a message on Stabenow's voice mail, asking her for the answer to ONE simple question:

“Are you, or are you not working for additional weeks of UI benefits to “99ers?”.

I will return a call to her office tomorrow and ask for her answer.

I dont have til November. do you think one of them senators will come live with me, and wake up early every morning to answer my collection calls that continue constantly until late at night? or eat mac and cheese from a box every night? I know I'm living the high life. but come on senators I would love to have you over for a day. any takers? thought not.

I am a 99er also, i love that term it makes us all sound like lazy SOBs however i have sent 100's of resumes. only to land 1 interview. I used the trade act to go back to school and was thankful for that, however now my training is done i get no paid time to look for work. Howerver i started looking early knowing that might be the case. I am very upset that we can bail out the banking system, wall street the car companys but when it comes to bailing out the people that need it most they go flat line on us. I guarentee you one thing i will be keeping score on who wants to help and who is playing the political game and will vote aginst everyone of them and rally to get them thrown out of office. That way they can pitch a tent like the rest of us.

Republicans will not vote for the tier 5. Blame the Republicans…as I am a 99er, a single mom, have gone back to college, have looked for a job consistently for almost 2 years. I am so tired of hearing that we are just being lazy. I don't know where they get there stats that each job is 1 out 5. Every time I have gone to an interview, they have had 1500+ for 1 position. This is Washington State and Oregon, I have applied for. I am skilled, was layed off after 13 years at the same job. I am trying my hardest and am getting no where, and can't believe that our government is turning their backs on those who need help the most. Yes go ahead and fund the war, and the banks, etc etc…hey maybe you should throw in a raise for yourselves and take a vacation for a month, while we try and figure out how the hell to pay our mortgages and the rest of our bills…no worries government….thanks for the help…thanks for watching us all sink!

Yes this is so sad. I am also a 99er and have been looking for almost two years. Yes I decided to go back to nursing school after I was laid off. I have been in school for almost two years as well…I am a single mother with three kids and there is NOT a job that will actually work around my hectic school schedule as a nursing student…rarity. I was recently booted from the program and with it my student aid to pay my bills……..I have been looking relentlessly to find something…heck anything and nothing. I am facing turn off notices on every bill, no income, which means no house, no car (and we are lazy? Really? Who wants to live under those conditions) WE NEED HELP

We are not lazy. Don't claim that. We are strong 99ers. I have been working since I was 13 years old. I am a single mother of 2. School is starting in less than 3 weeks and I have no money. I don't even know if I'm going to have a place to live next week. Rent is due and I have $0.00 to my name. Lazy we're not. It's easy to call someone lazy when you don't want to give them money. But Congress can spend money on a war that's as old as one of my children. Maybe we should all go to the White House and stay there with the President until we get our lives together. Just maybe they will see we need help. We can't wait another day. We need help now. If we don't have any money and we loose our homes, apartements then what good is it going to do to pass a bill for the 99ers when we're out on the street. It's easy for Congress to sit down and discuss the 99ers over a steak dinner with shrimp cocktails while we don't have food. It's easy for Congress to take nice soothing baths with whirlpool action when I can't afford soap, toothpaste, etc. Yeah lets go to live with the members of Congress. GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER …..WHITEHOUSE…THE 99ERS. I don't know about you 99ers but me and my children need a place to stay. The way they got RESPECT IN THE OLD DAYS WAS TO BOYCOTT. Don't forget Elections are coming in November. If the people we vote for don't help us why vote for them at all. Take your chances on someone new. Why get slapped in the face twice? I've heard of turn the other cheek but my mom always say don't be a fool. Does Congress think we are stupid because we can't find a job? GOD will punish the unrighteous who neglect to help those in need. Try to hang in there 99ers. I am on the phone 24/5 making calls. I suggest you call the White House, the Senators and your Congressman. You voted these people in now make your vote count. May God bless every 99er and may God have mercy on Congress soul. Patsmith1, I am sorry to add fuel to the fire bro, but it was also the greedy men who made caused the Great Depression. My friend is a 99er and he can't even get food stamps, because he is homeless. It took a lot of civility, over two weeks, for his siblings to talk to his father to show that he lives in their house just to get the food stamps! I have said it from former sites and I know there's another person who is willing to show support to the unemployed and 99ers. I am also willing to make some streamers, banners and shirts if there would be a rally somewhere. Congress may not see a million man march, but over 4 Million Unemployed March!

I really can't stomach this situation guys. I am a Forensic Anthropologist and seeing these real stories scares me. Eventually an unemployed would land on my lab table and then more and more cases. These are preventable and the Government that's “For the people” has faded long ago. They are now “For the Business” and I won't be surprised, because it seems like they are also “For Sale” now as well. Yes in my line of career we are doing case curve scenarios and this will break the number of gang, hate, and assault cases at least five times fold. This is a mass raping of workers and tax payers in general. I don't want to witness this, but if I turn my head the other way I am no better than those heartless individuals in the House and the Senate. I am willing to stand with all of you. All the unemployed, whether they are in their tiers or 99ers. Unemployed is unemployed. This tragedy strucked you guys which means it can happen to anyone even me.

Yes this going to become national tragedy. The unemployment numbers are complete utter non-sense. If you count those that have fallen off unemployment and those that did not qualify in the first place (1099 workers or workers that didn't qualify quarterly) the numbers would be around 30-40%. These are the numbers that they don't want Wall Street to know since it would cause widespread panic and sell-off. That is the true numbers but they hide them like the plague. The other skewed number is that I keep hearing the politicians saying that there is only 1 job for every 5 applicants. What a joke! I'm sure all of you know that is complete non-sense also. I recently finally got a call back from a potential employer that I had found online. He told me he had run the ad that morning at 8:00 am and by 11:30 am he had received 213 resumes. He stated that because of that he picked me out of the first 20 for an interview. That is the true numbers. I have 3 more checks left on my fourth tier. After that I don't know what I will do. I know if I'm still around in November I will vote out as many crooked heartless politicians as I can. I am not holding my breath for tier 5 for I know that it will not pass. Just get ready!
What happens when 20+ million unemployed people and tens of millions who receive some form of government assistance each month suddenly receive no money? How safe will America be? How angry will people become? Can you imagine long lines of people standing outside Walmart begging for food? Can you imagine being robbed at gun point for groceries as you exit a food store? Can you imagine gangs holding “gated communities” hostage within their gates until their financial demands are met? Can you image hospitals and doctors offices closed because there is no insurance and people cannot pay actual costs? When the government tells a huge number of people they will no longer receive government assistance, what choices will they have for survival? Consider Greece again (even though there has been a temporary respite for Greece by the European Union, the drama is not over – keep an eye on it).

Congress is so quick to pass out welfare checks and SSI checks for junkies and welfare moms that have their kids classified as ADHD to keep the checks going. But what about the people like me that have worked all of their life (I worked full time and went to college) I have never been without a job, now I am a 99er abd was told “I don't know what to tell ya lady”. What am I to do know, I will loose everything that I have worked for, 3 years ago my credit was good enough that I bought a new car and my son on the same day, now with paying my bills late and a kid in college (out of state) I am afraid to even check my credit score. Now what??? It's bad enough for me but now what about my sons education, no financial aide because I had to cash in my pension and 401ks. So much for the people that are raped by taxes to support the dead beats.

Chris, I thank you for your compassion and living in reality; yes, it could happen to you, many trash talkers choose to forget this. There are too many with jobs, shooting their mouths off calling the unemployed; “looters and welfare cheats.” We all need to remember a little saying; “There but for the Grace of God, go I.” The scythe of life can easily swing your way cutting you off at the knees, in the blink of an eye. It doesn't matter how carefully you saved, how well you lived within your means, or how wisely you built your retirement portfolio. The right seems to think it's alright to sacrifice the unemployed, for the sake of not adding to the deficit…. DESTITUTION IS NOT PATRIOTIC!

When we think of millions dying a financial death because our Congress has turned their backs on us, they have comitted GENOCIDE. We are backed against a corner, and have done all we can to get jobs. It is a complete disgrace what is going on in this country.
The 99ers were all hard working Americans who had a job, but through no fault of their own lost it.
Now it seems that the 99ers have been pushed aside and are not even being considered for employment. What is going on ?????
And worst of all, congress is turning their backs on them. It just amazes me how they can do this. They seem to have no issue helping everyone else, including the rich who do not need help, but not the hard working middle class which is the backbone of this country. The 99ers need help and the congress better start caring…

I just mean we are as bad as congress and talk, talk, talk instead of doing something, “real”, like organizing and marching on Washington to show them and the media this is real and not going away.

Perhaps a same day march in every city, those in DC on Congress, those in state capitol cities on that statehouse, and those in other places march on the local city hall. All on the same day.

WE HAVE TO UNITE, color plays no part in this matter. Remember if we dont stand for something we will fall for anything, and that is whats going on we have been falling for anything. One more thing remember how america got started, we the people stop falling and stood up, and we got our independance!!!

It will be to late when I loose my truck and go to jail for not paying child support and when my phone gets cut off how will any of the 285 employers I have put in applications with ever get in contact with me to give the opportunity to get a job. I guess the Alabama Correctional Department can give me 3 meals a day and a warm place to sleep for aslong as it takes for me to get my child support caught up, or maybe jeff sessions will contact the Governor and ask him to pardon me, so I can go sleep under a bridge while i try to find a job.
