Senate DISCLOSE Act Cloture Vote Update
Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 10:49 am
It’s all but official now that Democrats won’t reach 60 votes on today’s cloture vote on the DISCLOSE Act. Fox News reported that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) will be absent attending a family member’s funeral and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) reiterated her opposition to the bill late yesterday. Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) has yet to signal her position, though she has maintained that the Senate should be focusing on the economy at this time.
That’s not to say Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) won’t try again, however. Democrats feel the political momentum is on their side and may very well keep raising the issue between now and midterm elections in order to press their advantage.
UPDATE: Fox News initially reported that Sen. Lieberman was attending a friend’s funeral. They have issued a correction that states it was actually a family member’s funeral. This blog post has been updated to reflect that change.

Unfortunate! Still this allows us time to tweak the measure. Open Data ideas may be the best solution: http://opensource.com/government/10/7/patching-…

I would say that the DISCLOSE Act and the economy are very closely intertwined.

True transparency would be a good thing, but that is not what the DISCLOSE bill is about, it just protects the establishment and puts a burden on the small organizations that are promoting genuine change.

Fire Liberman and Reid. They are the EMPLOYEES of the voters. We the VOTERS are the EMPLOYER. Time to FIRE and HIRE since it's an ELECTION year.

[...] Today, the Senate will vote on the DISCLOSE Act, a campaign finance reform bill that would require detailed reports on corporate funding of political speech. But it will be filibustered, and the Democrats will not be able to break that filibuster, because Sen. Joe Lieberman has to go to a funeral. [...]
