For Growing Ranks of 99ers, No Help Coming

President Obama signs the unemployment benefits extension bill on Thursday. (epa/ZUMApress.com)

Late Thursday afternoon, President Obama signed into law a bill granting workers out of a job for more than 26 weeks additional unemployment insurance payments, paid for by the federal government. The benefits had been in place since November 2009, but had lapsed for seven weeks — an unprecedented hiatus, given the 9.5 percent unemployment rate. The bill, held up in the Senate for more than two months by Republicans concerned about the deficit, makes benefits retroactive to June 2 and forward to Nov. 30. In states with higher than 8 percent unemployment, workers will continue to receive up to 99 weeks of benefits.

[Economy1] Around the country, the 99ers — those who have exhausted the maximum number of weeks of federal and state unemployment benefits — rejoiced.

“I’m thrilled to death — this is helping two million people,” LaDona King, a 50-year-old from San Diego, said shortly after passage. “That’s very important. That’s not a small thing, by any means. Of course it is overdue — this initially passed in the House on March 10.”

King — a blogger and radio host who under the name Paladinette doggedly advocates for the interests of the unemployed, and 99ers in particular — hopes that help is coming for her next. Indeed, though she makes some money writing about the concerns of the unemployed, King is a 99er herself. (She notes that the $200 a month or so she gets for her writing disqualifies her from food stamps, leaving her to utilize food banks when she needs to.)

She lost her job as a compliance specialist at a Southern California subprime lender a few years ago. That kicked off a string of bad luck: She nearly died when a drunk driver hit her, and was unable to look for work. Her father passed, and she cared for him in his final months. She ended up so depressed as to be suicidal, uninsured and unable to access mental health services. The third and fourth tiers of extended benefits — passed last November — were lifesaving.

“I am still so upbeat, and so grateful,” she said cheerily on the phone. “It’s great when people help people. What I’m really concerned about is the families giving their children up to the state because they can’t take care of them. It’s the people who aren’t healthy. It is the lack of mental health services.”

Now, King advocates for 99ers, pressing members of Congress to extend benefits beyond 99 weeks and to create additional job-training and public works programs to get them back to work. She believes that though Congress has not helped the 99ers yet, the effort has proven successful. “Two months ago, nobody knew who the 99ers were,” she says. “Everybody thought it was some city’s AAA baseball team.”

And she puts the odds at better than 50-50 that Congress will pass something, anything, to help the swelling ranks. “A number of members have told me that there are people working on legislation for the 99ers, that they want to start something,” King says. “I call 25 to 30 a people a day on this on Washington. Thank God for unlimited long distance!”

But even the most active members of Congress on the unemployment issue say there will be no bill to help 99ers by adding a fifth tier of benefits — the most direct way to keep families and individuals out of poverty. “What we’ve seen in this fight is the difficulty of just expanding the program that we have,” says Ed Shelleby, a spokesman for Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), the head of the Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support of the Ways and Means Committee.

The Ways and Means Committee originates most bills concerning unemployment, Social Security, Medicare and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or welfare benefits. Thus far, McDermott is the only member of Congress to have held hearings addressing the plight of the 99ers specifically, and Shelleby says that the congressman “recognize[s] the need to help long-term unemployed folks legislatively” and believes that after unemployment insurance ends “we can’t let millions of people fall off a cliff.”

Still, he notes, “We have to face reality.” The most probable route forward would be expanding existing programs. An additional tier of unemployment benefits is out — something Democratic Senate staffers confirm. But senators including Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) have said they are working on some provisions to aid the long-term unemployed. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said he supports expanding benefits or creating programs for 99ers. The problem will be finding the money to offset the cost of the programs, and convincing spending-phobic Republicans — who increasingly argue that benefits should be cut to encourage people to go back to work — to vote for them.

The House is not looking at a fifth tier of benefits, instead reviewing public works programs and other ways to subsidize job creation. Shelleby said the expansion of the TANF Emergency Contingency Fund might be one route forward. “That was put in place after the recession hit to help states, basically to aid them in subsidizing jobs,” he said. “It has hugely bipartisan support.” But the fund is only $5 billion — a pittance even compared with the $34 billion benefits extension just passed, itself a pittance of the $150 billion jobs bill Democrats hoped to pass. Quintupling it, if even possible, might have only marginal effects on aid for the 99ers.

The Senate inaction comes as the government reassesses the severity of the long-term unemployment crisis. Previously, the economists estimated the number of 99ers to be around 1 million. (In June, the Labor Department said that 4.3 million Americans have been unemployed for more than one year.) But the number is hard to tally. There is no way to track exactly what happens to individuals when they stop collecting benefits — whether they make it back to work, or stop looking for a job, or continue the job search. And with the recession lagging on, some Labor Department economists believe the number might be as high as two or three million — a population the size of Dallas, and bigger than the U.S. military.

And no matter how big that population is now, economists fear it is set to grow. Ninety-nine weeks ago, the recession had been ongoing for about eight months. But employment is a lagging indicator. It takes some time for businesses to notice the downturn in sales, and to make the choice to start reducing their workforces. That started happening in 2008 — when the pace of layoffs climbed precipitously. In the first eight months of 2008, employers laid off 1.2 million workers. In the final four months, they laid off 2.4 million.

More layoffs two years ago translates into more 99ers now. And with job growth lagging far below levels needed to reduce the unemployment rate, the jobs situation continues to look parlous.

Still, King remains upbeat, and maintains hope that Congress will have to address the plight of 99ers at some point.

“There’s a lot of people suffering. I have to believe they’ll try their best to do something,” she said. “Because there are millions of us waiting to vote in the fall, as well.”

I don't think they're ignoring us. They know that lots of us 99ers are in a terrible spot. Problem is, lots of people in congress feel as if unemployment compensation is a handout. But it's not. It's emergency insurance. That's why it takes several weeks before anything gets passed becuae of all the nay sayers in congress that don't want people to be compensated for being out of work. You see, I just think lots of Americans including memebers in congress don't understand how bad the job market really is. It is a disaster and I'm sick and tired of people saying anybody can get a job anywhere if they want. No! It's not like it was 15 years ago when their were millions of jobs around. Even the small minimum wage jobs are hard to get because they're so many people out of work applying to the same job and there's not enough jobs to get everyone back to work. So nevertheless, many will be left out in the cold. Understand primarily, things are far more worse than you think!

Not only are there no jobs out there, there is no state or federal help either. I am partially disabled and can't even apply for disability because I don't have a current doctor. because I have no insurance, and nobody will help. Even if jobs were out there, I need to be selective on what I apply for, due to physical limitations. However, during my 99 weeks, I applied for anything and everything. Still no job and no income.
These people making the decisions need to talk to “us” on a personal level, hear what's REALLY going on and not go by the stats they read. We are people hurting, not stats on paper.

I am praying and hoping that I find a job. I look every day for hours on line, in the paper and ask people everywhere I go. The govenrment hopefully will help us. I have never been unemployed until this last two years. I would love to be back at work if only I could find a job.

TANF or WELFARE only helps people with children. The HUD programs are at full capacity and it is a very long sit on the waiting list…the unemployed, who lost their jobs through NO FAULT of their own and especially the 99ers have been thrown under the bus and rendered invisible.
And what is even sadder, is the realization that it is almost impossible for us to protest as we all have zero funds to get any where.
ZERO HOPE
ZERO transparency as the banks and Scam street now set the rules!
ZERO JOBS
ZERO JOBS creation!

I believe we need more people llike Ms. King and Ms. Lowrey to bring attention to our plight in the national media. I don't want to believe that members of congress are willfully turning a blind eye to our suffering. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope not. I still believe in America and it's leaders. I still believe that we are “one nation under God”. Call me a dreamer. I hope that I'm not the only one………

Congratulations for all of you who now have their benefits extended. But now it’s time to stand up and be counted. Remember how you felt when your benefits were cut off? Now imagine how all of us millions of 99ers feel right now because our ELECTED officials did not pass the Tier 5 unemployment extension. Guess what folks. It’s only a few weeks away for you who will also become another 99er! Only a fraction of you will get a job by then. Are you going to wait until you reach that point before you take action? Guess what, it will be to late by then. All unemployed need to demand a Tier 5 extension now. Tell your elected senators and congressman to implement this action now. After all, We elect these politicians to carry out what we wish our Government to do. The job market is not expected to become plentiful at all in 2010 or even 2011. So all Unemployed Americans, 99ers as well need to flood the white house with the demand for any and all extensions it takes to keep American citizens afloat until jobs are plentiful again. Demand the President to issue an Executive Order to pass a Tier 5 or even a Tier 6 and 7 and 8 if that’s what it takes to keep the American People alive and be able to keep their homes and feed their families. How are we going to pay for this the politicians ask? Here are a few suggestions. Have all the companies that our tax dollars paid to bail out give back 1% of what they received. Stop the war. Better yet, since we are already over there, take control of the Oil Fields and let the profits of the Oil Fields pay for the war so our tax dollars can pay to support all the unemployed US citizens! This is what Bush said would happen right from the start of the war! Take back all the money we have given to other countries as well as call in all the loans we have given to other countries. Interest free if that’s what it takes to get our American Money Back! That alone would reduce our Deficit substantially! Cut in half every politician’s money for travel expense, security coverage expense, campaign expense and Income and put it into a fund for the unemployed. Have all the bottle companies that have a surplus of income for bottles and cans not returned plus the interest they are making on that money sitting in an account. This bottle return policy was to help recycle and clean the planet. Not increase revenue for the bottle companies. Increase the taxes for the wealthy in this country that have received so many liberties for so long. I’m sure many other Americans can find and figure out ways how to come up with the money to supplement unemployment. Let’s have an accountant go through the White and Capital Hill books and see if our own Government is managing money just like the IRS would expect us to manage money? This country has been in a deficit since it started and that will never change. But for our elected officials to not do what it takes to keep Americans afloat is just what the President said. “Criminal Politics”. All of us who are unemployed right now, and even the employed as it won’t be long before you are unemployed, should make a note to remind themselves of just how our elected officials have acted right now. All of the unemployed, and employed since you could easily become unemployed as the economy gets worse, should be overwhelming the White House and Capital Hill daily with letters, phone calls and emails.

The only thing that will help 99ers is cold, hard CASH. Not job creation because that is certainly NOT a guarantee for those of us who are considered “too old” or don't have enough formal education (because we never needed it!). We need money and we need it now! There are so many people living on the edge……it's scary and hard to believe that the BEST country in the world could allow its best citizens to suffer like this. I have never been less proud to be an american.

I'm a proud 99er – former middle-class, honest, fair-play, college educated, hard working and 20 year computer expert American. We've all been snookered by our leaders. They falsely believe we are all lazy, greedy and incompetent. The system has failed and doesn't work. Why else have we been undercounted and ignored? Heads up… If you are a parent dealing with new found poverty. There is the risk of losing your loved ones as you seek “assistance” and go under scrutiny of the system because of set rules which govern impoverished individuals. Remember, you are now dealing with workers not accustomed to deal with former middle-class “clients”. Watch out for the jealously in human nature. You’re not dealing with a waiter/waitress who is paid to serve you. You will be required to confirm to the new “powerless” reality of poverty. Be very careful not to falsely think the “system” should actually help you as you navigate the unpractical and unfair maze… or you may end up with even more problems as you fight to keep your family together. It’s not fair, moral or even American, but I’m living through this reality.

The 99ers have been considered the parasites feeding off of road kill. Not only by those still employed through their inner fear they could become one of us—-but the current unemployed who will certainly become one of us.
I ask of you skeptics, when someone calls or visits YOUR place of employment and asks if you are accepting applications for employment…exactly WHAT is your response? The answer tells the truth.
And if truth be told, the answer is no.
Those being helped through this 4213 bill, will be falling off of those tiers, to become 99ers…millions before elections.
Yet the politicians are trying to BUY your votes, by extending them JUST THROUGH NOvember. Elections are????????????
THEN not only the 99ers, but the unemployed in whole, will be SOL.
Unemployment in today's economy, should extend until the unemployment figures are under 6.5%.
This would not only extend a life line to the unemployed, but enable them to pay their bills, to keep those still employed, employed. If they are continuously denied benefits, YOUR job WILL be affected. Even if you work for your relatives.
Gulf residents=BP PAY THEM NOW! It has been a month.
Unemployed with tiers=PAY THEM NOW! Stop being heartless, they have not seen help for 2 months.
99ers=go to hell……no help for SEVERAL MONTHS!!!!
The 99ers will be waiting with sharp pitch forks, for the rest of you.
We helped you….yet you said F@#$% You, to us.
We will hang our WELCOME sign.

99 weeks?!?! Almost 2 years of unemployment benefits. I'm sorry – that's not a benefit – not insurance – its a handout – its welfare. There are jobs out there – maybe not as much as you could make by collecting unemployment. But they are there – even if you need to take 2 or more to keep your house, pay for your car or child care insurance.
How is this helping business – which is trying to create and sustain these jobs? Take for example a construction company I know – laid off 35 workers at the beginning of this year to keep going. Officer and owner is taking no salary. They are getting back to making money and signing new clients and they have hired back twenty workers. But now – the increased cost of unemployment payments is most certainly going to be passed along to the company – making an already tenuous situation even more so. So, possibly by the end of the year, all the workers are going to be unemployed. A business fails – his vendor and subcontractors lose a substantial amount of business causing pressure to sustain their businesses. More unemployed workers on the street – less jobs available due to businesses failing or downsizing. And the cycle repeats.
No one wants to look at the overall picture – they just sit in their corner and beg for Tier 6 – Tier 7. The country can't afford this – the economy can't sustain this.
People will retort with claims that business owners are taking huge salaries and bonuses. This isn't the case. I've seen many business owners, like the one above, live off of savings and discontinue salary as well as go work in the field to keep their business going.
99 weeks – go get a job! Businesses are doing their best to survive. Now its up to the unemployed to do their part. Instead of spending your time writing blogs or calling Congress, work two jobs to support your family! This is becoming a nation of people expecting handouts – a friend warned about this when Obama took office. I didn't agree. I have to admit – he is right! I work hard for my money – my home – my car. I expect, if you are going to get the benefit of my hard work in the form of unemployment benefits – you do the same! Two years is enough time to find someone to give you a paycheck – maybe not your ideal job – maybe not your career – but a paycheck!

Many states froze HUD years ago. You can fill out the paper work, but you'll sit on a list for years. In NYC, even emergency housing requires that you live in a shelter for around 48hours. Upon entering a shelter and/or group housing, you'll be treated like a slave and/or ex-con and be assigned rules/work arrangements which must be meet… or you're out. I heard a woman complain about a shelter saying while attending college she couldn't study at night because all lights must go out at 10pm. Although she looked for work, attended manditory “life-coaching” classes and took college evening classes she wasn't given any slack because she had to be “in” by a certain time. The 3rd Great Depression has arrived… Next up, Civil War. Then, WW III.

Four of us are 60 + years old and one is a 36 year old who has worked a grand total of ONE YEAR IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE! I feel sorry for folks who need employment and have families to support, but really, a much larger percentage than we would like to admit is coasting on the free ride. That is the unfortunate result of ALL insurance – namely, it always increases the incidence of that which it insures. This includes welfare, fire insurance, and, not to forget, MORTGAGE DEFAULT INSURANce. Right now Frannie and Freddie are drowning in mortgage losses because the banks are offloading more crud loans onto the US taxpayer. We do need to rally together to get Congress to pay any attention to us. Come to 99ersupport.proboards.com and provide your input. There will hopefully be job finding assistance available there too so that we can get back into the workforce and have our voices heard again. Right now Congress sees us as a significant few.

Last year I took out a 20k loan to return to school and reskill – This year 10k. 20 years ago, I worked FT in the day and went to school FT at night on now paid off loans. At that time, America was told hi-tech was the future… but, nobody mentioned outsourcing the intelligent jobs. I've sent out (or responded to personal request) 400-500 job resumes via my three email accounts. Unlike many, I've had probably 50-60 telephone interviews and about 10 face-2-face over the last three years in several states. On some occassions, I've diven up and down the coast as well as paid my own hotel bills without reimbursement. Even when I've only “offered” to drive into a town for an interview, the “nervous” party strongly suggest that I stay put. The jobs aren't there… Both companies and recruiters are housing data on people via ghost job postings on Monster, Careerbuilder, etc,. The same job are recycle and reposted every 3-6 months… eveyone knows it. It's a fraud, but nobody talks about it. If there are jobs are, no company is hiring Americans and/or they aren't offering to relo people to the job area. You have no idea what's it's like to turn down investigating a job because you can't afford to move because you've lost your job, house, investments, savings and house hold goods while being a single parent and not getting any financial support. Before this happened, I was debt free. I then decided to buy a 35k car for the 1st time in my life. Within one month, I was laid off. I've built a proto-type solution for healthcare, but the banks aren't offering loans. So, I can't hire the 12 people I need to launch my business. As the 99ers fall, America will fall because we are America.

Where are the jobs they speak of. I would LOVE nothing more then to support my child and NOT live with my parents. I lost my apartment, car and this month my phone will be shut off. YES, YES, YES!!! That's the answer.. tax the hell out of the rich. Why haven't we thought of this before?
Of course taxes must go up to fund all these $$trillions spent. unfortunately, unless we define 'rich' as people earning over $100k, it will fall horribly short of the money needed. And most discretionary consumption is made by these folks so we could stumble into a second recession-hole when that happens. It's a mess folks, of that we can all agree. Maybe it's time to for those still employed to stay out of debt, cut spending, and build up a nice fat emergency fund. It's what our parents used to do.. and it's called SAVING for a rainy day and maybe we will finally learn to behave more prudently and live within our means in the good times so the bad times won't be so bad.

The business you are referring to is a small business. I aplaud your friend who owns it for being able to stay in business. I applaud him for hiring back some of his employees, but he has yet to hire them all back. The job I had has not been able to hire anyone back. To top it off the UE rate in my area is 12.6 percent. That means that there are about 30,000 people who are unemployed. The largest newspaper in the area only has 20-40 ads for employment. That means about 1,000 people for every ad listed. So that is 1/10th of 1 percent chance (.001%).

AMEN- AMEN – AMEN!

What people don't realize is – if businesses fail – there will be no money for 99ers', 45er's, or whatever the # of weeks is the flavor of the month. It will be 26 weeks – because the pot will no longer be able to sustain extension of benefits.

When are people going to be responsible for their actions? We bailed people out during the mortgage crisis – when they had no equity in the houses they purchased that were WAY above their means.

We bailed them out when they couldn't pay for COBRA insurance. So now that cost is funneled back to employers.

Now we are giving 99 weeks of unemployment because “I can make more on unemployment than working a job” – “there are no jobs in my town and I don't want to relocate unless you pay for that too.”

This sounds harsh – but its survival of the fittest! If you want to survive, you will find a way to get money – working two – three – four – jobs. You'll cut back on expenses – downsize your home – sell your car and take the bus.

If you don't, you'll depend on the gov't for handouts, food stamps, health insurance. And then – when the government runs out of money – too bad.

This country was made great by people who took care of themselves – made their own way. Where are those people?

I'm with you PRUDENCEPENNYWISE. Start squirreling away your money!

So how hard is the blogging radio host writer working to look for a job to support herself, if she is writing and blogging and on the radio so much? And calling 25 people per day for her political cause? And why is it again, that people who work should support her? We have lost our way and we should be ashamed of what we have become.

I hear the same thing and I live in PA. People are like 'go work at Wal-Mart or Target. I can't even get in there! I've been looking for work for the past 2 years. I lost of job of 21 years in 08. People just don't realize how tough it is to find work. I never thought I'd have problems. I've been an administrative assistant my whole life. I'm very versed on computers and office administration. Does that matter? NO. Only my age matters. I'm 61 and have lost so much. I'm selling clothing and jewelry to try to make ends meet. People are interested in hiring me because of my age. And now, being a 99er, I lost my lifeline. I've never really been scared before, but I am now. People shouldn't voice an opinion unless they've been in our position! It is very disheartening to me that I can't find a job. Be very thankful if you are working and have a job. Someday, maybe you'll lose your job and realize you are no better than us! The government sends billions of dollars in aide to other countries and it only took them 3 days to send billions to Haiti and Greece. Look how the banks were bailed out. What are we, chopped liver????? Something has to be done and it has to be done soon before people starting losing their lives, as well as everything else.

Obviously, you have not done the math, and you know nothing about our history.

Nothing but the republican BS that you regurgitate here for us.

Not too long ago the rich WERE taxed at well over 90% for the highest bracket. Budgets were balanced; crime and violence were at a minimum, people left their keys in their unlocked cars at night; homelessness was non-existant among those with families and children.

Then starting with Ronald Reagan, the republicans began cutting taxes on the most wealthy in our society to as little as 28%. The theory was called “trickle down” and it was a farce…the greed of the wealthy proved to be all that was gained from all that.

Come November , the tables will turn and we, the people, will regain the the power to rebuild this nation again…just like before when the greedy bastards created the previous Great Depression.

In the meantime, these unemployment benefits will help tide the hard working Americans, presently out of work – no fault of their own, over until the clean up in Washington can be completed.

Your theory that taxing the rich will cause them to quit their spending or leave the country, we've also heard is just not valid, that's been proved before also. They will just keep manufacturing bogus reasons to convince the “dumb” to vote more tax cuts again.

The republicans cannot win enough votes to send one single idiot to Washington without the help of whatever middle class folks they can dupe with flag waiving, racism, religious causes such as abortion vs right to life, gun ownership, and hate mongering in general.

We've all saved our money before…in banks and 401K's and lost much of it to all the greedy thieves receiving tax breaks for so long!

November….

This so call Republican Party does not care about the little people, these Klan’s are only here for one reason and that is their own political benefits (including the Fox News). This is not what a true Republican Party is all about; they are imposters posing as a political party. These Klan’s will reap what riches they can and let the rest of the country go to hell. These imposters need to move on and realize that the 50s and 60s are over. A new Sherriff is in town and I have faith that this administration will lead us to the right path.
Ask any Republican State Senator what jobs has he created or what did he accomplished with the stimulus money and he will reply NOTHING. This is simply the DO NOTHING PARTY and you should not let this country go down this coming November.

YOU AND YOUR IDIOT FRIEND HAVE NO CLUE! First, people were not bailed out who had bad mortgages – the banks who got the bailout did not re-write mortgages so that people could keep their homes, then they abandoned the homes to the counties who got the joy of bulldozing the homes because they could not cover the upkeep. Of the millions who would have qualified for re-writes under the Obama program, the banks only re-wrote about 100,000 mortgages nationwide!

As for finding a job – exactly how are people suppose to move to take a job as you suggest? My husband and I moved over 1300 miles because we were told there was a job, only to find out that the job was actually non-existent. We were out several thousand dollars at a time when all we had was my disability income and his unemployment. Now we are stuck in an area with no other work, and no money to move!

As for being able to find jobs – when the unemployment rate is over 8% there are no jobs, you two clowns! NONE! Programs that should have been put in place to create jobs have been cut out or so gutted by GOP politics that no one is being given an opportunity to go to work.

Basic lesson in economics for the FOX brainwashed: without work for people, no taxes can be paid, so government programs cannot be funded. Without stimulus programs that create government jobs, people have no money to spend to get products. Without those sales, people who own businesses cannot put people back to work (assuming that the businesses are even still in business after losing their credit lines for operations). This is basic economics – no jobs = no money = no sales or taxes = depression! And this formula has been a constant of economics for centuries! The lesson was lost on the GOP and apparently is still lost on them! And FOX News has told idiots like you that this is not so. Well, get a clue! Saving money is a luxury at this time because most of us are using every dime we have just to pay for food, medicine, and housing. We do not have luxuries like health insurance, entertainment, vacations, and in many cases, we do not even have housing! Instead we get to watch our retirement funds go out the door, our children go hungry, our spouses get sicker, and all so jackasses like you can treat us like dirt!

It is my fervent hope that this economy can improve, but the experts, and anyone with common sense, knows that this will not happen soon. In fact, it may be nearly a decade before it happens. So thanks to the GOP, and if anyone as stupid as those who are currently espousing the FOX News and GOP deficit line returns control of this nation to those who caused this, then they deserve to be the first ones fired the first Wednesday in November so they can enjoy what will follow with the rest of us!

I think if you asked your four friend 60+ why they have not bothered to look for work, you will find that they probably did, and just did not tell a busy body like you about it because they were ashamed at being turned away because of their age. As for the 36 year old – if he only worked one year in his life, then he does not need, nor may he ever have needed, to work and is riding the system (of your friends he may be the only one who is a lazy fraud). You are quick to condemn everyone because of the limited experience you claim your friends had. At 58, I can tell you for a fact that those over 50 are having a hard time getting in the door, and for those over 55, it is impossible. Your friends over 60 should be able to work, but thanks to businesses failing almost as fast as leaves in the fall, many businesses that would have hired them no longer exist. As for your comments about the insurance – insurance is not an entitlement, it is protection against loss. Unemployment insurance did not create unemployment anymore than mortgage default insurance created mortgage defaults – poor business practices and bad government policy created both messes. If you are incapable of understanding that simple fact, then you understand nothing, and regardless of your age, you have no capacity to either understand the problems of your 60+ friends or the homeless!

I know that this extension is going to end and there will be no job for me. I am 59 and expendable. There is no welfare or medical services for a grown single women with no young children. I worked my whole life supporting my son without welfare or food stamps no child support etc. Now that I need the services my taxes paid for I am told sucks for you. Why can't they have a program for people in their 50's to start cottage industries, my credit is so bad now that SBA or any loan is out of the question. I know that I could start a small business for as little as $5000.00 that would give me years of income. I would much prefer getting a $5000. start up then additional unemployment. Why can't I apply for my social security early as far as the labor force goes I am retired. Releasing our social security early, letting us get medicare then we could use the start up funds program to create a cottage business and become viable tax paying citizens again. It is not only the jobs they took away from us it was opportunity.

I am tired of worrying if some idiot in the Senate is going to extend benefits, I don't want benefits I want to earn a living, have my self respect back. I have the ability to start a business that would help me and my community. Let the Pres. create a new stimulus package giving us(50 yrs and older) the opportunity to create new businesses, and a new financial base for the 99er's. It can be a loan, interest rates are low enough that this could work. But because of the big banks wanting to punish the middle class because we caught them in their scams all our credit is ruined. I want my government to give me a hand up, not a hand out. I am nobody's fool or pawn and if the Republican party thinks we won't vote their butts out, they are as stupid regarding their own future as they have been with ours…I just hope the new tax rules go into effect, because I hate the idea of them retiring and not having to pay taxes on the wealth they created by taking ours.

WE ARE ORGANIZING PROTESTS! WE NEED YOUR HELP

Everyone on this and other forums has complained “We need to hit the streets with signs!”

I kept saying, “Yes, but how? We need to reach thousands of people in order to do this and no one has a mailing list of thousands!”

I want people who are willing to show up in major cities across the nation in front of NBC with WE NEED A TIER 5 TO SURVIVE signs or whatever, chanting and demanding to be heard!

We also desperately need HELP in organizing this and carrying it out.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to achieve this in just a few days.

Yet… we MUST. WE MUST MAKE OUR COMPLAINTS AND NEEDS KNOWN IN THE MAJOR NEWS MEDIA by the middle of next week at the lastest in order to show the Senate we are a formidable group and show the public we need help! Bring your kids! Show them Democracy In Action! (and show the media we need help with supporting kids!)

WE NEED THE FOLLOWING:

1) People committed to attend these rallies next week in front of your local NBC affiliate

2) People to HELP us! WE cannot do this alone. We need organization and help finding all addresses and phone numbers for all radio and tv stations in your area and especially the address of NBC News in your area. If you are willing to actually CALL those places when the time is right, that's what we REALLY need!

3) We need people to promote this protest – again, once we set a day and time and places, as soon as this weekend…. To start posting on Craigslist, in forums, in comment areas of news articles, on your FACEBOOK page, on Twitter, EVERYWHERE so that people can attend.

At this point we are using our web site forum for information and a forum at Unemployed-Friends – ours because we were forced into it, and U-F because it's the biggest around. I hope G won't mind my posting this here.. I do not want to take people away from here, in fact I want people here to continue to use this forum for helping figure all this stuff out. But we are using the 2 sites mentioned to do the bulk of the organizing and dissemination of information.

PLEASE MAKE A COMMITMENT TO BE AT YOUR LOCAL NBC STATION next week, sometime in the a.m. Monday – Thur, not sure yet.

PLEASE HELP US IN ANY WAY YOU CAN: promoting it all over the net but also in non-internet methods, anyway you can think of. Right now my head is so full of just trying to get more people involved via the net, I can't think about anything non-net.

Keep updated via the links on the frong page of our site (in my sig) and stay tuned. IF we can get support from enough people we CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN AND HELP GET OUR TIER 5! I believe we can do it. But we're going to need YOU to HELP!

Sincerely,

PDSNickels

I'm the wife of a 99er wondering what is going to happen to us. There is no reason why a Tier 5 can't be add until November. Like everyone is saying if we could help another country out in 3 days help the truly struggling out HERE in 2!!!
Trying to find a job in this economy is is one of the hardest things my husband has had to face. He has been working since he was 14yrs old he has paid more into his unemployment fund then what he have received, not to mention what I have paid into it and NEVER collected. I feel he IS entitled to that money especially under the circumstances we are ALL facing. Please add a Tier 5 BEFORE SUMMER RECESS. Maybe adding a special incentive in that bill to employers' who hire a 99er could possibly also be helpful to us. We are truly struggling with no help in site. Maybe when we are all homeless and out on the street and OUR country starts to look like a 3rd world country something will be done in less then 3 days why wait till it gets that far. PLEASE DO SOMETHING NOW! THE HARD WORKING PEOPLE HERE NEED YOU AND NOW! MY KIDS NEED YOU NOW!!!! PLEASE HELP

I am so tired of being referred to as lazy and someone looking for a handout. I have gone to the local unemployment office every week for four months. I have not had one interview. I am a 99er and I am somebody too. I have lost my car. I am about to lose my home. I cannot afford to even pay my electric bill this month. Does Congress care? Evidently not. I have been working since I was 18 and I am now 40. Please create jobs immediately or give me some assistance before I literally lose my mind. Do any of you know how hard it is to look at your children when they are having to wear clothes that are too little because they have out grown them and you cannot afford to buy anymore? Have any of you ever seen your children in need of shoes so bad that the soles are so thin that they might as well be barefoot? Please help the 99ers. We are some of the same people who counted when you wanted to be elected into office. We are asking you to remember that detail because elections will be coming up again soon.

Hey folk's, I was laid off in September 2007, because my job was outsourced to India, I collected unemployment for 5 weeks found another job, worked it for 3 months to get laid off again due to lack of product being sold. I collected unemployment again for 4 weeks & then I got another job. I was laid off again after 2 months because of lack of sales. Collected unemployment & got another job after 3 months & worked for about 2 months & I was fighting everyday to get paid, so I no longer work there (family owned). I am still waiting for the rest of the money they owe me & it's been six months. Anyway it's been 2 1/2 months since my original lay off, my resume is totally botched now, because have a job, then switch a job, have a job then switch a job…..it was not my choice, I was laid off. Now, nobody will even look at my resume when they can get other resumes from people that recently got laid off & no gaps. Just so you know, I am 43 & before my “original” lay off I only had 4 jobs in my entire life time with no gaps. I've always worked. My field was in insurance, so I have to do a career change & nobody wants a 43 year old with a career change. The insurance market is flooded with resume's especially now with the AIG crap. I am not looking for a handout! It’s not fun when I do not have insurance & I should be tested for breast cancer every 6 months. That is not my idea of a hand out….there is none. I am putting my life at risk to be unemployed. I have 2 kids, & I do not qualify for any type of medical, food stamps or welfare & now I do not have any unemployment. I could be dyeing right now. I live in Texas & I finally had to break down & apply for food stamps (BTW I didn't qualify single mom 2 kids) anyway they sent my info to the Worksource & the Worksource sent me letters for me to get retrained. I went down took all of the test, paid for gas, babysitter for 4 days. Well, when I went back to the Worksource they told me that education would take too long & I needed to get a job now instead of going to school. Like right hand outs…..go figure. I just want to work & live.

Hmmm… Let's see here … I have been unemployed off and on for almost 2 years now. Notice I said OFF & ON. That would mean that I have been putting in serious effort in seeking employment. I lost all of my health benefits along with my “decent” paychecks. I had an emergency surgery (life threatening) last year that put me so far in debt, I couldn't see straight. So I had to claim Bankruptcy in order to have some sort of sanity (by the way, I didn't have a single credit card debt on my bankruptcy claim … so I am not someone that is irresponsible with money or credit cards). I have worked my butt off since I was 14 years old (I'm 40 now), and I have always paid my bills on time and have paid my taxes on time. But now that our country is experiencing an all out Depression (thanks Bush Admin) I am now behind on my taxes (thanks to having to PAY taxes on unemployment benefits aka kicking an already dead dog), and now I will be losing what little I have been trying to survive on now because CONGRESS thinks I'm a crackhead with no motivation to work??? WOW!!! AMAZING!!! Thanks for punishing hardworking Americans with your ridiculous logic. SHAME ON YOU!!! I hope you enjoyed your Crystal & caviar last weekend while I drank a bottle of Pepto-Bismol to relieve the ulcer I now have, thanks to you! I'm sure you will all feel MUCH better when all the people that have worked so hard to pay your way (yeah, we the people that pay our taxes, pay YOUR wages) will be living in TENT CITIES all across the great US of A!!! Just remember that their is a nice warm place waiting for you at the end of your journey called life. Or you could change that karma and help all of the good people that have pride and care about our nation and our families. If mandatory drug testing is what is needed to get some financial help … then point me to the nearest office!

The letter below was written 3 years ago next month. When I first got laid off, I was out of work for 8 weeks and collected unemployment for 6 of those weeks, I had it for 3 months to get laid off again. Then I worked a contract position, for 2 months. I then had to get back on unemployment. Now that my resume if chopped up, no company will not even look at it. I am what you call a 99er. I’ve worked all of my life, never have I been unemployed once in my life and I can’t even get food stamps, welfare, and now unemployment. I was really right on target below. Because everything I said 3 years ago, is now in the news today I should have ran for presidency. I don’t know where I’m going to live with my 2 girls. I even went down to the Texas Unemployment to see if they will get me educated, and go figure but I don’t qualify because I don’t have a degree. and Rick Perry says he is helping Texans. Well I’m not getting any help. This is America….. I should have ran for president, I predicted this 3 years ago.

Last January (01/19/2007), I got the news that I was being laid off along with 600 other people in my company because our work is going to India . I want to go public about this….it seems to me that many people are not really aware of how many jobs and what type’s of jobs are going over seas.

I work in insurance, who would have thought that my job would be outsourced of all things. During this time being I have been doing allot of research on this and I found out that nobody is safe especially the white collar workers. I found allot of articles about the “IT” being outsourced and it was all over the presidential debate back in 2004. I can’t find anything about it this time around. It’s like they are keeping

This is what I found out and I am sure there are more. My kid’s cartoons are being done in India , which means an American artist has to change careers. Our X-ray’s are being read by radiologist in India , who would have thought that a Radiologist would have to worry about his job being outsourced? The articles in magazines are being outsourced, who does that affect? Our journalist of course. Speaking about journalist, the TV anchors are being outsourced. Start paying attention when the news is showing a place in a city but then they place the news person in front of the footage. You can tell it’s not live. The HR people are being outsource….that’s comforting, knowing that the Indians have all of our personal information (Social security #, Account #). They can just take it and run with it. I recently saw on TV that they can have a surgeon in America perform surgery in France thru a robot. Everbody better think that one through because I can see it actually being turned around and the hospitals in America will hire a surgeon from India at lower pay to perform surgery here in the states. So American surgeons be careful! Check this one out, I read several articles about the military is being outsource. How Un-American!! Come on terrorist go apply.

The bottom line is nobody is safe. The one thing I would like the most is to have President Bush and the other politicians that believe that outsourcing is great I want them to see my daughters cry because their mommy can’t find a job due to outsourcing. I have two more paychecks and the market is flooded with resumes, there are not enough jobs in my field here. Close to 600 people need jobs just from my company alone. Some people have to go into early retirement…now isn’t that funny, the government wants you to work longer now like 72 but nobody wants you.

I might be forced into making a choice to pay my mortgage and not pay my car. But if I pay my mortgage I would lose my car and then I wouldn’t be able to find a job. Or if I do not pay my mortgage I will eventually lose my house but I would have my car and a place for my kids and I to sleep. Isn’t that comforting?

Isn’t anybody paying attention to the news about how many home are being foreclosed on? They say that there are million of jobs out there, but I would like to see President Bush go down to $7.00 on hour and see how long it will take to keep his house. Better yet, if somebody makes $7.00 on hour that means they make $14,560 a year before taxes….well 25% of that income goes in your gas tank. WOW, look what I get to look forward to.

Like I said before, the market is flooded in my field, and most of us will have to do a career change. Now I just wonder how many companies will offer me a job when my sole background is insurance especially at my age of 41.

I really apologize that this is so long, but I want to make a difference. When I tell people that my job is being outsourced, they always tell me “I’ve heard “something” about that”, but they really do not know how it affects people and how many. There are millions and millions of people. I want bill boards, commercials, more articles, I want the every American citizen educated that this is dangerous!

I am a single mother trying to protect my children’s present and future along with all American people. I am really scared, and by the way this outsourcing is not for globalizations, it helps the CEO’s get richer. After all this is said and done, my company alone will save $380 Million dollars. Now who is going to get that money? Now that I am losing my job is President Bush going to help me get work? NOT! and another thing, I’m finding out that when a company uses the phrase “restructuring” well you know what that means. I wonder when the American CEO’s jobs will be outsourced…..I would love to see that!

One more thing, when you call your cable company do you get good service? Your bank? Your cell phone? Your credit card? Car loan? I can go on and on but the bottom line is every time somebody talks to the “1-800” number chances are that they are talking to India and they need to remember for every job created in India an American has lost their job.

Hillary Clinton mentioned in a debate last month about outsourcing and it can work…because she believes to educate American for jobs that can not be outsourced. What about me, I’m 41 years old. Is she going to educate me for a career change…..NOT! She mentions that are millions of jobs out there but look at the pay scale. If she considers $7.00 on hour a living then she needs to talk to me and other Americans. The only thing she is worried about is stopping the tax break for companies that outsource. How does that help me out? They should give companies tax breaks that hire Americans instead of outsourcing. Then on top of that Hillary debates that it is the technology that is being outsourced. I would love for her plans for me because my job has nothing to do with technology. You and I both know she could answer that publicly.

It seams like the rich keep getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Middle class is going down the drain. I am or was a middle class American. I needed medical care done but I couldn’t afford it. The rich can pay for the deductibles, the poor qualify for assistance, therefore they get help but the middle class people can’t get the healthcare because they can’t afford it or qualify for assistance.

The bottom line outsourcing is being known as globalization but the bottom line is companies are not outsourcing for globalization there are doing if to make money. CEO’s do not give a damn about globalization they want the money. Has Hillary asked a CEO why they have outsourced? She won’t get the answer it was for globalization.

I have copied and pasted a list of companies that outsourced their staff to India . Now that is sad. Please help me make this outsourcing stop and make every American aware of what is really happening!

I know that you are aware of what is going on, but I just wanted you to hear it first hand from somebody that is actually going through this that is not in IT or Technology.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

*************

I think writing on this blog will not help, a major viral Internet grass roots movement is needed. We need to post our stories, but the stories have to be legit with verifiable documentation, one fraudelent poster would kill any gains made. My situation: I'm 44, I've been in tht IT business a long time, rampant age discrimination is evident. This will hurt American business in general when you have shoddy IT services or support.

devon.. contrary to what you say, insurance is most assuredly an entitlement which is gained via premium payments. Thextensions to IU are understandable in this terrible economy but you missed my point entirely. i do not mean to attack people enduring genuine hardship, but i am simply pointing out that the longer payments are continued, the more people will feel comfortable receiving them..especially my well off early-retiree friends. I KNOW they never looked seriously for employment as they told me! This doesn’t mean that millions are not suffering and need help, but the cost of that help is increasingly unaffordable. Our budget deficits will cause the national debt to rise exponentially as interest payments become untenable. Then sovereign default will create a future immeasurably worse for all of us. I fear that most lost jobs will NEVER return and that our economic decline can only be slowed down by money printing but not prevented. And that also will have a truly ugly end. To all out there who are in pain, I wish you luck and these stories have truly moved me. Unfortunately i have no idea how to stop these terrible forces any more than our short-sighted “leaders” who caused this mess.

I could care less which party does what. Give us ALL jobs or give us unemployment. At this point the lies to America must stop. The truth must be reported by mainstream media (ABC, CBS, and NBC) the only person close to this is Ed Schultz MSNBC. How can something as bad as the numbers of unemployed (millions) not be in the news or receive a Google page 1 paragraph. Everyday on Google you have to search for unemployment information. When the truth is told the facts should include ALL of the unemployed, not those confusing Tiers but include those over 99 weeks.
They not only lie about the recovery effort but they lie about the help being given. Most Americans think there are jobs available and we would rather collect unemployment. The current bill HR – 4213 is only an EXTENSION of the Tiers 1 thru 4. This does not cover those requiring a tier 5 (over 99 weeks unemployed – 99ers). The passing of this bill misleads America into believing all unemployed are receiving help. When this bill is passed we will still have to wait for ANOTHER bill to be passed for us 99ers. In addition people covered by this bill may soon become 99ers as well. If you have 98 paid weeks and this bill is passed you will only receive 1 week of pay. Then you too will become a 99er without a check!
The 99ers will then have to wait for another bill with a Tier 5 to be created. Then there’s the August recess. (another vacation break). This will probably be done months from now just in time for the November elections. By then there will be millions on welfare and homeless. Congress, the Senate, both Presidents all know the truth, so how do they keep UPI, Reuters and Google from covering our plight. The truth is out there.

To the President:
How can you congratulate each other for the approval of a half completed bill forgetting the 99ers and the Tier 5 unemployment extension? As far as I'm concerned your approval rating is 0%. We definitely want the Republicans out. Your weak lack of leadership during this unemployment situation and the spineless Democrats not requesting help for a Tier 5 and the 99ers is unforgivable. What I have noticed is when a problem has been resolved then and only then do you stand a take credit. Remember those extensions you signed only last until November and you know sufficient jobs will not appear by then. By then there will be more people reaching 99 weeks then ever. How stupid do you think we are? I don't know what Americans you're patting yourselves on the back for helping but we were not just thrown in front of the bus but mowed-ed down and left for dead. You need you to stand up now. Not after someone else resolves the problem and you once again take credit. It's a time for change all right! Change all of you right out of office!

Right about saving. What ever happened to saving for a rainy day? So you can take care if yourself when times are hard? Instead of saving the average American family has been living beyond their means for years, buying things they can not afford with money they never had. And all of this money by the way is being borrowed. And you and the government all know out grandchildren will have to pay the bills. How dishonorable to burden future generations so we can have what we want right now, like children? We have no honor anymore, no dignity, and so we deserve our sorry place in the world now.

ALL the news media outlets have been reporting that ALL people over 6 months on unemployment will be getting a federal extension from OBAMA.

THIS IS NOT TRUE. 99ERS+ will NOT be getting anything.

They group of 99ERS will be increasing by the week.
Is there an internet counter of this total.

My family thinks that it is MY FAULT for not having a job…

Three are retired, and the other two had their jobs
since before stuff happened…

All having had uninterrupted income for the duration…

———
I have one more face to face job interview next week, if I do NOT get the job I will be homeless.
———
I have found out that corporate execs bonuses are in some cases tied to the successful outsourcing of their work.

HP is a case in point. They are expanding their local help desk crew to 60 people here in Michigan. The reason for doing it locally, is that they have a fat contract that states they must have the troops stateside.

HP also has their WEB site pages done in MEXICO!!!

During a job interview I ask them if they had any HIGH END computer jobs available at their local site. The interviewer GOT MAD AT ME and said
“we don't have any of those jobs!!!”

It seems like they are TRYING to destroy the traditional american working class.

Whenever jobs do become available, someone at the place already has them reserved for a friend or relative.

yes most people think you get UE untill you get a job, also how could the government NOT know how many have exhausted benefits, i thought you were supposed to note it in your last UE claim. The # is likely so high, they just don't want to say. I am on my final Tier 4 and things aint lookin good. Had 6 interviews in 19 months and never heard from employer after, even after I called HR and left msg. on vmx, one interview they were even telling me about the training for the new computer system starting the following week, I was quite certain I got the job and they thanked me profusely for coming in. I am looking for secretarial work, that is by far the worst profession to be in, salaries are $11-$12/hr, in 2007 I made over $19 an hour, was fired from that job and after 9 months took a massive pay cut to $16/hr were I worked for a yr. before my job was eliminated and I don't know if i've been replaced or not but I do know I spent most of the day on personal stuff and got in trouble each and every time, yet they would not give me anyting to do and told me to make myself useful which I am unable to do since by nature I am work avoidant. The 99'rs HAVE been beaten down. I know I am so depressed i can barely function, am often in my pjs till noon. I am not finding jobs I am a perfect fit for and I know that is what employers expect, the jobs I am called in to interview for I am not getting hired for tho of the 6 interviews 4 were for jobs I just applied to to get UE cause you need 3 ft jobs per week and often there just aint any that you have a 95% match to. i dunno how the rest of you manage to keep your spirits up unless y'all are married or living with someone. Talk about depressing, last week i interviewed for a file clerk job, the only task being filing 8 hr.s a day 5 days a week, mind you i have a college degree, am in my mid 40's and the job paid $11/hr. i'd rather be homeless than take a job like that so I hope they don't offer it to me, I allready asked about other oppurtunities and they pretty much told me unless I wanna work as a back up receptionist on saturdays, they won't cross train me to help the other office staff cause i'd be so busy pulling files for the doctors i'd have no time to do anythign else. oh and guess what they are automating the practice so once all the records are computerized i'd be out of a job again.

Folks,

I think the best thing at this point is to vote. Vote Democrat, and make sure that the obstructionism in D.C. STOPS!
I've seen the lamentations of the long-term unemployed, and side and feel for their positions, which were no fault of their own. Many of you will be in dire straights shortly, and I wish there was something I could do……Believe me, I am an Iraq war vet, and am FURIOUS that you are getting NO HELP because of an obstructionist party that doesn't give two s**ts about you. THEY outsourced YOUR jobs. THEY trashed this economy. THEY sent me and thousands of others to a USELESS war, with money that could have gone to YOU! They are the ones denying YOUR benefits!
I have watched as bill after bill was introduced, then pared down by the obstructionists, or outright filibustered, because of “fiscal responsibility”.
This is interminable, and unacceptable. This country, which I fought for, and some of my boys died for, is slowly being flushed down the drain, by a party that because of their massive losses in 2008, are punishing YOU NOW for it!
It makes no sense to vilify the entire Congress for the actions of a minority party that seems to STILL be in charge, just by intransigence and an unwillingness to WORK on your behalf, because they don't like the skin tone of the holder of the highest office in our land! THAT is a pretty s***ty reason to keep you down!

Make no mistake, it's because of President Obama's residency in the White House that YOU are made to suffer! Republicans are the ones you should be angry at. THEY are this country's downfall, if they take control of either house come this November! If that happens, you may as well accept being homeless.

China has already overtaken us economically. The middle east has us by the balls with our dependence on THEIR oil! You can thank Republicans for that!

VOTE people! VOTE DEMOCRAT! Make sure that there will be NO MORE obstructionism! Republicans HAVE NO ideas how to get us back on our feet! Know why? THEY WANT THIS COUNTRY TO FAIL!

One more thing, people……..

Go to MSNBC's website and E-mail Ed Schultz. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU! Let your voice be heard by Ed! HE works on YOUR behalf! I will continue to work on YOUR behalf!

Then, let the obstructionist Republicans hear your voice, by voting DEMOCRAT in November! They are our only hope.

Had NAFTA never been sign 16+ years ago a lot of our manufacturing jobs would still be here (remember what Ross Perot said?) and thus more opportunities for employment. Amazing that I don't hear anyone talk about this and push the government to pull out of that sorry-ass, one-sided, free- trade agreement treaty. It worked in outsourcing a lot of our jobs overseas and had American manufactures pulling up long established roots and make a killing in share profits. Setting up shop in third world countries giving them a peice of the pie, employing their workers, that whined about America being so prosperously hording . But it didn't bring foreign manufactures into this country over time to help offset the job lost. So, in short, that is one of the main reasons we are in this state of economical turmoil.

The Banks and Shareholder's got even more greedy and forgot about the American people in the ethics and morals of once saying proudly; Build American for Americans. Now the scale of Classes is uneven and causing a wide riff in America. Socialism can brew up from this when Capitalism runs amok and only benefits the Upper Class, suppressing the Middle Classes by enlarging the Lower Class. Damn, I should of ran for political office!

Nor do you posess any knowledge what so ever in economics or anything about this country for that matter. If America is a Socialist country, then why are you here? Apparently looking for work? Or apparently taking money from Americans to send back to your country of origin. No matter where that might be, apparently you could not make a living where you came from. So we must be doing something right or you would'nt be here. However, until you know what your talking about or until you can respect our county, then why don't you go home if you don't like us? Or is the American dollar so good for you. Talk about a socialist! Obviously the people you know are like you, Ignorant and miss informed, with the knowledge of a third grader. Small minds too busy with rabble-rouser idiocy can't be expected to have an honest opinion. Fear and hate are all Fox, and the right-wing noise machine are peddling these days. It must be something to get some sort of sick satisfaction kicking those who are down. And they call themselves American.
They'll gladly hand over our wealth to foreign interests, set up deals with our enemies for petroleum products, send our kids into battle for the sake of saving face, and BS us into thinking we are looking for a “terrorist” we NEVER looked for, until President Obama took office, and they call him a “muslim” because it fits their fear and hate mantra that they sell to small minds like this john guy.

Forget him, he's not worth it. None of the clowns who support the right-wing agenda are. They don't have the foggiest clue how to get us back on our feet, and will do and say anything to thwart attempts to do so.
It's up to the ones victimized by them, and those of us who side, and support them in this fight. The future of this country is at stake. I, for one will NOT let it fail!

It is people like you that talk of doing away with unemployment and Social Security that one day may need those very things and maybe you just will be lucky enough to not get them then lets see how much screaming you do when they take your house, your car, you have no money for school lunches and no food and the list goes on!! Why is there a cap on number of weeks of unemployment for people who have lost their job and remember these people paid into unemployment.
You continue to give to the welfare why not put X number of weeks on these people as most never worked.

What every person who has exhausted their benefits should do on election day is to make sure Pelosi does not get re-elected number one. Secondly other than her district just go to the polls take you little card into the booth and not vote for anyone. Thats right leave it blank. this will make news folks and with over 4 million of us they will get the right count. If there is a reporter outside your polling place walk over, introduce yourself as a 99er and tell them you turned in a blank card because your message to the Rpesident and your Governor is “You don't want to help us, we don't want to help you.”

This should not be happening in America and I am ashamed of the Government for not continuing to help the 99ers. These people were all hard working contributors to society. They worked full time for a living and by no fault of their own, lost their job. They paid into the system all the years that they worked and now when they need continued help during this terrible time of unemployment, the government is cutting them off. I know a lot of people who are unemployed and many of them are 99ers… These people are not lazy by any means. They are trying their best to find work, any work, that they can get, but with no success. Until they find work, it is the responsibility of the American Government to help these people. Too many have already lost everything…and the number keeps growing with each day that passes….

WOW lets look at the logic here. The today Show, and Nightly news will post a missing person, the weather, the stock quotes, International news, catching a predator, fleecing of america, and news that one could give a rat's arse about. When the tier 5 issue is BURNING the internet up, there is NO media coverage. Senators do not return e-mails. Today Show, Nightly news, does not touch…Only chatrooms, and blogs are fielding responses for tier 5……Not until someone does something stupid because they re broke. Imagine not getting a job for 2 years from now. What will you do? How will you act 6 months from now if you cannot find a job(that you have been looking for forever) and the food stamps run out and the TANF runs out….we are in for some heavy, heavy shiznit…Is this the 'Right Track' that I have been hearing from our elected officials? PLEASE PASS TIER 5!!!!!!

lets put it this way.. the gov't does not even care about the homeless, what makes anyone think that they are caring about the 99'rs? Unless you have an income of at least 250,000.00 a year, live in a fine home, fly to destinations every other month, and above all contribute to these politicians campaign funds that are beyond our yearly incomes, then you are a nobody. I have not hit the end of all of the tiers yet, and I am still waiting to get my unemployment going again, yes each state drags their feet, but I really don't know what I will do when all of the unemployment is gone and still not able to find employment. I feel for each and everyone of you 99'rs and my prayers are going out to you that something will change quickly for you. DON'T give up the fight, keep your words going out to the gov't that you need help. Someone is going to do something, as it is an election year. They are just waiting to see who steps up to the plate to get the ball rolling.

And maybe you should learn to walk in other peoples shoes to feel exactly what they are going through. That is what is wrong with the world today, people like you that does not want to feel anything. You sit there cushy in your home, with no problems right now, but you know what? KARMA is a mf'er.. what goes around comes around. And that goes for everything you think, say, do.. You really need to get a life, and learn what life is REALLY all about. You are one of those that says ” I have mine, and I am not going to worry about anyone else. Not voting, takes away the only right you still have to show how you feel about representatives not listening to you.
VOTES—that is the only language the politicians understand.
If they can stop you from voting-they have won taking EVERY right that they can, from Americans.
Instead of not voting-email BOTH parties how you will not vote for them if they have not heard your wishes.
Your family UNIT will not re-elect them if they do not act, and immediately!

I wish that those in Congress could experience what we 99ers are living through. We live in Las Vegas where unemployment is currently 14.5%, bankrupcy and foreclosure is common place. We are becoming a local society of the rich and the poor. However, we no longer have the working poor, as we are unable to find jobs. It hurts more than I can explain to wonder where we will be able to live and how we will be able to feed ourselves. Representatives listen to us, we need help. We are working Americans who were not born with silver spoons in our mouths. We can't live without JOBS. Until jobs are available extend unemployment with Tier V. We have sent you to Washington to help Americans not turn your back on us when we need you to stand up, propose TierV and then VOTE. VOTE for what is right not what your party affiliation believe is right. But what is right for 40 million Americans who are struggling to survive in an economy that they were not responsible for. Look around at the faces you represent and do the right thing!!

I happen to be an Independent who is also a progressive. I'm not grousing like you about the President, when I know where the problem lies. President Obama has shown himself to be a centrist. Is that so hard to believe? Sure, I didn't like some of his decisions, but taken in context, I didn't like Bush sending me to Iraq….FOR NOTHING either!!!

There was not a single thing in my comment that is NOT TRUE. You are blaming the wrong one. Your defeatism is what will put a Republican in the White House, if it infects more who are desperate. The Democrats are working ALONE! don't you GET IT?! The Republicans won't work in this country's interest, or the middle class, or for YOU.
I think you better look real hard at what you are saying and thinking……I don't mean that as a jab……because you have given up. I haven't, and a lot of the unemployed haven't. We are Americans, damn it, and we don't give up. We don't surrender. Just because the Democrats haven't done things to your satisfaction is no reason to spread that chicken little attitude.

I think you better change your screen name…..it just doesn't fit what you just wrote.

What you peddling, anyway? More desperation? More fear?

These people need HELP. The Dems are the only party they will get that from. The baggers? Don't make me laugh, they're already doing a fantastic job at that! The Republicans won't do squat for anyone but the rich. You rich?

I fully understand the problems of the deficit..I truly do. And we need to spend money creating jobs…no issue. But, it is the OVERLAP that will cause the issues. What do people do while we wait for this creation??? I have worked steadily since I was 16 1/2. I have paid into this system for many, many years. I have NEVER collected an unemployment check until 2007. I have 2 college degrees. I am overqualified , or too old, or whatever for the low paying jobs.

If there is ANYONE out there that truly thinks that the vast majority of unemployed peple who earned 35,000 a year or more are sitting around on their arses happy to collect maybe 15,000 a year then you are a damn fool.

Other outlets don’t create their own news, as Fox does. They also don’t use Goebbel’s propaganda methods either, as Fox does.Remember ACORN? That was pure, fabricated bulls**t. They were found to have done NOTHING wrong. Now thew poor have one less avenue to get help. Remember Shirley Sherrod? Pure unadulterated character assassination, and that’s not even including the racist element. Not from Sherrod, but that piece of human filth from the baghead movement.Other outlets are also critical of President Obama. If YOU watched other outlets, you would KNOW that. I see how it is…..Ten minutes at MSNBC, fifteen minutes at CNN, and the rest of the day getting your fix of bulls**t propaganda at Fox. Can’t be critical of other’s choices when your own are worse. Every state has a cap on welfare…. there is no such thing as a welfare lifer anymore. Caps include but are not limited to duration and family size. Additionally, to receive welfare, recipients are required to participate in job training prior to receiving benefits and while they are collecting the benefits. MANDATORY! They must also show verifiable proof as well.

The state of our economy is beating and battering everyone. It's mathematically impossible to think that there are enough jobs to go around to everyone that is unemployed. Time for pointing the finger is over. The blame game & what about them is childish bafoolery.

Stop, take a deep breath, gather your thoughts! What can you do now that will have a lasting impact on your future later. The old way of doing things doesn't work… it never did! Create your own employment, be your own boss. Find a way to reep the rewards from the seeds that you will soon sow!

This is a touchy subject to comment on, because there are excellent positions available — but the 99ers are not properly getting in front of these opportunities for consideration. I am very sympathetic to their situation, but the reality is that it should not take 2 years for anyone to find a position.

I can say this because I have been a job search professional helping people find jobs for 21+ years. On average, it takes my clients 5 weeks to find a position — even in these difficult economic times.

The problem is not that the 99ers are lazy or inept, but they are using ineffective methods to find a job (online ads, recruiters and networking). Of course, these are the techniques society “teaches” job seekers to follow, but these techniques, on average, take 8-10 months to be successful. So, we then have a huge population of capable workers out of work for long periods of time — which is a drain on themselves and their families … and society.

To help during this difficult economic time, I created a free job search website that will show the Secret to Successful Job Search — how to get in front of key decision makers within companies before the position is advertised. It also includes free resumes, letters, interview questions and instructional videos.

If you are a 99er or know one, I hope this will help!

I've voted in every election since I was 18. I've never voted Republican because it is simply too hard for working class people when they are in power. This time, I'm voting with my silence. 99ers were, as a matter of policy discarded from the American landscape. Pushing 60, I can't find a job, even minimum wage. I'm not unskilled, I'm reliable and will work any day/hours. I used to be a job developer, working with displaced workers and I know those over 40 have a tough time, especially women and men over 50. The administration knows that too. After watching clips of Obama's economic town hall today, it occurred to me that while we have ethnic diversity in politics, we have no economic diversity in this administration. Politicians, appointees, staffers are mostly 6 – figure employees, they don't even KNOW anyone working class, except maybe their nanny or housekeepers. In other words, they don't have a clue. People from generational political families who somehow decided that their “calling” would be to tell the rest of us what to do and how to live….how can people whose daily per diem (tax free) is more than what the avg family of 4 lives on begin to wisely set policy for a country this diverse? I remember watching Tom Daschel when he was Speaker of the House roll over like a cheap date and assert because the Dem's were in the minority they could do nothing. Well, they've been in the Majority and they still want to pretend they can do nothing. That's nonsense, and nothing but a very weak excuse for those of us who were not born yesterday.
Every wonder who keeps voting for the hard right? Well, in Ca., it's government employee union members. Over 40% of union workers vote Republican. Those were government workers and government retirees (lots of military) who showed up at those town halls opposing health care for the working class. I don't think I'm going to waste my time voting to help secure a good wage and lifetime health care for people who begrudge me an antibiotic. After years of fear mongering by the political class over terrorism, it occurred to me that public policy in this country is much more likely to cause death and disability to the working class than a terrorist attack. The terrorist are not after me, they are after the political class, can I really afford to care? No I can't.
For my part, I'm tired of a couple of things. I'm tired of the white house telling me how lucky I am that they diverted a depression. I'm not lucky and neither are any 99ers. Their friends on Wall Street are lucky, lousy teachers, cops and fireman are lucky, not me. I'm tired of the White House telling me what a good deal this new health care reform is. There is absolutely nothing offered that government workers haven't enjoyed for decades. There is no limits on their taxpayer sponsored policies and never has been. There is no cancellation of coverage for government employees and never has been. So in the future, if I can survive physically long enough, and am not one of the 35million that will never have coverage, I can buy in, if I can afford it at full rates. Shove it Obama, all you did was insult my intelligence. You cut a deal and tried to sell a piece of crap to the rest of us. The ones who will benefit most are the again government workers whose kids are now covered (on my thin dime) until they are 26, up from age 23. I'm also tired of getting dunned for $5 contributions for Dem campaigns. Apparently they know the country is broke but they still think the poor will give them $5 so they can enjoy big salaries as political consultants. Craig's List does have an offer to work a campaign in Louisiana for $400 a week as a contract employee so they don't have to pay into SS or Unemployment. Now that's setting a real example…
So Mr. Obama, you keep your free bumper stickers, and you can count me out until unless you quit pretending I don't exist except around election time. Ignoring the 99ers might keep the official unemployment rate under 10% but it's not fooling the public. I'm not supporting government unions anymore because they don't support me. A few years on the Hail Mary Health Care Plan for them might adjust their attitude. In Ca. their mantra is “we were promised” when it comes to their contract. Well guess what, we were all promised that if we did the best we could and were good citizens none of us would be denied the basics of life. I guess, like a game of musical chairs, the 99ers have lost the game. I just wonder how much will be saved on SS if they can just get us to die before we are old enough to draw a check.

I only hope with all my heart that all the people that are saying we 99ers are lazy and don’t want to work…..NEVER find themselves in our situation. People, look around you, ALL these millions of people out of work, losing their homes, COULD NOT deliberately want to loss their homes. You can’t possibly believe that. I no longer have unemployment checks and am living on my last ira. After that, don’t know what I will do, God help us all.

Ok,…..Lets put it out there streight up! Just before Bush got out of office He had pushed a bill threw for I believe it was 750 BILLION. The Banks should of gotten nothing. The automotive ind. Should not of either. It was our tax money….You and mine. Every American working citizen. There are many many like myself that have paid taxes all there life, and we should. We have not collected unemployment untill the last 3 years due to the economic problems. The point here is that that money should have been put back into the common working mans pocket. A check of around 250. Thousand would of gone out to all of us. We could have all ready turned this thing around. Americans could have paid off most of there homes ….invested and still put every day money back into the United States by means of common spending. I am sure that some of us may have opend a small business. I am truly sorry that it did not happen taht way. Now What??? We all want to work!!! The small amount of unemployment will only pay the rent and some groceries and may be a few hygenic needs along with basic needs to FIND WORK….Gas….Car .Keep the beast running. ….You see though….That puts money back int a UN Thrivig Economy.DAHh………..Why are being denied the basics??? It will all have to be paid back! Yes it will. I know we as americans care about our children and our grand children. That is our way. Just remember….. we, the unworking did not create this mess…..can we get us out of it?? Yes, I know we can. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out. The 99ers and the next set of them to follow need help now. Just that simple. I understand that ther are alot more issues that need to be addressed……But we need a starting point. JUST A SIMPLE MAN OF 56 out of work for the last 2 and a half years. Prior to taht…………Worked my A@@ off all my life. READY TO DO IT AGAIN AS I KNOW SO MANY OTHERS ARE> Is it WE THE PEOPLE,,,,? or ….Just a few?

“Our” government needs to extend these benefits to all the 99er’s immediately. We are losing everything we’ve worked so hard for, our houses, our cars, our personal possessions & heirlooms, and in some cases, our families. Nearly all of the 99er’s truly want to find a job. To those who think we are all lazy, that’s a pure crock of s**t. Nearly everyday in the news are more reports of companies laying off people. It’s tough to find a job as it is, but then the pool of those seeking the very few new jobs keeps getting bigger. The way to help the economy and the jobless is to extend these benefits NOW!!! We will use this much-needed money to buy everyday basics like food, gas, supplies, etc…a way to truly stimulate the economy. Come on Washington, WAKE UP!!! We are U.S. citizens…start helping us first instead of sending billions over to countries who don’t even want us there!!!

March 22, 2011 There is no help for 99ers, but 225 MILLION for Libya, $$$ for Egypt, $$$ for Japan. I am college educated, lost home, burned through savings and no unemployment TANF welfare, one has to pay back with IRS interest, yet $500 per month on TANF won’t get me rent, so my kids and I live in car. NOW, once perfect credit is blown, so another bad mark against me for a job. Don’t know how much longer I can keep positive, prayer is not helping anymore. TSUNAMI here in US, show us the mercy Mr. President you are showing other countries…..

There was an article in the USA today that said that states were cutting back aid in refrence to unemployment with some states cutting back as much as 25% of aid to the long-timed unemployed and they justify this as saying that a lot states are seeing a growth in job creation and the fact thaat the country is in a deep recession but the top 2% in this country is only seeing their assets increase but that capitalism for you they always put down communism socialism but this so-called capitalistic sure hurts the little man and one of their favorite sayings is ” PULL YOURSELF BY YOUR BOOT STRAPS I MADE SO CAN YOU” but they don’t likr to mention that they have the whole system in a monoply
