Unemployment Benefits Extension Now Law, States to Begin Disbursal Immediately

President Obama has just signed the bill extending unemployment benefits into law. Now, the 300,000 jobless workers per week exhausting their 26 weeks of state unemployment insurance benefits will be allowed to move onto federally funded benefits. Workers who have not had access to the federal extension since benefits lapsed on June 2 will be reimbursed. The extension carries forward to Nov. 30.

The unemployment insurance benefits were held up in the Senate over concerns over the deficit for an unprecedented two months. Never before has Congress allowed extended benefits to lapse with the national unemployment rate over 7.2 percent. The rate is currently 9.5 percent.

Thats is great for you all now how about woken on extending benefits past 99 weeks for us that have lost everything and I mean everything. I have been with out any money since March with no hope insight. My kids are way under weight and what little scrapes we can get goes right to them. I have been looking for work day in and day out even tried for a job to shovel crap at the zoo for a few dollars just to give my kids something to eat. Still nothing not even a simple return call or a thanks but no thanks email. How sad when no one in the world can even give a simple reply. I am at my end and there seems to be nothing I can do about it. My poor kids did not ask for this life and all they ask for is just something to eat. It kills me to tell them we have no food and on top of that we don't even have any soap to clean our self. Woken hard all your life to lose a job that was not any fault of our doing just is not fair. Wish I had a pack of crackers to give to my kids for dinner tonight. I am sure our elected officials don't give a rats ass about the well being of us they go home eat wonderful meals and get cleaned day in an day out with out a care in the world. And they all take it for granted. What to do what to do I have no clue. Next step for us to to look at the possibility of putting our kids up for adoption just so they can have food and a roof over there heads. I don't know but I don't want to see them suffer like I am anymore. It is killen me. Wish you all much success and hope that things get better for you soon.

I don't know where you live, but I do know that most states have a program to feed children. Local food banks while over run could supply you with the basics. Believe me I know I used them. If fact last year I donated to them, while it was hard to face the people I used to support, It was better then going hungry. Since you have access to a computer why not find the local food bank in your area. Check church's, rotary and other civic organizations, if they don't have it, they will know who does. Good Luck

I think you have the extension wrong. It says its for the states that are 8% and up and states that are set at 99 weeks. It does not say that the ones over 99 weeks does not get it. Check with your unemployment office.

Obama chides Republicans for thwarting jobless extension

July 17, 2010 | 7:22 a.m.

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama stepped up criticism of Republicans Saturday for blocking jobless aid, hammering home a Democratic election year attack line that casts the opposition as the party of the rich.

“Too often, the Republican leadership in the United States Senate chooses to filibuster our recovery and obstruct our progress. And that has very real consequences,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Senate Republicans have used the filibuster, a procedural hurdle demanding 60 votes in the 100-member chamber, to block at least three Democratic initiatives to extend unemployment insurance. Republicans cite the need to curb government spending amid a record budget deficit.

“Think about what these stalling tactics mean for the millions of Americans who've lost their jobs since the recession began. Over the past several weeks, more than two million of them have seen their unemployment insurance expire,” the president said.

Obama has made job creation his top domestic priority and has traveled repeatedly to the U.S. heartland to tout policies that lift hiring, including a trip to Holland, Michigan, on Thursday for the groundbreaking of an electric car battery factory that has received federal dollars.

U.S. growth has resumed after the worst recession in decades, thanks in part to a $862 billion stimulus plan Obama signed last year.

But this recovery has been slow to produce new jobs, and his Democrats risk punishment by voters in congressional elections Nov. 2 unless there is a drop in unemployment, now running at 9.5 percent.

Time is running out. A recent poll showed confidence in Obama's economic stewardship has flagged, and Democrats could lose control of the House of Representatives in November. All 435 seats in the House are up for grabs, as well as 36 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate.

Frustratingly for the White House, its proposals to extend unemployment insurance, cut capital gains taxes on investments and set up a fund to boost lending to small businesses have been repeatedly blocked on Capitol Hill.

Republicans rejected the claim they were using congressional rules to thwart the process and said there had been no votes of any sort on small business lending.

“Nobody has 'used procedural tactics to block a simple, up-or-down vote.' It's just not accurate,” said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, referring to another of the president's remarks.

BUDGET DEFICIT

Senate Republicans say the country cannot afford more taxpayer-funded government spending, on top of Obama's emergency stimulus package, an argument that taps into public disquiet over a record budget deficit and rising debt.

But the White House, which says the the deficit should be tackled in the medium term once the labor market has properly healed, calls this politically motivated obstruction and says Republicans are siding with the rich.

“They say we shouldn't provide unemployment insurance because it costs money,” chided Obama.

“So after years of championing policies that turned a record surplus into a massive deficit, including a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, they've finally decided to make their stand on the backs of the unemployed,” he said.

The White House is particularly scornful of Republican criticism of the deficit, which is forecast to hit a record $1.56 trillion in the current fiscal year.

Obama's Republican predecessor George W. Bush inherited a surplus from Democratic President Bill Clinton, but handed Obama a $1.3 trillion deficit eight years later, which his White House blames on Bush-era tax cuts and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that were funded with deficits.

“They've got no problem spending money on tax breaks for folks at the top who don't need them and didn't even ask for them; but they object to helping folks laid off in this recession who really do need help,” Obama said.

I live in Los Angeles and you don't get to shop like you would at a supermarket, but a local Korean church has a food bank 1 day a week I was able to get bread peanut butter eggs and oatmeal. I am so sorry to hear that the food banks in your area are hurting that much. I know here it is against the law for restaurants to donate food to the needy, but maybe the law is different in your state. Why don't you call your local councilman and ask them if this could be done? It could be a write off for the restaurant? Just an idea, I wish I could do more.

so what happens after november 30th?

we're all screwed.

nice.

thanks obama.

especially since countless people's claims weren't even supposed to expire until December.

But November is the cut off now..

and still no jobs.

“change”

nice slogan in a time of need for people to latch on to.

are you out of your mind? obama has done nothing but add 25.00 to unemployment, temporarily. The extentions are said to be expireing this year in ct next month. health care? there's no free health care. and actually, by law you absolutely CAN NOT stay on unemployment “as long as you want”. hence, why you have to actively be seeking fulltime employment. The maximum amount is currently 99 weeks and that's WITH extentions, that will soon be cut. all you have to do is google it, people from all over the country are complaining. in fact, i found this, because I'm trying to figure out when my unemployment will expire. Ct's official website said the Emergency Extentions expire November 10,2010. Scary huh? Especially being that my unemployment was not supposed to run out until December. Let alone not be elgiable for an extention. and the whole health care thing makes me laugh. what health care has he provided? We already had Soga, Medicare, Medicaide and Huskey state run insurance programs. Now, actually he's cut down on Medicaide. Your view is clearly librel, so it's not very librel of president obama to no longer cover abortions under medicaide. (medicaide was created for pregnant women to cover any medical bills, including abortions= freedom of choice.) But that's what's ironic, parties never actually stick to their sides lately. Health Care reform actually has created more debt, and forced CT to cut back on education costs. Not to mention SOCIALIZED medicine… is a SOCIALIST ACT. nothing is free. they TAX you to pay for it. EXTREMELY HIGH. look at the numbers, do some research. these are facts, not opinions. socialism=left side political scale, which equals librel. Read Mershiemer's “The Tragedy of Great Power Politics”, Librel=idealist. Idealist is unrealistic. Nothing is free. Which means we might as well take “We the people” and change it to “We the leaders”. Because apparently the polls PROVING the majority of America doesn't understand who they're voting for or the parties must be very accurate. Socializing=socialism=loss of freedom. but i guess that's okay, for our own “stupid” good right? hahaha sit back and relax? well, you must believe that our founding fathers were wrong in saying the power is in the people then, huh? Learn an opinion before you make one, ESPECIALLY when reassuring false promises.

ps.

Obama also passed a bill recently that can now shut down the internet at any given point.

his reasoning.

in case of a “cyber threat”

which a 14 year old kid could do in their basement. but yeah, nows a good time to say it's to “protect us from terrorists” how convienent. that's what virus protection is for. or macs.

(aka a complete B*S reason to shut down the ONE source of complete access to world information)

why would a president want that kind of power?

pleaseee learn your facts. and bills get paid?

hm. so were your bills paid this year?

oh wait ! they must have been with all those new “jobs” he's created. right? (sarcasm obviously)

lawyers would approve, because THEYRE STILL MAKING MONEY.

you know hitler reached out to the germans in world war 2 in a time of great need with false promises as well, and was an excellent public speaker.

These are all true realities I have seen my daughter and son in law go through, and everyone is so bad off too that all the agencies are tapped out, everything gone. And everyone on SS or SSI no raise again for the second year, nothing going up tell that to my bank account, when gas is getting up to $3.00 and everything else is rising. But when I get a raise I pay more rent and then the foodstamps go down, I might get $2.00 out of a $14.00 raise, you never get a break to get a little ahead. How are people to make it? What happened to ALL PEOPLE ARE CREATED EQUAL, “NOT”, the poor people suffer while the politicians set up in luxury, and live high on the hog, guaranteed retirement they are set for life and take breaks while people are suffering, and when they make there cuts every year, it is the poor people programs get cut, Welfare, Foodstamps, SS and SSI, Medical,Mental Health, Unemployment. And they wound why so many people are commiting crimes, robbing people killing people robbing banks on and on. People are desperate, our nation has become a disgrace. People cannot find work just to make ends meet. I am trying to get back to Florida from New Jersey it would take about $3,000.00 to get there but no money and no one does if I knew 3,000 people I would ask for $1.00 each, but I am lucky to have 10 close friends . I wish everyone the Best Christmas they can have.
