Young, Long-Term Unemployed People Substantially Sicker

If you’re young and have been out of work for six months or more, you are also more likely to be sick — and, as a possible cause or effect, much less likely to have health insurance. (The effect was less exaggerated for older workers.) Gallup has more on one of the many costs of high and sustained unemployment: “Compared with those out of work for six months or less, the [young] long-term unemployed overall experience physical pain more often and are less likely to report feeling well-rested or having the energy they need.”

Needless to say, being so sick as to be unable to work six days a month seems a real hurdle to job-seeking.
