Reid: We Need One More Senator to Pass Unemployment Extension

By

Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is telling reporters that he has the votes of two Republicans for his extension of federal unemployment insurance benefits. He also says he is one vote away from having 60 senators to vote for cloture on the bill, which would then move forward to a final vote.

Though there are currently 58 members who caucus with the Democrats, meaning the addition of two Republicans brings the number to 60, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) is not in support of Reid’s bill. “If we had Senator Byrd’s replacement we would have 60,” Reid told The Hill. “We have to wait and see what a couple of Republicans do.” The two Republicans are most likely Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, both of whom have signaled they would be willing to vote for a standalone measure.

A Senate Democratic aide says gaining the 60th vote with both Collins and Snowe likely on board is proving extremely difficult — because Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) has indicated he will not vote for the proposal. This morning, he released a deficit-neutral version of the unemployment extension bill, paying for the benefits by taking money from the stimulus. If he or another Republican does not come around, Senate Democrats might have to wait until after the July 4 recess — when Sen. Robert Byrd’s replacement is in place — to pass the motion. More than 300,000 unemployed persons would lose extended benefits in the meantime — adding to the 1.2 million current toll.

The cloture vote will likely happen tomorrow. Reid told The Hill the homebuyer tax credit portion of the bill might pass under unanimous consent today.

I live in Michigan, unemployment is at 13.6, we were 14%! We need help. I am finishing my last week of unemployment if this does not pass. My husband is on a small pension. We have been looking for jobs for 14 months. Government needs to do what is right for the American People. We are tax payers even if we are on unemployment. It will be devastating here in MI, we still help the economy here even if it is with a small amount of money.

In reality I don’t really see the Republicans coming up with a suitable alternative, do you? They want to use stimulus money which would be worse than adding to the deficit. Also instead of working WITH the dems, they are being counterproductive. All in all they DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT US

I know it is 10.2 in GA and our Senators voted no. I would think they could do another 30 day and then when they get back from their wonderful vacations while millions of people will be moving this weekend because of an eviction notice and no money for food so they will probably pass out too from the heat.
They cause the deficit both sides so they should pay for it out of their pay, heck the older people in 2 years did not get a cost of living on their social security but they congress got their raise and now they cant even help the American People, so ashamed. I know foreign countries are laughing

The unemployed citizens within these Republican regions need to apply the pressure. How can any politician not support this lifeline to the American people. It is so obvious that the republican party does not represent the majority of the American people. If you are a big business, rich, offshore interest etc. you have a friend but that is not what the United States of America is all about. Send all republicans back to college maybe they can reconnect and learn something.
Everything they say and do is great material for the November elections. DO NOT VOTE FOR ANY REPUBLICANS FOR ANY REASON. THERE IS MORE OF US THAN THE 2% rich.

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) should be absolutely ashamed of himself. He was voted into office to support the direction of the Democratic party among other things. If the citizens had wanted to vote for a Republican who participates in gridlock, they would have voted that person in. Here's to you being voted out of office Ben.

As for anything else it will come as I need it. Please I beg you 60 senators save the millions who are needing you. I never thought 60 people could honestly effect millions.

I think the Senator should make sure that he has ALL HIS DUCKS IN A ROW PRIOR to proceeding with another vote this time. Havene't we all learned from our many mistakes.
And this supposed 'one' Republican Senator; is a Republican actually willing to finally STEP UP, and make the RIGHT decision for Americans? Is this possible?

The unemployment rate that the government puts out is a lie. It doesn't account for the people that have been unemployed for a long period of time the rate should be 16.6 percent. I praise Harry Reid what he us doing for the unemployed and I think everyone should let him know that we support him. I find it interesting that the home buyer tax credit will probably pass unanimously but, the extended benefits for unemployment won't. Once again, congress shows that they are on the side of the banks, not the people. The many millions of unemployed Americans still pay taxes and the money they spend is taxed. So, if we don't have money to spend, we won't have anything to be taxed and the government won't be getting that money back. I can guarantee you that I will talk to as many people as possible to ensure that NO REPUBLICAN receives any votes in the next election.

Sen. Ben needs to be uneployed to understand what it means to not have any money. He should not be re-elected at all. He is shamful and inconsidrate about people who are supporting family and paying bills. By the way, Sen. Nelson needs to be reminded that the unemployment insurance is already paid for by those who lost their job, but their money went to support the unnecessary war. JJ

I e-mailed both Snowe and Collins explaining the dire cosequences of 30,000 plus Mainers dependent on unemployment, glad they reponded positively. I understand the rightful concern regarding adding more debt, but brown of Massachusetts has a plan drawing from the unused $37,000,000,000 stimulus, plus a surplus in military funding. what really pisses me off is , if they are so concerned about the debt, let's end all Foreign Aid, no more money educating and supplying healthcare to illegals, wage and hiring freezes on all government jobs. let's place the priority on US citizens until this screwed up economy turns around….. than vote out all the traitors that are stabbing us in our backs!!

Yes, it'll pass but the problem with “when” is that if it's going to be after they get back from their extended 4th of July vacations thousands upon thousands of people will be evicted or have necessities such as power and water already cut off. I haven't received a check in 3 weeks and I was on the 2nd tier. My landlord will not wait around for his money until mid-July. It's just incredible the way these rich a$$holes are playing political games with this and paying no attention at all to the human equation. All the “no” voters need to suffer in the extreme financially, I mean just lose damn near everything, then receive no help whatsoever from anybody, much less their elected peers in the government. Then it'd be “welcome back to planet earth, you holier than thou motherf*ckers!”. I'm just disgusted and I truly wish VERY bad things on all of them. Every single one that votes no, or calls us lazy, or dug addicts, or too uppity to work for a lesser wage. F*ck. You. All! Y'all have no idea, and I hope it rains on the 4th and you all drown looking down your noses at the “little people” you shunned…

It doesn't matter. Since so many such as the Tier V are not included, this is not even a band aid to stop the Great Depression now under way. In 6 months or less, will there be much of a difference? In fact, things will be worse and the country will be all the more behind the eight ball. Then what? Little jobs or industry will still be lacking to provide growth in jobs and commerce to get us out of desperation.

I have been a recruiter for 15 years… I lost my job in June of 2009 and have not been able to find one since. Who needs a recruiter when nobody is hiring? That's my problem.

Why did the big shots on Wall Street get billions in bail out money from the Gov't and the ability to hold onto jobs that pay millions when you look at the bonus money they get…. and I can't get an unemployment check?

I am a casualty of Wall Street Greed, like many others. Did I ask to be at home right now typing this? HELL NO !!!! I have been in the working world for 23 years and never drawn assistance of any sort… but now that I really need it… when there is nothing I can do about my situation other that keep trying…. I get Shat on by the high and mighty in Congress.

I have lost my car, my dignity, the ability to do anything at all for my children and I am on the verge of loosing my home. What a price to pay for doing nothing but the best I could all these years….

accumulated this large deficit for over a period of ths last ten years….We
are quick to borrow money from China and assist other global countries
financially, but when it come to our own citizens they object everything the
democrats propose..Weeks I have read how the republicans and some democratics have let it be known that no matter how many times the bill
is revised they were gonna be in opposition of it….Now lets talk about how the Republican Bush administration failed the economy for over a period of eight years….But all the Republican congressional parties still got votes for the majority of bills bought to congress during his term….Wall street was saved by our vote….Time for change America, what about the low and middle class citizens.

How we can get such heartless people to represent us is something else. Right now my heart is aching so much. As of tomorrow I don't know what happens. My son is too young- 6 years to be in this situation- no foood, no bus pass, etc.

Working Americans pay in to this unemployment fund for 30 yrs and when they lose there jobs all they have is 6 months of benifits……….what a bunch of c..p! I think that the money ought to be put in your own seperate account! Then people could draw there own money out, instead of having to wait on our stupid ass Senators!! Now I hear they may have 59 votes and are going to be one short, because of Senator Byrds death! Come on man he already voted in favor…….his vote should be upheld! I hope everyone remembers this in November!!!

I am in Georgia as well and I received my 26 weeks, but NO extensions. I sent an email to Chambliss, Isakson, and Linder yesterday telling them that not only have they lost my support, but so has the Republican party….and no I will not vote Democratic either….time to throw both parties out! They bail out financial institutions, car companies, support illegal immigration, fund 2 wars and help rebuild those countries on our dime, let Obamacare go through, look to pass a bank bill using taxpayer's $$, send money to any other country in need at any time, BUT will not help Americans when they need it most. Then they insult us by calling us “drug addicts” and “lazy”. Without Americans spending on even the most basic of needs, this economy will never recover. Since when does a jobless recovery make sense? These people not only disappoint me they enrage me!

They were all born with silver spoons in their mouths. They have never had to actually work for damn thing. They don't know what you and me are going through. They make sure they never will. They don't care about us. They care about the big companies staying afloat to make sure THEY have money coming in. They want to make sure they secure their hundred thousand dollar a year salaries. This fourth of July isn't really independence day anymore. Its just another day for the government to go and eat alot in their lavish houses while many American's go hungry some in the street.

More money being spent outside the country and they worrry about helping our own!

Obama for offshore drilling in Brazil
This is a perfect example why many refrain from watching the news on ABC, NBC, CBS, or MSNBC.
Today on a segment of the “Glen Beck Show” on FOX (Fox Cable News) was the following:
“Today, even though President Obama is against off shore drilling for our country, he signed an executive order to
loan 2 Billion of our taxpayers dollars to a Brazilian Oil Exploration Company (which is the 8th largest company in
the entire world) to drill for oil off the coast of Brazil ! The oil that comes from this operation is for the sole
purpose and use of China and NOT THE USA ! Now here's the real clincher…the Chinese government is under
contract to purchase all the oil that this oil field will produce, which is hundreds of millions of barrels of oil”..
We have absolutely no gain from this transaction whatsoever!
Wait, it gets more interesting.
Guess who is the largest individual stockholder of this Brazilian Oil Company and who would benefit most from
this? It is American BILLIONAIRE, George Soros, who was one of President Obama's most generous financial supporter
during his campaign
If you are able to connect the dots and follow the money, you are probably as upset as I am. Not a word of this
transaction was broadcast on any of the other news networks!
Forward this factual e-mail to others who care about this country and where it is going. Also, let all of your
Government representatives know how you feel about this.

Below is the Wall street Journal article to confirm this.

Just pass the damn extension and start looking for ways to pay it back. Wait I have one, increase the taxes on american companies who manufacture their products in foriegn countries. Tariffs, buying american will increase tax revenue. Huge tax breaks for companies that pack up and move manufacturing back to America inturn increasing more tax revenue by having more employed americans. So what if you disappoint a foriegn country or two, grow some balls and start representing like you were elected to do. anyone agree or disagree please reply

With all due respect to the dead man, Senator Byrd did not vote at all for the unemployment extension last Thursday, June 24th. I called his office and they had no explanation as to why he did not vote, nor could they tell me is he was even present. Certainly it is sad for his family and friends that he has passed on, but he should have been retired back to WV decades ago. If has been years since he has been effective, other than to claim longest sitting Senator.

I agree 100% that companies that got super tax breaks to leave this country and set up shop in some other country, should be taxed. It is not fair that they are in some other country becoming rich on cheap labor ,and selling there products here, while many Americans suffer. I am 49 years old , and have tried to find employment in any kind of job, but nothing is available, I am so tired of hearing we are sorry, or that you are over qualified. Now I hear that they are trying to raise retirement to 70 years of age. What else is next?

I live in Long Beach, Ca. I am in desperate need of this extension Bill to pass. I have been unemployed now since Nov. 29, 2009. I have been in the workforce for the past 20+ years. I have had extensive experience in Managing warehouse and so what. To no avail, I have been turned away. The market is fierce and I have now run out of my benefits. I have been HIV+ for 16 years and my health has been strong due to having a job and security with no stress. Now, I do not know what to do. I do not know what I am going to tell the landlord when he asks for the rent money. I barely eat just so I can make the food last. I only use the car to either go to interviews (If I am called). I am 47 years old and went to the EDD office to enroll in workshops and found myself crying when speaking to the specialist there. 47 years old and crying. Where is your HEART? HELP ME and HELP others. PLEASE !!!

WTF? They think they can pass a homebuyer tax credit portion of the bill under unanimous consent today, But they have to buttheads over a extended Unemployment… This is unfreakinbelieveable!! million an a half people have no money or about to lose there money an no one wants to do the right thing to help them, but they can pass all kinds of damn crap that they don't need to worry about right now… if they want money to pay for this unemployment extention then they need to recoupe all that G W BUSH money that he gave to his friends at AIG remember that 1 trillion or so dollars that was spend on bonuses an trips ? instead of paying there bills… If I was president I would tell the senate an house NO ONE get's paid til you figure out what your doing about the millions not getting paid cause you want to bicker about extending unemployment…

God bless you, Alex.

I'm pretty sure that some type of unemployment extension bill is going to pass, and if not today, then probably next week.

I know that Congress is debating this issue as I type, and I'm surprised that our congressmen have been working on this issue so diligently.

I say either they should help us all if even it is a temporary thing for maybe an additional 13 weeks or say screw the whole thing … Because those who join the 99'ers are going to lose later if not right now….

Ok all– retired from USN served all over the world and yet come home to work anywhere from 10-20 other jobs to fill in the gap of transfers that come from spouse being active duty to support and defend…… After that another 10-15 jobs part time to get into the civilian life only to make it as far as UNEMPLOYED and still needing a job. I am one of those who stood in yet another line of people to continue with unemployment only to come to today with the fact that I AM STILL UNEMPLOYED. I am saddened that for all that I have contributed throughout all these years, that my status is the same as everyone else who has worked dozens of years and remain asking for help. Mind you I agree with the notion of proposing a different strategy to pay for the bill, however, let THAT be the subject of controversy AFTER you pass the bill. Isn't that what you get paid for???? Better yet who was supposed to watch those figures long before they made it to US (U.S.) needing it???

Senator Harken from Iowa just gave a great speech…and he asked how in the world can all of the high paid members of congress go home and enjoy their holiday, knowing that before they get back, there will be 2 million of us unemployed, and not able to enjoy a holiday that is supposed to celebrate how great this nation is…and just how great will we see this nation if they leave us out in the cold. he asked that before they leave for any holiday, that they remember US, the people who put them in office.

I'm a conservative republican, and i know that BOTH parties are using this issue for political gain…but finally someone that at least SOUNDED like they care about us. The ONE speech i've heard over the past couple weeks that i like, and it was from DEMOCRATIC senator Tom Harken from Iowa.

Had they all worked this hard last week or the week before, we would have our benefits…but now the 60th vote has passed away yesterday…so they must work even harder for US.

Start from the bottom, when I have worked from the day I turned 16, for 17 yrs straight. I can't believe how dumb she is. People with children can't afford to work a minimum wage job! Senator Reid will need to wait to ensure that he has the 60 votes. This of course will not help the people who have been cut off however it is in the best interest of the senator to have a complete victory and not take the chance of losing otherwise their will be no recourse for passage of the bill.

The passing of this bill will also aide the democrats come November. It is beginning to look like the republicans are willing to make their line in the sand at any cost and with the possibility of filirbusting finance regulation they are giving plenty of amo for the democrats to run on.

The economy is in a very fragile state and many republicans might be wishing for the abyss however I just don't see how it will help them. With the loonie tea baggers like Angle the republicans may want to move a little more back to center than stagefright right.

Its hard to believe that the people of Nevada voted for Angle for she is sure to lose the election by a landslide. The media has been exposing her lunacy and without question it is beginning to take its toll on the republican party.

In the end it will be in the best interest of all the unemployed and the democratic party if they wait for Senator Byrd's successor. Then and only then can they secure a victory for all Americans for the face of unemployment has no party affiliation and I truly believe that the republicans have grossly miscalculated how they will be perceived in November.

Empathy goes a long way to winning votes and I would have to believe that many of the right wing tea baggers are fracturing the republican party. Angle is the best present that the dems could have ver wished for.

Funny isn't how the right wing media have distanced themselves fom the tea bagger loons. BTW Sean Hannity has lost a great deal of credibility. Funding such a small portion of his concerts to charity was politically motivated. Amazing how unemployment is never discussed on FOX News. Too bad they couldnt get Rupert Murdoch to concede that we should take care of the unemployed. Funny how he has already embarrassed his own group of TV personalities in supporting amnesty for the illegals that are already here.

Vote will pass. We all just need to hang in there a bit longer. Senator Reid will not let this bill die for he recognizes that the financial regulations bill and unemployment bill as well as home buyers tax credit extension are all wins for the middle class and the republicans will not be able to run on the repeal of health care as Jobs are priority one and the middle class already have low taxes and believe you me they will be wanting their pound of flesh from the rich fat cats and they will get in November.

I do believe that the tide has been turned and that republicans are in for a big surprise and to say that they didn't see it coming will be their own doing. Paul, Brown and Angle are three very good reasons why republicans are starting to sweat.

Last I checked the rich make up a very small part of the electorate and they are more likely to be challenged lose for

We can't start over because we are all “drug addicts” and “lazy” (read facetiously).
Good comments, btw. What Angle is saying then is that there are no more corporate jobs for Americans because all of those jobs have been outsourced to other countries. America becomes a “service-oriented” country just like they planned only Americans will not be offered those jobs and because they have no income will be unable to obtain or enjoy those services.
Our future is so bright we have to wear shades….IF only we could afford them!

oh.. I agree whole heartedly, it would be just terrible if someone that is at the end of their rope, and feels like there is no hope was to take out their anger and fustration out on a member of the republican party or the lone democrat, Ben Nelson that also voted no, on this crucial Bill..that many need in order to provide the basic nessesities for their families…I pray for them all, we all know that there are some unstable people out there, and with the added stress of not knowing how to cope, with losing everything they have worked their entire lives for, could very well push some over the edge, I reiterate it, it would be terrible if this were to happen, but like “pissedoff” said there are desperate people out there, and thanks to the “NO” votes the numbers are riseing at a alarming rate

Sharon Angle-You are a JACKASS!!!!! I AM or WAS starting my career over. I enrolled in school to learn a new skill. I have invested several HUNDRED hours study to maintain a high GPA. I am not sitting on my ass or buying drugs with my unemployment. I am 2/3 way finished but will most likely have to quit to look for a job that isn't there anyway. I am doing everything right and still getting screwed. I hope you get the shits from your July potatoe salad!!!!!!!!

I am from CA and my initial 26 Week claim has just run out. I went to see how I apply for my extension On the EDD site and found out that there is not one available for me. I have worked for the last 25 years and served in the military and now I find my government has dropped the ball. I don't understand that because I was laid off after a certain date that I do not get an opportunity to file for at least one extension. It only seems like common sense that if people have needed up to 4 extension to find a job that most people would require at least one. It is going to be a great holiday now that I looked at the EDD site for out this great news. Please get this issue fixed.

Disgusted
Comment posted July 6, 2010 @ 3:42 pm

I'm disgusted!
Why is it taking so long for this simple vote to pass?? We are struggling people and that isn't hard to see! It's has been 4 weeks since I applied for my 1st extention. I was told by my local unemployment office to just continue to call in as normal because I was approved but “right now the funds are in a delay status”. So, now my children and I are facing an enviction because of this.. I've been searching for a job in my state as well as others but no freaking luck as of yet.

There are people on their 4th extention and still able to collect their unemployment.. What's up with that?? I can't understand why this is so hard.

1. I agree there should be a cap on how many times a person can file for an extention so some of us won't get comfortable with this assistance and will actually look for a job.

- There maybe some people that are getting comfortable but why should those of us who were just layed off suffer like this?? What burns me up is that they are still getting the funds. Can someone say unfair??

Handle this mess all ready!! I'm just patiently waiting for the 1st riot to began..

Harry Reid is the one big obstacle to progress in American politics. His bull headed stand against anything a republican has to say is what is fueling these hard line debates, which stop the train of commitment and free flow of ideas allowing our government to operate fluidly. Harry Reid is the stubborn Mule not wanting to pull the wagon! The best thing for American politics would be for Reid to go home.RESIGN NOW! He has been on a vendetta ever since Nov. elections when the majority of American’s were praying he would be defeated. Reid, Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Frank,( many others I could list, especially Obama) are so biased against the GOP that I do not think progress can be made at any point. Reid needs to help America the most by quitting his job.
