An Unprecedented End to Extended Unemployment Benefits

By

Congress has never before let federally extended unemployment benefits drop with an unemployment rate so high: That is the takeaway from a searing new report from the National Unemployment Law Project and the Center for American Progress.

The report analyzes the historical scope of the current unemployment benefits extension, and argues for the value of the benefits for families and — especially — the many millions classified as long-term unemployed. It notes that in the past, Congress has extended benefits until the unemployment rate has dropped to 7.2 percent or lower. Economists do not project the jobless rate to fall that low until at least 2013.

House and Senate Democrats are currently mounting a push to re-up federally extended unemployment benefits for another three months or more. Republicans are proving recalcitrant, arguing they will not vote for bills that increase the deficit. Most unemployment extension bills cost around $35 billion — about one percent of the $3.6 trillion federal budget.

That’s not quite true (not that I am criticizing your opinion). The previous administration inherited a country with a proficit, only to pass it on ruined. Now they scream “deficit”, but still place the blame elsewhere…

and another thing, it is morally reprehensible for the GOBP to BLOCK the cessation of 35 billion dollars of tax-payer funded subsidies to BIGOIL while claiming they are worried about the deficit. Guess how much unemployment is for six months? 35 billion dollars. Whoa! looks like the GOP is looking a little UGLY right about now. And the millions of americans who are only some of the collateral damage of this global financial disaster WILL be able to vote even if they are homeless.

I’m sorry to hear about your wife. I know you don’t think so right now but it will get better. I believe the UI extentions will pass really soon. Your wife needs you and you need her right now. So hang in there. I am waiting for the UI extention myself and am praying that everything will work out soon for all of us in dire need right now. You are not alone. Take care.

WOW I can tell you never took a government class! It’s not outdated it was never meant to up hold all the government control!!!!

We were suppose to have very little government control do to our Founding Fathers knowing to much government control would kill this nation!!!!

Suggestion read up on your history (shakes head) no wonder everyone is concerned about our school systems we are raising mindless people that can’t read bill’s for there entirety and say ya I couldn’t support all that crap too. Besides why do we have to load bills with everything and the kitchen sink? If they would just put in the bill only things that go for unemployment maybe this would have been passed months ago instead of the political show downs!!!

I have been unemployed since January 2009. I have applied every job I know. I am 61 to old to be hired and to young to retire. I would like to find any kind of job don’t matter what it is. My profession is accounting so when I apply for other jobs besides accounting I do not get hired for lack of experience even as a waitress on restaurants because I have no experience. I am very dissapointed I am raising 2 grandchildren and had to borrow money from the bank. My worries is how do I pay back the money I owe? I worked all my life why is the government letting us down. I was always proud to be an American and always confident that we would be taken care off. Where is all the money that we worked all our life for our future?

That money wasn’t paid back. I read that 60% of the banks that received money aren’t making their payments back to the government on time. They get to default on their loans from the taxpayers, but what happens when the rest of us default-they get to own your house. Maybe we should take owndership of their possessions. It’s a huge joke.

Let it be known that the lack of jobs, and the prayers that unemployment extension is passed is not because we are lazy, or just some jersk or moroons. Like many out there, I have a masters degree, and have midway towards a second masters. I have also had jobs, until this economic went down.
Now, my son is being affected, how many other kids will have to suffer????

We need the rich – just not the selfish rich. I’ve never worked for a poor business, and I doubt you have either. Businesses make money, and they’ve paid our salaries and benefits for years. They also pay taxes, which pays for more benefits. If we start condemming rich people, we’ll never get back to work. Start condemming greedy politicians who only help the rich businesses that fund their campaigns, and that’s another story . . .

It is a shame they have to continue on with this mess. If they can fund wars, help other countries, they can take care of the people in the US out of work. I do not see how they can lay down at night and know they have kicked somebody while they are down. Unemployment is not that much and people do not realize unemployment is taxable. Why don't they stop welfare for NON-WORKING PEOPLE? Common sense things they cannot do but want to punish people that try.

The unemployment rate is at an all time high. How could they not extend this? I don't understand. People will lose their homes, they won't be able to feed their children. They think the recession is bad now, wait until 1.5 million people won't be able to look for a job because they don't have a home or a car. No one will be able to buy anything; which means businesses will not make money. They won't be able to hire, because no one will be able to buy products or services. This is not looking good for the American people.

melissa
Comment posted June 30, 2010 @ 3:23 pm

Amen, Why can't they understand that everybody. If they do not extend it, things will get worse. Unemployment is not that much money. It is just enough to get by on. People keep saying get a job. Well, where at because alot of these mom and pop stores are now owned by foreigners and they do not hire Americans they hire their own family. It is a shame they keep prolonging this. Just pass the bill and move on. Do you think unemployed people are worried about the national debt???????NO. They are just trying to survive.

The first wave of the unemployed will soon come to a point of homeless without transportation, showers, clean clothes or any ability to even apply for jobs. This will lower the number of applicants. Which will then make the unemployment level appear to be turning around. As the first wave die in the streets everything will wash out. People will start to get jobs due to the millions who will be unable to apply. Even if the homeless can apply who is going to hire the homeless? I hope those in the streets gather and start robbing, looting, and even shooting out of need as well as revenge. You only live once and if your on your way out… May as well go out with a bang!

The Late Senator Kennedy would not be happy with what has happened with congress and especially in the last few weeks . Brown of Mass. is an EMBARRASMENT to the unemployed in his state and certainly the nation. If they had known that he would have turned his back on the AMERICAN PEOPLE, WELL, I'M SURE HE WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN VOTED IN. One headliner was “The American People will be axing congress (repubs) and that couldn't be furthest from the TRUTH….THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER THE “REPUBS” AT THE VOTING BOOTHS IN NOVEMBER…..”NOW THATS THE TRUTH”

Everyone should be signing this. Congress needs to be held accountable for the their failure to create a jobs bill and a jobs market. Extending Unemployment is not the answer however it what is needed now.

http://www.change.org/petitions/view/the_99ers_… a_tier_v_added_ to_unemployment _benefits

I am not one of the unemployed however see the need for Unemployment extensions… The fact that Congress cannot find other cuts is unacceptable; they always go after what is needed the most and save their pet projects and Wall Street friends.

The Answer is to create jobs, which will take Congress placing higher taxes on any company that out sources jobs over seas, higher taxes on any funds leaving the US and higher tariffs on imports. Until then we have to pay out unemployment for the failure of our leaders.

Support unemployment here, it is one of Change.org highest all time petitions.

The Senate and House have no choice; they must pass Unemployment extensions. The question is: where is the money coming from and when they do pass it, what will it do to increase the job market? Come November 30th; will people be begging once again to move up in their extensions or will the job market rebound? After passing the extensions, there is nothing so much more dire than to help businesses create jobs. By passing UI extensions, these politicians need to know that is not a pat on the back, just a “Hail Mary” pass. Get on those employers to make sure they are doing the right thing too by hiring the experienced, unemployed worker along with young new graduates. This is NOT the time for employers to be VERY discriminatory or micro-selective. Stop punishing the unemployed and start punishing those employers who are playing games with worker's livelihoods.

This is a very sad situation no matter how you look at. Being unemployed (I have been myself since Nov. 2008) is a major hit to your finances, self esteem & general living. I have done like many others have, made telephone calls for family, friends & former co-workers/employers; sent out my Resume, etc… to date I have had no response. I have been a legal secretary in Aug. 1987 & have NEVER seen a jobless/situation like this. The UI helped while being laid off & job hunting, but it isn't the same as your bills don't change when you get laid off. I haven't had any income in 4 wks. now as I was due to be on state extended benefits, but because of the current situation, never received (& many never) the paperwork to start my weekly claim showing my job searches (I keep all my confirmations as proof). Family is what helps me survive now. I understand the worry of adding to the deficit; however, things will get worse with no extension as foreclosures become more frequent, credit card debt worsens, etc. People don't enjoy a handout, but it does help & is greatly needed!!!! Americans just want to survive on a daily basis, the unemployment are not living a cushy, luxurious life by any means, at least none that I know of & I know a lot!!!!!! What I don't understand is millionaires & billionaires pass on NO ESTATE tax their heirs when the pass & that means the heirs inherit something FREE!!!!!!!! However, if you hit the lottery you pay taxes, no way around it!!!!! Tax those who inherit & you'll have the UI PAID FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These days an every day American could run the U.S. economy, it doesn't take a genius, just some simple, old-fashioned smarts!!!!!!!!!! Best of luck to those seeking an extension!!!!!!

The problem is that our government is OUTDATED. 236 years ago with horseback and candle lit rooms, it was genius to elect someone from your
area to carry the town/county votes to a destination like state capitols or
Washington DC.
Technology (and corrupt politicians) have made our democratic system OBSOLETE! To have a true democracy, we need to CHANGE the structure of government at all levels; city, county, state, and federal. We have a postal system that touches every household 6 days a week. We have computers that can count punch card ballots by the thousands per hour. Mail proposed bills to all taxpayers and give 10 days to respond/vote.
We have internet and telecommunications systems where we can communicate around the world in seconds. WE DON'T NEED GREEDY, CORRUPT, PEOPLE IN CONGRESS INCAPABLE OF MAKING GOOD DECISIONS FOR US!
It's time for Americans to DEMAND a new structure to our democracy. Give Congressmen one vote in 300+ million like all the rest of us SHOULD have on all bills proposed for law! Let's determine to make July 4, 2010, a refreshed, new INDEPENDENCE DAY! Let's vote Congress out and take over our government again! Come on America, help me build on this concept. Looking for helpful suggestions.

I bet the illegals dependents still get their WIC and Foodstamps while our vets and other citizens worry about how they will get by. Neither party nor the liberal or conservative news stations talk about the millions of jobs that have been sent overseas so the large corporations can bring in revenue in the Billions instead of millions. Our system is corrupt and I must say that I no longer feel all that proud to be an American Citizen. In fact it is us the middle class that is the pond scum of our country. They all need to go! Once my 23 weeks runs out thats it, I am out of luck, no tier 2, 3, etc.; no $25 per week either. This is the second time they have gone on vacation without getting this bill passed! I am astonished at the carelessness that our senate displays. I have fallen behind on my rent, had my vehicle repossessed ( an older model VW jetta, nothing extravagant), haven't seen my son in 2010 because I can't afford to go see him, (no gas, money for bus ticket, etc) and I have lost 50 pounds because I can't afford to eat. My pitiful unemployment check of $149 per week after child support deductions was my only life-line. Failure to extend this bill will more then likely cost me much more then just my home, it will cost my life…

I am one of the millions of people that you have decided no longer require unemployment benefits. My Husband is/was a truck driver in the building industry. I am sure you will recall the building industry, the one that no longer exists in this country. He worked for 23 years at the same company and had hoped to retire there. He is not lazy as some of your colleagues have voiced and prays everyday for a job.

As you return to your family and friends over one of the most important holidays in Nation’s history, I hope you will pray for forgiveness. We as a country have given billions to rebuild Iran and Haiti and many, many, many other countries (all with my tax dollars), but when the citizens of this country are in need you deny us. Shame on you. I and many others like me have vowed that if we have any say in your future in politics you will also be job hunting!! May your demons haunt you forever.

oh please- your ass, the POOR big banks. they can only cause DISASTER? but not help pick of the pieces of a devasted country? also, are you aware that for decades, when the unemployment is over 7.2 percent? Extended unemployment is considered emergency spending which NO ONE demands be paid for. and yet the GOBPs of the senate will adamantly REFUSE to allow that same lifeline now. This is unheard of and inhumane. and again I say, people of MA should be heartfelt ashamed of their elected official.

AMERICA – PLEASE OFFER SUGGESTIONS to email addy below

Email helpful suggestions to:

They look out for the future of our country when it is in their best interest. Truth is they just don't want to pass the closing tax loopholes portion of the bill so they make up some jargon about the budget. They didn't seem to care so much when they were racking up the trillions of $$ of debt we have right now. As far as the stimulus funds, perhaps you people should get your facts straight, “unused” does not mean unallocated. If we spend it now then we will just have to borrow later to cover the cost of the programs the “unused” stimulus has been allocated to fund.
IMO congress is so far removed from the everyday lives of americans that they cannot even grasp what they are doing to us. Seriously, how many of you show up to work whenever you see fit and stay as long as you like (typically no more than 5 hours) and then get 7-10 days of vacation for every little holiday on the calendar? How many of you get to decide when and how much to increase your paycheck? Then @$$holes like this Orin Hatch have the nerve to talk about laziness and people sucking up $$ from our economy and wasting it on things like drugs. How many of these fat cat hypocritical tycoons do you think spend their paychecks (our tax dollars) on booze, whores and powder – enough to have a headline in a major paper at least once a month. Maybe instead of us being under the microscope we should put them under one, maybe we should start demanding to know how they spend all theirs millions of our $$$, maybe they should have to answer to the people who pay them before giving themselves a fat raise… Or maybe they just need a brutal a$$-whoopin'!

What happened to the March that was supposed to happen 6/22-24? I watched the news daily and it got no publicity and from what I read some 35,000 had signed up to march. What happened then? Americans can revolt and the wealthy military establishment will send our own relatives to squash us. Actually, that's probably what they want so they can institute martial law under the Patriot Act. We need to PEACEFULLY DEMAND by sheer numbers of votes that we want a new structure that creates a true democracy. What we have are what were supposed to be elected public servants, that once elected have decided that we arfe now their slaves. They tell us what to do, we don't tell them anymore. They do what's best for themselves and their pockets. It's time to vote every one of them out and create a new democracy. Email your suggestions to:

All I know is that I am sitting here in tears. I feel so very lost, and frustrated about how to pay bills, buy food etc.. It is not like I am spending this money on frivolous things, just the simple basics to live. Heck, some days we go without a roll of toilet paper, or make sure it will make it to the next check. We lost our checks this week, as we both went to certify and were told our benefits were exhausted. I don't know what is going to happen with my husband and I. There is no where to turn for help, it is not like we have family to ask for help. We are both older. I just pray that some of these politicians read some of these comments. I wish they could just for 24 hrs step into our shoes so to speak. And I hope that they know that KARMA is real. I feel for everyone that is on here trying to make sense of any of this, and my prayers and thoughts will be with all of you. Thank you for letting me vent.

I am currently unemployed, and my last two jobs were sent to India. One of the first things the US needs to do is stop sending jobs away just for a quick profit. If people are not working they can not stimulate the economy. If the government is going to continue to allow companies to delete our jobs for a quick profit, the least they can do for us is to extend unemployment benefits. I do vote!

According to “The Hill,” Reid is saying that he's ONE VOTE shy; and that if Byrd was still there, we'd have the 60 votes needed to pass the unemployment extension bill being discussed right now in the Senate as of 1:19 pm Wednesday.
I can only PRAY that this bill is NOT voted upon until Reid has all his DUCKS IN A ROW (that all 60 votes are COMITTED) PRIOR TO ANOTHER VOTE IN THE SENATE.
Can Reid pull this off? Can ONE MORE REPUBLICAN STEP UP FOR THE GOOD OF AMERICA? I'll tell you this, if the final one Republican steps up to make the 60 votes needed, I'll become an Republican. Or better yet, that one Republican will have one more vote to count on come election day.

I am a 61 year old woman who has worked her entire adult life. I have managed to see all my children graduate university and be productive citizens. Who do you think is going to hire me for the pay I received prior to this layoff? How do you think I will manage to pay my rent, utilities, and eat. I have no healthcare and now I have no unemployment compensation. I wonder who you think pays the salaries and health benefits for the leaders of this country. I wonder why so many people in the richest country in the world are afraid to reach out and take care of their own in a time of need. We send aid to Israel, Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan, and God knows how many other countries in the world. We only want what is rightfully ours. Money that our employers have paid into the system on our behalf for decades. I fear for where this country is heading. While you sell off our water rights and defend large corporations against the needs of the individual and take money from lobbies to fatten your own wallets, look around yourselves. People will die because of your selfish decisions. Why weren't you so concerned about our grandchildren paying for wars? Do you think it's less honorable for them to pay to aid their grandparents and parents in a time of need. You should all be ashamed of yourselves Congressmen and women. I am saddened to see what you have become.

I need my benefits too, but not at the expense of the Dem's giving everyone else more money! For crap sakes man Reid couldn't even get all his own people on board and here you are playing the blame game.

News flash the majority of Dem's house and Senate have even told Obama to quit blaming W. Bush!!

The following bible verse helps me through the days…. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. It's like the world and everybody in it is just screaming out. Hello! It's been going on. It's been going on for days and months and years and years. It's been going on for ages. Does it ever change? It has and it does, with blood to pay! Like an addict, when it hits rock bottom things are gonna change. Leaders simply are addicted to money, control, power and living their ways of life. They will continue to try to behold control. Failure will shift to change. Repeated failure will eventually bring rock bottom. This group of leaders includes much more than appear; a president and all his men, for they are only the puppets/spokespersons. Truly leading are huge corporations and those with the most wealth, who are willing to give pay offs, calling them donations, to anyone who can support their selfish causes. Fueled by their greed for more, with no true regard to anything anywhere; humanity, the planet earth, the universe and all of infinite space. Laws are written, supposedly to keep order (control). These laws are broken often by nearly all, even those who make them. The justice system, unjust, most often justified by the fact that it is the best justice system on earth. Unjust but more just than any other. Humans in general or in business claim their purpose good, yet mask true intention. Agendas are almost always lead by hidden ulterior motives in hopes they are never revealed. Moral value has declined close to the point of an almost non-existence… unless someone is watching. Dark secrets could fill oceans if they were to materialize. From the basic to the hardcore, crimes and assaults are committed as if second nature, with no remorse. More often to full-fill personal pleasures, a want, rather than a true need.

The general public doesn’t take a stand for anything unless there is a large enough self benefit. Even when it is in their face, they are just too busy, self absorbed and couldn't be bothered… unless it's something a simple cash donation could help fix. This feel-good effort will help rid any self guilt related to the cause.

Just sit back and take it. Whatever is dished out. It will be easier, to ignore it, it will take less energy, less time, and money to just let it go…

For all this there is a price to pay. As much as they try to forget, this day is coming, or is it already here? People it is time!

I have been on Unemployment for 23 weeks and mine has run out, despite having been employed at my primary job for the last 2 and a half years, while concurrently working a second job for the past year and a half. Failure to extend this bill will more then likely cost me much more then just my possessions, it will cost my life…

I just love the way that our “leaders” think. For years and years now the republicans have actually given large US corporations incentives to farm work over-seas and outsource our jobs. They have been given tax shelters, and they made sure the tarriffs (not sure of spelling) were low enough that it was well worth it to outsource. That took American jobs away. Now we are in a depression- call it what it is- with a very high unemployment rate, with no jobs to apply to and the republicans are acting like we are welfare junkies. Unemployment is not welfare- unemployment is for hard working people who lost their job due to no fault of their own- if you quit or get fired you CAN'T collect unemployment (at least not in my state) so it is not welfare you jerks!! I am as frustrated with the Democrates as the Republicans on this though. The Democrates had no problem bailing out Wall Street, the banks, and other investment companies so the CEOs could go and elaborate vacations. They had no problem ramming through a huge trillion dollar health care bill that most of us didn't even want – it is only going to make jobs even more hard to come by because now small businesses (that are barely holding on now) are going to have to give health care- if they can't afford to do it they can't hire people, and may go out of business putting more unemployed people on the streets- talk about shooting ourselves in the f'in foot!! With the health care bill they had no Republican support but mannaged to ram it through- so why can't they pass this that is actually needed? I guess getting your picture taken and getting in history books for “ground breaking” legislation is more important to Obama and Pelopsi (not sure of spelling) than actually helping struggling Americans.

Hey folks, besides all the criminals lol I mean politicians getting a kick out of playing with people's lives has anyone else noticed this… I usually watch several different news stations throughout the day, well of course more so recently due to the criminals in office cutting off the unemployment benefits.. Well I have been watching CNN, FOX, ABC, and HLN news and none and I mean none have said 1 dam thing about what these crooks are doing. No mention of how this affects people, course I would enjoy one of the journalists following one of these crooks back to their house for the Holiday weekend and get some footage of the criminal living it up while millions of Americans get to spend their Holiday worrying about rent/mortgage bill, electric, gas, and water bills…Watch how they enjoy their vacation, living it up having steak and other expensive foods, while a good portion are eating things like ramen soup..
I was let go from a company at no fault of mine, they hired cheaper labor. Been in the same line of work for 12 yrs, have a family, and instead of enjoying really anything we are always worried about paying our basic bills.. Heck, no cable here we cut it out a few months ago… So lets see… Have electic, water, phone, car insurance, rent, and groceries… No big spending, no credit cards, nothing at all extravagant..
I try applying at almost anywhere, even lower paying jobs.. Heck I even applied at pizza hut, just something to get by.. Yet to no success not even a return call..

It is unimaginable that the men and women we voted into these offices would let not hundreds, not thousands but millions left to further struggle. The unemployment we receive isn't much but it helped pay on the bills and put some food on the table. Now there is no money! No support to the working people of this supposed great nation. Let's see the politicians reach into their hefty pockets and help those in need!! I hope as they take a week off (PAID) for the fourth of july they think of us millions that have to explain to their children why their isn't much food and why they have to move because they lost their home or why the bank came and took the car back. It is ridiculous to me that they are playing with not just the money but with our lives!!

Unemployment benefits are not the same thing as public assistance or what is commonly known as welfare, which you are referring to in your comment. Those of us who have been working all of our lives and have had Unemployment Insurance payments deducted from every single paycheck we have received, in my case since I was 18, are not looking for a handout, but for supplemental funds to survive in these tough economic times. I am now 55, have worked hard to obtain a home, car and to live a decent existence and was laid off from my job almost a year ago. I have since applied to over 200 jobs. I have interviewed twice for jobs where the interviewers told me that around 300 people had applied for.

The amount of unemployment benefit that is received is far from being enough to cover any normal household expense on it's own and has been supplemented with savings and 401k funds which eventually run dry. Most of us are not even eligible for public assistance because we own property and/or have no children. I wish that people would get their facts straight and realize the difference between unemployment benefits and public assistance and stop making the assumption that unemployed individuals are resting on our laurels and waiting for the government to take care of us.

I am really starting to believe that!! There first concern should be to us! To the ones who have worked and lost our jobs. its not like our unemployment doesn't get circulated back into the economy with us paying our mortages, car payments, buying food for our families. I know people that are turning their cars in, breaking their leases. how is dragging the people along benefiting either side.

One of the first things we need to do besides voting out all of the idiot politicians is to find out what companies are sending jobs overseas and boycott them. What the politicians don't seem to understand is that we WANT TO WORK!!! We would gladly take a job if there were any out there to take. We worked hard all our lives to live a decent life and now we are losing everything we worked so hard for. Even on unemployment many of us can barely afford our expenses. In my case… rent (never managed to make enough to actually buy a home), car payment (on the used car I purchased because I couldn't afford a new one), food and utilities. That's it – just basic living expenses (my life was far from extravagant). I worked 2 jobs most of my life to raise my now 20 y/o son on my own with no help from welfare or even food stamps. Now when I need help because there are no jobs available, these idiots in Washington say no, because they seem to think we're too lazy to work. I think that come November we need to put them all on the unemployment lines.

OMG. This is a real shame. Your story will soon be all our stories. When you live in an interdependent, modern system like the one we live in where there is extensive task division (meaning everyone specializes so no one has to both hunt for their meat, farm their own vegetables, sew their own clothes, and build their own houses, but instead may work at a call center for a company that has “divisions” that handle all of these things individually and earn money which they may exchange for these things, for example), the system cannot survive unless it distributes the means of access to goods essential to sustenance fairly. I sense that our system is on the verge of collapse unless someone steps in and ends the corruption that allows a few to cheat many out of what little they have left.

Its not a Republican thing. I believe that both Dems and Rep would vote in favor of extension if it wasn't adding to deficit. The Dems want to use a credit card the Reps want them to use a checking account. In addition Dems wanted to stuff other things in the bill that would also add to deficit. Reps want the Dems to use some of the unused stimulus money. Dems refuse. I need to have this pass. I have been unemployed for over a year. But I'm not so quick to condem Reps. Plenty of blame on both sides. What is disapointing is both parties need to put their differences aside and help the american people. We are there for everyone else including GM and AIG. The money that goes to unemployment is respent in the economy right away. This will have impact on economic recovery as well if not passed shame on both parties. Hope they have a nice holiday!

we need someone to submit a real standalone bill for UI, and have UI paid for with unused stimulus funds.

the dems voted the bill on june 17 to pay UI, and all of the other ammendments, with unused stimulus money. maybe now they'll quit being so foolish.

Once again the POLITICIANS have shown their true colors. BOTH sides are equally to blame. The money has always been there for the extensions in unused stimulus funds. The Replublicans want to use it, the Democrats don’t. The Replublicans want to use the unused stimulus, so as not to add to the already out of control deficit. The Democrats don’t want to use it, because the current situation warrants emergency spending. The ironic part is why doesn’t the Republicans feel that the worst economy since The Great Depression doesn’t constitute as an emergency? And if the money is already there, why won’t the Democrats agree to use it? Regardless, where were either’s concern for the deficit when they both bailed out DELIBERATE corporate greed without a blink of the eye, yet stubbornly drag their heels (like 2 rich kids argueing over who gets the yacht club playground swing 1st) for the unemployed through no fault of their own? It's amazing. Congress can give out 800 billion to banks and other financial institutions who in turn passed out the money to top ranking officials as multi-million dollar bonuses which ran up the deficit more than 25 times what this extension will do. Pass the darn extension already. Once again Congress doesn't care about the average American only which side wins…Dem's or Repub's.

We need to unite as one and organize a protest and demand Washington give us our money. We are in tough economic times and this is our only lifeline for many! they can not pull the rug out from under us. The fact that these people even went on leave without a resolution for unemployment extension is outrageous! according to everything I have read, they only need 3 more votes. WE have to take a stand.

I would love to organize some sort of peaceful demonstration in Washington. I have never done anything like this before but it has to be done. If the immigrants can protest so can we.

I was thinking of contacting the press in Washington and telling them my idea to form a protest.. And maybe they could post on their websites soliciting supporters for our cause. I think we should protest for one day. Let's face it, we are all living on borrowed time right now and can't afford to stay in Washington indefinetly.

If we can get enough people together and proper media coverage we can pull this off. Maybe the local media could even arrange to make sure we get food, water and have access to bathrooms during the protests.

What have we got to lose! we have to stand up for ourselves because no one is gives a damn. Posting comments here does absoutely nothing. We must go to Washington. If you are intested, please contact me @ tia_thorne@yahoo.com

Folks, it takes money to beat the other candidate. You don't see any poor candidate swing the election do you? They whore themselves out for the money. Now instead of repaying the “loan” with sex they repay it by voting in the interests of the “John” (the campaign fund contributor) and they are “owned” by “the john” and although it is not sex that they are repaying with they have to “bend” and get into the “position” that “the john” demands!

This is ridiculous they act like individuals whom are on unemployment dont want to work. I want to work but cant find a job as this is the case with many others so what are we suppose to do in the mean time. I dont see how we send money all over the world to help everyone when we cant even start to help at our own front door. Unemployment extention is the only lifeline some of us have until we can get back on our feet. I feel like I have worked and paid enough dues and taxes for me to have extentions to my benefits. I'm not asking them to keep me on my benefits forever but my benefits are the difference between me minimally surviving versus people being on the streets and having to do other things to survive. I have college degrees ( PLURAL) and cant find work so how the hell do they expect someone with just minimal education to find work in this economy. These politicians dont care cause they will get their money so to hell with the rest of us. They have already used us to get in the offices they are in so they dont really care. Something needs to be done ASAP. Just my opinion.

I too am unemployed and have been since 2 weeks after Obama took office. I lost my family, my job, my home and every single thing I worked my entire life for. I now (and have been for 1 1/2 years) in a trailer with the family dog who was also deserted. I'm a degreed engineer with an MBA who can't even find a job parking cars. I've lost my unemployment and have no food. I figure the dog will last me about a week or two in food if I can catch her – she seems to understand and is keeping her distance – this is no joke.

Let's put Congress on unemployment and tell them to go get a job in their field. I say in their field, because they obviously sent a lot of jobs oversees and never blinked an eye. They don't care unless it hits them personally.

Oh and maybe we could apply for their jobs and you know what else, we could do the job for a lot less and reduce the budget and deficit that way.

What do ya say?

Try to explain this situation to your employed friends. They don't have a clue what you are talking about. All of us know and know what's in store for us.These blogs are good but other than us who reads them, no one . This awlful situation in DC is rarely even on the evening news. It is up to us to get the word out about what the republicans are doing and the impact that it will have. The nerve of this mealy mouthed, back stepping Sharron Angle women to call us spoiled. I've worked longer than most of these jerks controlling our lives only to come up short of retirement. I will have to take a minimum wage job or two to pay my taxes. I think we all know who is spoiled and they work in DC.

Obama can not do anything more if the SENATE votes against a bill. Did you not learn the system of checks and balances in grade school?

This is a serious issue. We, the unemployed Americans are extremely concerned about it. But, what can we do excepting signing petitions and creating polls. However, petitions and polls are useful ways of expressing our views. Recently, I have signed a petition on aafter.com. If you are also interested then go to the site and type petition: in the search box and press enter to convey your opinion.

This is my request to the Government, please do something for us.

We give food stamps, free medical care to all the illegals, but we can't take care of hard working people who have paid taxes all of their lives and who now need some assistnace to keep their familes together. I have worked for 37 years and put into this messed up system and for what?? When I go to retire there will be no Social Security Left.. I pay into unemployment insurance and that gets screwed up.. In the meantime Nancy Pelosi needs a bigger office for a mere 17,000 per month.. they build a tunnel for turtles and they can't seem to pass an UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION!!! I can't believe these Senators are that dumb. Those on unemployment will just shift to welfare and Medicaid at a cost that will far exceed that 30 billion. And getting off welfare is harder than getting off unemployment.

I am a licensed professional engineer with two masters degrees yet still cannot find a job in a year and half. People who have been laid off in this recession are hard working and capable people who sincerely want to work but cannot find a job. Through their hardwork they have paid for the unemployment insurance and they rightfully deserve to be paid at the time of their need. The senators who are voting against it are voting against the right of the unemployed and that is wrong. They have time to play politics because they have food on their tables.

What the Senate Republicans did by not approving the bare bones Unemployment Extension, is unconsciable. The Federal Deficit can always be repaid later – paying it off longer term is doable as in many other countries. But stranding the Unemployed will lead us to a Depression which is 100 times more damaging than a deficit. Please call your states Republican Senators and Congress men/women to protest and encourage them to vore 'Yes' to pass the bill!!!

I am so not understanding the thoughts going on with our politicians, the general public, and the media. The Republicans seem just plain evil. All the places that spending could have been cut all these years and they decide to start with a struggling, hard working middle class. And saying they'll agree if it comes from the stimulus money when it would just deplete any money for job creation which might eliminate some of the need for unemployment. I remember when my parents and grandparents wouldn't vote for republicans because of how they behaved during the depression. WOW!! Can history be repeating themselves. And why isn't the media making a bigger deal of this? Doesn't anyone realize the consequences of this?

You're a tool. i went from making $80K/year to $362.00 a week…and they have the nerve to take child support out of that for my son's dad who just up and quit his job so he could collect child support. I'm in the process of starting my own business yet I did rely on that pitiful bi-weekly sum I WORKED HARD TO GET. With no warning whatsoever, congress decides to yank that away from me. So unless you are hanging out high-end sales jobs yourself, you should stay in your house and keep your yap shut so you don't get jacked by some crazy “left-wingers” like me. You probably spit on homeless people too–yet beat the Bible to death. Jesus gave everything he had to the poor…and even though I'm struggling myself, I help those who are less fortunate. I lost my job because my boyfriend turned down a blow-job from his supervisor so she got rid of the competition–me. Gets you all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it. So responsibility has nothing to do with it. You just sound full of hate. Keep it to yourself or muse about it within your friendly circle of hate.

How about we get rid of the 12 to 20 million people that are brakeing the law
by entering our USA . Because they are here and eating and sending any money out of the USA and not spending it here in the USA
The Department of Homeland Security reported that illegal immigrant population was about 10.8 million in 2009 compared to 11.6 million in 2008.

$11 billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to illegal aliens each year by state governments.
Illegal households only pay about one-third the amount of federal taxes that non-illegal households pay.
Illegal households create a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion a year. If given amnesty, this number could grow to more than $29 billion.
$1.9 billion dollars a year is spent on food-assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC and free school lunches for illegal aliens.
$1.6 billion is spent on the federal prison and court system for illegal aliens.
$2.5 billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens.
About 21 percent of the population of U.S. prisons is classified as “noncitizens” from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. About 5 percent is listed as “unknown.”

And they will not extend benifits for the long term unemployed. People born here in USA and there parents and Grandparents born here.

I am a 99er, college educated, applied for fast food jobs; told if I can’t speak Spanish they can’t help me as cooks and most workers don’t speak English! Other jobs, I am over qualified. Now after many years of working, a military family of three generations, headed to living in car with three children. Tell me, Congress, with your $1,000 suits why 99ers do not need extension? My family helped defend this nation, why can’t you help your citizens instead of illegals and other countries?

After all the storms we just had and many poeple dying in our counrty, where were the other countries in the world to send money and medical supplys to us ,No, not one other country. Just remember that America! No one ever seems to help us.Thats why we are broke.
