Grassley: Unemployment Extension Will Pass If Dems Can Pay for It
Monday, June 28, 2010 at 1:13 pm
The jobs bill, which includes an extension to unemployment benefits among other provisions, could be passed if Democrats would be willing to pay for it with stimulus money and offset other spending, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said in an interview with TWI sister site The Iowa Independent.
Last week the bill failed to garner the 60 votes necessary in the Senate to overcome a filibuster.
Even though Democrats repeatedly cut the bill in an effort to win Republican backing, the latest version would have added $55 billion to the nation’s $1.4 trillion deficit over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Grassley said he’s heard from his constituents that they are tired of the government running up huge debt, and that the message is starting to get through to Democrats as well.
“It wasn’t just Republicans who voted against the bill in the U.S. House,” he said. “There were plenty of Blue Dog Democrats who don’t agree with this type of spending either.”
He added that in February, he and Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) put forth a bill that would have extended unemployment benefits and other important items in the jobs bill, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) killed the measure.
“It was paid for,” Grassley said. “We could have passed that in three days instead of wasting three weeks.”
Reid said at the time that the Baucus-Grassley bill wouldn’t do enough to show voters that the Senate was serious about addressing the unemployment problem, focusing too much on tax cuts and not enough on job creation. Critics also pointed out that extensions of both unemployment and COBRA benefits would have run only three months in Grassley’s legislation.

The Republicans would rather have the American unemployed lose their extension benifits. I'll bet if those in Congress lost their jobs and had to rely on unemployment to make their mortgage payments, utility payment and provode food for their families it would be a different story. Doesn't the Republican party realize what the are going to creat. How many millions of people will lose their houses, the vehicles. Where will they live with no income? Can the Republicans in congress live on minimum wage/ They seem to think that the rest of America can. Don't they realize that people will turn to crime to feed theri families. If those stubborn Republicans..would put their differences with President Obama behind them and do the right thing for the American public that voted for them they could avoid another American civil war. Maybe this is their plan for their New World Order…Its sad that this is the 21st cntury and that most Republicans are racists..although none of them will admit it..

[...] Let’s take a look at the GOP’s (and one DINO’s) reasons for blocking an extension of unemployment benefits for over 1 million Americans. Chuck Grassley reiterates that the GOP would be fine with extending jobless benefits, as long as they are paid for with already appropriated stimulus funds. [...]

We need to be heard. We need help during this depression that we are in. We are not too lazy to get up and go job searching, some of us have turned in job applications every day that we have been unemployed, and still we get called lazy. Thats slander. Also, some of us need this emergency money so that we can buy medication to literally survive (live)

You are correct, many people submit resumes and applications day-after-day, but never even get a call for an interview. Now, it's being reported that employers do not, and will not, hire the unemployed because they are considered slackers. Currently you have to have a job to get a job. If you are unemployed you are doomed.

I wish congress could feel how it is when you have to sell everything in your garage to buy food. It's been a month since I have for paid and now I can't even pay my house payment. I'm glad they can afford to take there time on this issue when we the people are the ones suffering. So go ahead and take your 2 week recess and I will just lose more faith in our country

“There but by the grace of God go I”- I never expected to be 53 years old and out of work- I've worked my whole life. I didn't think that I was old until I started looking for a job again-employers want young employees- it's so hard and I'm so discouraged. I still might lose my house- the little bit of unemployment that I was receiving barely kept our heads above water- now I don't know what I am going to do!

I can feel the pain… I just wished the folks in congress would trade places with me for one week.. that is all it would take and their lives would either change or they would help all of us on the unemployment line!!!!!!!
