Memo to Jeb Bush: Obama Is Still Cleaning Up After Your Brother

Jeb Bush isn’t terribly happy with President Obama’s willingness to blame his brother George for his administration’s challenges:

For months now, Jeb Bush has been listening as President Obama blasts his older brother’s administration for the battered economy, budget deficits and even the lax oversight of oil wells.

“It’s kind of like a kid coming to school saying, ‘The dog ate my homework,’ ” Mr. Bush, this state’s former governor, said over lunch last week at the Biltmore Hotel. “It’s childish. This is what children do until they mature. They don’t accept responsibility.”

In fact, instead of constantly bashing the 43rd president, Mr. Bush offered, perhaps Mr. Obama could learn something from him, especially when it comes to ignoring the Washington chatter. “This would break his heart, to get advice that applies some of the lessons of leadership my brother learned, because he apparently likes to act like he’s still campaigning, and he likes to blame George’s administration for everything,” Mr. Bush said, dangling a ketchup-soaked French fry. “But he really seems like he’s getting caught up in what people are writing about him.

I  really don’t see why President Obama should have to “accept responsibility” for conditions that he inherited from the previous administration. Jeb Bush may have forgotten, but Iraq and Afghanistan are his brother’s wars, and the financial crisis, recession and deficit are all consequences of his brother’s presidency.

For my part, I would encourage President Obama to ramp up his criticism of Bush, as it’s simply a fact that Bush’s presidency was ripe with shortcomings and missed opportunities. From health care to climate change to infrastructure, the Bush administration and its congressional allies left plenty of work to be done. Between the stimulus package, financial reform, health care reform and climate change, Obama and congressional Democrats are trying as much as possible to clean up after Bush. And given that, it’s not at all unreasonable or “childish” for Obama to point it out on occasion.

Great article! And dead-on the mark.

Someone should tell Jeb his brother was polled as the “Worse President in American History”. Maybe that's why he works so hard to change his legacy. It's too late, Dubya, your legacy is established for all time.

I laud President Obama for having inherited not only an economy on the brink of depression and moving us from it, no thanks to the Republican minority, but keeping his cool when most of the rest of us would have lost it. He also has the race thing to contend with. Bigotry and prejudice are hard to contend with, when it's thrust in your face under the guise of “political sentiment”, or “popular concensus” (total BS).

So Jeb, LIVE WITH IT! Your brother OWNS his legacy!

“It’s childish. This is what children do until they mature. They don’t accept responsibility.”

Wow. That's just a breathtakingly impressive level of duplicity. I wonder if Jeb would prefer investigations and prosecution for his brothers many crimes?

And, Matt Bai is a certified hack for giving someone as congenitally corrupt as Jeb Bush the space in the Times to defend his war criminal sibling.

Stunning how deep your head is buried in the past to not realize the present…and America's sinking future. Domestic policy, foreign policy, our generals and allies on the battlefield not getting support, our Gulf Coast polluted by the planet's “healer”, the best healthcare system in the world replaced, a border left open for anyone to penetrate, and a President worried about what was instead of what must be.

The only hope the USA and the world as we know it have is to return to capitalism, individualism, and a representative government reflective of the American People. OBAMA is not that…and whatever anyone says about a Bush, our country could not be in worse shape relative to that we were founded to be…so go ahead Jeb; you've got my vote in '12.

The gulf coast was polluted by your 'capitalism' and deregulation, the health care system is EXACTLY THE SAME, except now you have to buy insurance from the insurance companies ( if you can't afford then the government helps you pay through subsidies), and the border is actually seeing decreased illegal immigration.

The USA never left capitalism, individualism isn't quantitative, and our government was elected by the majority so it is representative and reflective. Bush wasn't even elected, the supreme court elected him.

The person you responded to shows as a prime example of the intellectual disconnect. Jeb Bush is another. Blame anybody except those responsible to the charges.
“They don't accept responsibility”. He said it, but just can't see the hypocrisy.

I'm really sick of the whole “best health care in the world” lie. Hello, McFly? We were rated 37th! Considering other factors, that just sucks. No way around it. And the health care that got passed was gutted by party politics.

I am usually a “shut up and fix it” kinda guy in my everyday life… but I am really sick of all the problems Obama inherited being referred to as “Obama's this” and “Obama's that” while the GOP agenda is clearly to stall until Nov. in hopes of winning enough seats to stall even more effectively.

Lincoln's party, the party of Honest Abe, is now the party of lie, deceive and exaggerate. It's sickening.

How quickly they forget what they did! The right has long screwed over those who have less and created a larger inequality in wealth than this country has seen since before the great depression. The right keeps blaming the democrats for “destroying the middle class” but the responsibility lies with those who are more friendly to the big corporation than they are to the “little people”. I have always wondered why those who lose more under republican administrations and/or congresses can vote republican. Kind of like the old nose and face thing, isn't it?

Ok…so using your own words:

“The USA never left capitalism” but “the government helps you pay through subsidies”…please explain how the government helps someone pay for a product beyond their means. And while you’re at it please tell me how we our country got into this economic mess if not by the gov’t enabling people to live beyond their means.

WAKE UP…your homework assignment tonight is to look up the term “gerrymandering” and its place in a “representative and reflective” gov’t.
