White House: Americans to Blame for Our Drug Problems
Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 10:01 am
With all the talk of drug violence on the Mexican border “spilling over” into the United States, the Obama administration today points out something that few other policymakers have been willing to say out loud: Those problems wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the tremendous appetite that Americans have for those drugs.
“The number-one cause of the drug problem in the United States is our enormous demand for drugs,” the White House wrote in its National Drug Control Strategy, issued today. “We must continue multinational, collaborative efforts to reduce the international production and trafficking of drugs, but we must simultaneously address our Nation’s appetite for drugs.”
The administration also uses the new document, written by drug czar Gil Kerlikowske, to reiterate its longstanding opposition to drug legalization.
“Keeping drugs illegal reduces their availability and lessens willingness to use them,” the document reads. “That is why this Administration firmly opposes the legalization of marijuana or any other illicit drug. Legalizing drugs would increase accessibility and encourage promotion and acceptance of use.”
The message is especially relevant to Californians, who will go to the polls this November to decide if marijuana should be legalized.

Welp here we go. Another monumental waste of money. The USA runs around the world with its high handed agenda doing whatever it wants with no respect for individuals or ethnic groups of people, or governmental soverenty. Americans like their drugs and the simple fact is that people rarely do what their told, but they will do what they want. Marijuana is the safest inebriant known to man, but is it safer to push people to alcohol,, booze is toxic, pills are toxic, hell half the american environment is toxic..cannabis could save the world… food, fibre, oil, medicine, spirituality. I, for one, will never stop smokin pot as it is safer than big pharma and booze. and i can grow it for free. and it allows me to commune with my God more easily. not to mention the delishious seeds to eat… FREE THE WEED !!!

The decision by the people of this country concerning legalization of the marijuana medicinal plant that has been used by humans for thousands of years is based in choosing between two opinions. The first one, articulated by the “father” of marijuana prohibition in the 1930-s and the second one by Dr Grinspoon, one of the leading contemporary experts in this country. These are the the direct quotes from the prohibitionist Harry Anslinger pushing the “Marijuana Tax Act” of 1937: “There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.” “…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.” “Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.” “Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.” “Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing” “You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.” “Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.” And this is what Dr. Grinspoon said in 2006 about Cannabis Sativa medicinal Plant: “Cannabis will one day be seen as a wonder drug, as was penicillin in the 1940s. Like penicillin, herbal marijuana is remarkably nontoxic, has a wide range of therapeutic applications and would be quite inexpensive if it were legal”. Dr. Lester Grinspoon, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Los Angeles Times, May 5, 2006. These are two opinions the citizens around the country will be asked to compare and to choose from. I do not believe that the choice is an exceedingly difficult one. What I believe is that the fear-tactics must be rejected once and for all, and at least MEDICAL marijuana should be legalized in all 50 States ASAP.

I have seen the destruction of people through the abuse of marijuana, but it also can be used safely by others for medicinal purposes, and the variety grown in Europe for fiber usage is non-intoxicating. Legalization across the board for the medicinal use of cannabis is important, and like pills it will not stop its abuse, but for those in need of its benefits, it is important. The legalization of industrial marijuana (hemp) would provide us with another form of renewable product for clothing, rope, and other industrial uses. In Europe they use if for building, in fact.
The fact that the White House which sold us out to the pharmaceutical industry in their miserable health care plan have come out with a report blaming Americans for the drug problem is not surprising. The only complain is that the pharmaceutical industry cannot control marijuana, so it must the citizens who are the problem. I do not smoke pot, nor would I ever. The very smell of it makes me retch, and I have seen to many friends get so addicted to the high (no it is not physically addictive, but it can be emotionally addictive for some people) and slowly waste away their lives, to want to follow that path. I do, however, recognize that not everyone agrees with me, and I do recognize the medical necessity of marijuana and its benefits for many people. You will continue to see this kind of attitude from the government until the pharmaceutical firms along with Monsanto can create a genetic mutation that they can patent. Then just watch how the government changes its opinion. Just wait for your Franken-marijuana.

“Keeping drugs illegal reduces their availability and lessens willingness to use them…”
Yep, and expecting different results from the same decades old actions should work out fine this time…
This is complete nonsense. The 'drug violence on the Mexican border “spilling over” into the United States' is caused not by the drugs themselves, nor even their use, but by the fact they are illegal. We don't see any corollary violence associated with the trafficking of alcohol that we see with illegal drugs because it is no longer subject to prohibition.

I don't even smoke marijuana but it's obvious to me that it's no where near the problem drug that alcohol is. The ONLY issue with marijuana is that it is illegal, if peoples lives didn't get ruined by the GOV over it, I don't think it would be a big deal. Yes, people like to get altered, apparently it's a natural thing. If people get addicted, get them medical/psychological treatment. At this rate we'll all be working just to keep the other half of the population in prison for non-violent activities. For basically a private thing.

“Keeping drugs illegal reduces their availability and lessens willingness to use them,” I think any 12th grader would disagree. 75% of 12th graders can get pot within 1 hour. Legalize and regulate, like alcohol. Keep marijuana out of the hands of children.

We have to take right step to stop Drug abuse. There are so many Drugs that are used for addiction.Valium is one of them.Valium is the brand name for a drug called diazepam. Valium is a type
of medicine called a benzodiazepine, which enhances the effects of a
neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. The
more GABA in the synopses of nerve cells, the less active the brain,
which is why Valium is mainly used as a sedative or tranquilizer.
Valium (diazepam) is also considered a hypnotic, anti-epileptic, and
anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) drug which affects the central nervous system
as a general depressant.
A Valium addiction may be treated with detoxification and drug rehab. A competent, professional rehab facility can provide addicts with the tools they need to overcome their addiction to Valium.
