Temporary Unemployment Extension Is Law
Friday, April 16, 2010 at 10:38 am
In a swift train of events, the Senate last night passed a short-term extension of emergency unemployment benefits, which the House approved a few hours later and President Obama signed into law shortly afterward. “In these tough economic times,” Obama said, ”it is more critical than ever to bring relief to Americans who are working every day to find a job, and families that are struggling to make ends meet.”
Millions of Americans who lost their jobs in this economic crisis depend on unemployment and health insurance benefits to get by as they look for work and get themselves back on their feet. I’m grateful that the House and Senate moved forward on this temporary extension today. But as I requested in my budget, I urge Congress to move quickly to extend these benefits through the end of this year. I also urge Congress to move forward on legislation to help small businesses grow and hire and other measures to increase the pace of job growth. This is my top priority, and I will fight day and night until every American who wants a good job has one.
The temporary extension — which allows unemployed workers who’ve exhausted their state-based benefits to access emergency federal help through June 1 — is designed to buy lawmakers more time to negotiate the longer-term extension that Obama is urging.

The text of the bill says benefits are extended through May 5–why do all the reports say they are being extended until June? i am confused about this.

You're looking at the older version of the bill, which the House passed last month. The Senate yesterday substituted that bill for a new version, which added an additional month to the UI, COBRA and Medicare provisions of the original House bill.

I called a bunch of senators today to ask about a tier 5 extension and of course you get to talk to there aids . most of the ones I talked to said that the senate knows about our situation and are disusing it.but they say it's the money thing and the republicans that are standing in the way and there is not anything being put together on a tier 5 extension at this time. doesn't anyone in the government no how bad we are hurting[ I did bring this up to everybody I talked to today but just can't get any answers] or are turning a deaf ear. I'm sorry I just don't think we are going to see a tier5 extension or any other type of help. I hope the hell I'm wrong on this and it works out for us 99er's but my gut feeling tells me it's not going to happen. if someone out there knows anything that I don't and it's good news please share with us we need a pick me up. I'll never give up calling and e- mailing for a tier 5 and hope nobody else does either It's all we got right now. I can't survive much longer till I'm on the streets living out of my car. never in my life did I think this would ever happen in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Our Country is in an extremely volatile and frightening state right now. The long-term unemployed are in a constant struggle to receive unemployment funds. Our government has turned their backs on the thousands of long-term unemployed throughout our country. The vast majority are older men and women who have spent their life as a loyal employee: These are the men and women, dads and moms, who have helped to make our Country great. The economy had gotten so bad that their employers could either lay off some of their workforce to survive, or close down their business all together. As we all know, many employers did both. Our country lost decade old corporations and businesses, as well as thousands of small businesses.
Bill HR4851 that the Senate passed is once again rather deceiving, as it has the public believing that it actually extends unemployment funds for all the unemployed. It does not!! This bill only extends benefits to the unemployed who have exhausted their standard 26 weeks of unemployment: It does nothing at all to help the long-term unemployed. Common sense will tell you that if unemployment is continually growing every week in large numbers, that there will be unemployed people who have not been able to find employment. Yet our Government will not acknowledge that fact that there is long-term unemployed people in our Country, as they would like you to believe the numbers are getting better. They Are Not!!
The Labor Department reported Thursday that first-time requests for jobless benefits rose by 24,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 484,000. This is the highest level since late February.
The major unemployment situation in our country should not be treated like the Hatfield & McCoys; the recently unemployed vs the long-term unemployed. Bill HR 4851 should have included jobless benefits for ALL the unemployed including the long-term. Bill HR 4851 should have included an amendment that specifically states additional weeks will be added to Tier IV, or will create a Tier V.
Give the jobless the peace of mind we deserve. Pass an unemployment benefit extension package that provides long-term financial relief for ALL of America's unemployed today!
If you are unemployed, please sign the petition requesting the creation of a Tier V. This petition is growing in massive number daily averaging over 1,000 signatures a day. Individual emails go out to the Administration, and Congress immediately when you sign.

Important Unemployment Insurance Benefit Notice
Updated April 16, 2010
Congress has passed an extension to the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC), the Extended Benefits (EB) program and the Federal Additional Compensation (FAC) portion of unemployment benefits. This temporary extension is retroactive to April 5 and will continue until June 2, 2010. It should be available on debit cards or bank accounts two to three days after that.
This authorization does not add any additional eligibility for individuals who previously exhausted their authorized unemployment benefits.

NAFTA has sent unemployment through the roof, we don't stand a chance. We the people must have congress repeal NAFTA and CAFTA. Then they can concentrate on protecting our borders and jobs, and do their job and remember the constitution is still valid, is it not.

We need to take care of our own, BEFORE, we take care of others from other countries. Billions of dollars are sent yearly to countries we have never even heard of. Please Congress, you are treading on thin ice, even you Republicans. We are being outnumbered by people from other countries who are getting the benefits of our great country, and our people are getting the short end of the stick. There are no jobs for (English only) people. Look at the job postings….look at the application. Just be aware that we are being outnumbered by people who are able to speak Spanish. It isn't about qualifications anymore!
