Justice Stevens to Retire This Summer
Friday, April 09, 2010 at 10:51 am
Justice John Paul Stevens confirmed today that he will retire this summer from the Supreme Court, reports The Associated Press.
The timing of the announcement is welcome news to President Obama and Democrats who risk losing seats in Congress in November’s elections. The vacancy is unlikely to change the court’s ideological makeup, since the president is expected choose a left-leaning replacement for the longtime liberal Justice.

since the president is expected choose a left-leaning replacement for the longtime liberal Justice.
That's a joke, right? The chances of Obama putting an actual liberal on the court seem as likely as actual healthcare reform, accountability for executive and other government crimes, real financial reform…
If it happens, it would be completely by accident.

God, this is going to get ugly. I'm afraid this is going to make the health care fight look like a walk in the park.

Justice Stephens was a pillar of liberalism during the Bush years when it would have been very easy to stand idly by and cave in the the pressure of the Bush administration on a number of issues. Although under Obama, someone similar will most likely be appointed to replace him, it is difficult to predict who this will be.
