Obama to Open Atlantic Coast to Offshore Drilling
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:14 am
This is bound to draw some fire from the left:
The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas drilling for the first time, officials said Tuesday.
The proposal — a compromise that will please oil companies and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of affected states and many environmental organizations — would end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean. [...]
The proposal is to be announced by President Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Wednesday, but administration officials agreed to preview the details on the condition that they not be identified.
The proposal is intended to reduce dependence on oil imports, generate revenue from the sale of offshore leases and help win political support for comprehensive energy and climate legislation.
If Obama’s goal here is to win support for a climate bill, wouldn’t he have waited to use this leverage until negotiations in the Senate had actually begun in earnest? Or has he already struck a deal with oil-state moderates like Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)?
In any case, reactions tomorrow will undoubtedly be fierce.

This should be done but not in exchange for some crazy cap and trade system that will start a carbon credit market, cause another trading derivatives meltdown eventually while in the meantime spawning fraud galore, and drive the prices of electric and gasoline/heating oil/gas through the roof. Don't take the bait, my friends. Especially since the Pacific Coast, the area with the most natural resources sitting there in capped wells, ready to go, and just waiting to be pumped out of the ground are off limits. California needs to stop the whining. They are broke, bankrupt. The USA is broke, bankrupt, capice? Get off the stick and get on the derrick!

I'm a right winger, and I like off-shore drilling…so I like Obama…now…yup.

Obama’s goal here is to win support for a climate bill. I think this is not a great idea. Now President Obama agrees with Pres. Bush, Republicans, Sarah Palin on drill, drill. Now is okay because, I read/heard, it is being done in the name of lowering gas prices, lowering energy costs, create jobs, move us towards energy independence, move towards an energy solution and whatever numerous other excuses everyone will fabricate to convince themselves that this drilling is needed. They might as well give Dick Cheney’s Halliburton the contract since Energy services/drilling is this company’s expertise and this company could hire many immediately since this is about Jobs also. Why don’t we just use the oil we supposedly stole from Iraq? Everyone accused us of invading Iraq for their oil which means there is no reason for this drilling. Let’s use the Iraq oil they say we stole. So much for all the petitions so many of us signed against drilling. Let me guess, now we won’t survive without this drilling. Next excuse.

After the gulf spill, betcha Obama backsteps away from offshore drilling. No way any Coastal congressman can support any off shore drilling bill near their home State. Looks likes they'll all become NIMBYs…
