Explaining Sarah Palin’s ‘Don’t Retreat, Reload’ Comment

By
Friday, March 26, 2010 at 11:20 am

I haven’t joined the dogpile on Sarah Palin’s response to the health care reform vote — she set up a page of vulnerable Democrats that displayed target signs on their districts — because Palin’s been using this rhetoric for her entire career in national politics. This tweet, for example, has quickly become infamous:

Picture 29

But that’s a reference to what, according to Palin, is a family witticism. The final chapter of “Going Rogue” begins with a quote from her father, Chuck Heath:

Sarah’s not retreating; she’s reloading!

I think Palin’s gotten tripped up by the same thing flummoxing other conservatives this week — in the context of angry threats against pro-health care Democrats, the revolutionary rhetoric of the GOP this last year sounds… well, revolutionary.

The problem though is that this language — which is ordinarily pretty anodyne — is aimed at a movement that has (maybe unwittingly) embraced violent, fringe elements. This is why it's problematic. See my thoughts at http://bit.ly/a3k6nW

When you take into consideration that she just today states that “Taking Up Arms” means “voting”, it is evident that she is deliberately phrasing things to rile people up.

Never in history has “Taking Up Arms” meant to get out and vote.

No no, you are all misunderestimating her here. She just means when you check out a web page that is a memory hog and difficult to load–Fox News is like that for my computers–don't “retreat” (to some other website), but “reload” the website into your computer's cache so you can read all that (to paraphrase Jon Stewart) “mm mm goodness” there!

Yesterday while driving to the grocery store a forty something successful looking man driving a $40,000 black pickup truck honked at me and yelled: “F**K Obama. I hope you die!” I saw his face and he was truly angry. All this because next to my American Quarter Horse Association sticket on my back window is my Obama Biden sticker from the election. I am not a liberal, but a moderate Democrat….and I couldn't believe that someone threatened me.

Assination Imagery

You know what Sarah Palin believes:
“Every communist must grasp the truth,
political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.”

Oh wait it's not Sarah who said that
I confused her with Chairman Mao.

Sarah uses the same exact rhetoric as Chairman Mao.
She pushes assination imagery by using the power of suggestion to:

“Don't Retreat, Instead RELOAD!”

It's ignorance talking out the side of it's mouth. Like Glenn Beck. Fox has become the center for fear and ignorance. He's convincing to the mob. With his chalkboard and the condescending (I don't know why they aren't insulted, I would be) manner in which he speaks, like he's addressing mentally-challenged children, appealing to the basest side of human nature, he includes himself like he's one of them.
Right. With his multi-million dollar home, he says things like; “I'm just a regular guy, like all of you out there”.
They'll never see the hypocrisy. He keeps them stupid. That's how he gets away with the things he does. Hitler knew all of this. Beck is no genius. He just took a page out of Hitler's playbook. Ever wonder why he dressed up in a Nazi uniform for the cover of his book? I don't.

Good article.

There are some small differences, though. As far as what's happening now, there seems to be a reversal of “titles”, shall we say? What I mean is, the use of terms like “socialist”, “fascist”, “communist”, “totalitarian”, etc., that have no relation to one another. It seems the people taken in by the rhetoric can't tell the difference, or maybe it's just a convenient way to “demonize” President Obama and the liberals/progressives.
Personally, I see a resemblance to Hitler's methods, prior to, and during his taking over Germany. The “fascist/nationalist” ideology is there. Others here see the same thing. Trouble is, the lessons of history are null-and-void. It is an enforced ignorance to that history. It is counter to the American ideal, but it doesn't seem to matter to them (the ones causing the trouble). It is “Goebbel's Axiom” all over again.
None of the responsible parties will man (or woman) up and not just stop, but discredit any of it. Glenn Beck is at the heart of it, I believe. His is the only rhetoric that espouses the Hitler ideology.
Any ideas?

Since their inception the Teaparty crowd (not a movement since they do have the numbers or clout) have been “haters not debaters”. In my opinion this is what the small portions of the republican party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” have brought you. They are good at “Follow the Leader” of their dullard leaders, they listen to Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush and Savage and the rest of the Blowhards. Are you surprise at what they do when you know what they think? The world is complicated and most republicans (Hamiliton, Lincoln, Roosevelt) believe that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now its about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. Although some republicans are trying to distant themselves from this fringe most of them are just going along and fanning the flames. Lets face it the Republicans had 8 years to deal with health care, immigration and financial oversight and governance and they failed. They could not even win one of the two wars they started, the body bags are still coming in. The Republicans wanted to give Obama his Waterloo defeat over healthcare but instead they gave themselves their own Waterloo defeat by not participating in the debate of ideas and by becoming the party of obstructionist. But they now claim they have changed, come on, what sucker is going to believe that?

Its this kind of hate filled rhetoric coming from Palin and the far right that contributed to the horrible Arizona shootings yesterday. Arizona is a mecca of prejudice and bigotry, so says a prominent Arizona sheriff. Its time America stood up and shut down Palin and other far right extremist.

The correlation between the rhetoric of Palin, Beck, and the others is obvious. The difference between the left and the right is that the left calls for peaceful resistance and civil disobedience while the right tacitly endorses armed violence. Hilter never fired a shot in WWII but 70 million died. Senator Kyle is an idiot.

The below is the dumbest comparison ever. We talk about targeting in marketing strategy all the time. It’s inappropriate for such a polarizing figure as Sarah Palin (a quitting Governor) to issue a map of people’s names and congressional districts with crosshairs over them. The shooting is not her fault, but it is short sighted for her to not acknowledge that her issuing a map full of crosshairs at the same time using “Don’t retreat..reload!” is socially irresponsible. It is only further proof she does not have the maturity that it takes to accept responsibility and move forward. Those are two redeeming qualities we would need in any of our nation’s leaders, Democrat, Republican or other.

Thanks for the link. I think the big difference here is that one is specifically targeting individuals, and the other is a strategy to reclaim states. Surely you aren’t claiming that the person who wrote this was “targeting” Florida, and as such, the correlation between the 2 graphics doesn’t exist – except with an ingenuous mental stretch.

What a stupid rematk. You Americans believe you’re a beacon of democracy, yet you call for the killing of oponents. Democracy is about dialogue and convincing, not about entrenchment and reloading weapons. Palin’s rethoric, Beck’s rants and Limbaugh’s delusions are exact copies of Hitler’s discourse in the 1920s and 1930s.

Franz Josef von Stauffenberg
Comment posted January 16, 2011 @ 1:23 pm

There is no comparison. Palin put crosshairs over specific districts and gave the names of people to be targetted. Then she asked people to reload [their guns]. As a follow up, Limbaugh asked specifically to kill liberals and Beck gave more names to be taken off (the foundation targetted in San Francisco). If that is not different from what you are trying to post, then a cow is no different from a shark (after all both are animals on planet Earth).. You are the liar; the one trying to deceive. But I guess this is typical of the American Talibans following extremists like the ones I just mentioned.

But people WITH jobs who are legally in this country are being denied healthcare in the process. The healthcare is for those with citizenship (illegals aren’t included in the statistics because we don’t actually have a tally for exactly how many illegals are in the country). What about those trapped in debt and poverty? We have better statistics for those. In fact medical bills were (and, I think, still are) the number one cause of bankruptcy in the US. Why is it okay for people to have to second-guess going to a hospital because they couldn’t afford the healthcare insurance and definitely can’t afford the ER bills?

Sarah Palin put someone in crosshairs, now that person has a bullet in her pip.

Somehow, not very different from the when the current South African president asked for a machine gun (before he became president), and the youth league went on about killing farmers.

However, the *tactics* employed by the teapartiers might have influenced the shooter:
