Pentagon Shooter Exploited Gun-Show Loophole
Monday, March 15, 2010 at 4:00 pm
John Patrick Bedell, who shot and wounded two police officers near the Pentagon earlier this month, bought at least one of his 9 mm guns at a Nevada gun show, The Associated Press reported yesterday.
Law enforcement officials say Bedell, a man with a history of severe psychiatric problems, had been sent a letter by California authorities Jan. 10 telling him he was prohibited from buying a gun because of his mental history.
Less than three weeks later, Bedell bought a 9 mm Ruger at a Las Vegas gun show by exploiting one of the largest loopholes in the nation’s gun control laws: While federal law requires licensed gun dealers to perform background checks on all prospective gun buyers, unlicensed sellers — like those who often set up shop at roaming gun shows — are exempt. The background checks are designed to prevent sales to those legally ineligible to own guns, including felons, illegal immigrants and, like Bedell, the severely mentally ill.
Several bills floating around Congress would subject unlicensed vendors to the same background check rules as licensed sellers. Considering the political environment on Capitol Hill in recent years, however, even sponsors of those proposals concede that they’ve got no chance of passing anytime soon.

Just wait until the SCOTUS “incorporates” the 2nd Amendment to the states. Then any background check can be challenged as unconstitutional. Way to go Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Kennedy.

It's not a “loophole”…most states do not require any type of background check for a transaction from one private seller to another. Doesn't matter if you met at the gun show, shooting range, grocery store, etc. Just this past weekend I bought a firearm from a private seller and we did the transaction in a gas station parking lot…PERFECTLY LEGAL. If it is the law, it is not a “loop hole”.

How about the 80,000,000, yes that’s 80 million, gun owners who did not shoot anyone last year, or the year before that, or the year before that and so on. What happened was sad, but law abiding gun owners are citizens also and should not have to be punished for actions of criminals anymore that law abiding car drivers should be punished with extreme restrictions because care are used by criminals in the commission of crimes where people are killed.

How exactly, would gun owners be punished by closing this loophole?

How about the 220,000,000, yes that’s 220 million, people who don’t own guns and therefore had no way to shoot anyone last year, or the year before that, or the year before that and so on? Personally, I think most people who own guns, law abiding or not, are a bit nuts. In fact, statistics show that the vast majority of gun owners are much less educated than non-gun owners. That fact makes it even scarier to me…many gun owners are also stupid.

“In or about 2006, there were about 60 million (actually closer to 58M, but we’ll use the rounded-up number to be kind to hoplophobes) people in the UK as a whole, including Scotland.
In England and Wales alone — discounting Scotland — there were over 163 thousand knife crimes.
By the end of 2006, there were more than 300 million people in the US as a whole.
In the US as a whole, there were fewer than 400 thousand gun crimes.
In the UK, based on these numbers, there was one knife crime committed for every 374 people (rounded down).
In the US, based on these numbers, there was one gun crime committed for every 750 people — less than half a gun crime per 374 people (about 0.4987 gun crimes per 374 people, actually).
That means that, based on these statistics, you are more than twice as likely to be a victim of knife crime in the UK as you are to be a victim of gun crime in the US….”
Criminals will always use whatever is more convenient, and what they have access to. If you ban guns, they will simply use knives, or a baseball bat, what would you do if guns were banned, and knife crimes doubled, ban knives? What you need are stiffer penalties for those criminals who use firearms in crimes, don’t punish the law abiding citizens who only want to protect their family….

spoken like a true liberal. You must have voted for Obama. He is giving it to you right in the neck and so will his liberal gun hating buddies like George Soros and the Brady Bunch. I do not know of any case where a gun owner with a CCW shot and killed anyone except in self defense or defense of another innocent bystander. Read the Facts Stupid! Like during the last LA Riots, many of the people I know, so called Liberals were calling and asking me to lend them a gun. Are you stupid or something? Mamma always said, “Stupid is what Stupid Does!” Well Gomer, defend yourself with liberal bull and leave the honest gun owners alone for once!

It amazes me that as soon as someone mentions “guns” some folks come out of the woodwork like paranoid crack addicts! Obama hasn’t made one move to “take your precious guns away!” Check it out. Making stricter laws shouldn’t be a worry for any citizen. No record? No troubles? Then you will get your weapons fix. All of a sudden the words “Commy” and “Stupid” show up when anyone brings up safety issues. How many people were in the paper last year because they defended their homes and families with guns? How many were noticed becasue they committed crimes with them? You keep your guns. Live in your paranoid state and leave the rest of us alone. By the way-get an education. Using 6 exclamation marks at the end of a sentence and calling people names doesn’t mean you are right. It proves you don’t have much insight and a small vocabulary to work with…Your petty thoughts are more harmful than guns.
You are disturbed.
