Republicans Pick First-Time Candidate for Murtha Seat
Friday, March 12, 2010 at 8:51 am
By a nearly 2-1 margin, Republican conferees chose first-time candidate and small businessman Tim Burns to run in the May 18 special election for the seat formerly held by John Murtha. Democrats earlier this week selected their nominee — Mark Critz, Murtha’s former district director — and like Republicans they face an awkward situation as the candidate Critz defeated plans to run for the full term as a candidate in the regularly scheduled primary. But the Republicans, having stiffed 2008 candidate Bill Russell, have a little more angst ahead of them.

Tim feels this way: Legislative
When our founding fathers gave birth to this great country, they never envisioned new bills in congress that were thousands of pages long. The Stimulus Package was over 1,400 pages. It was printed at midnight and by morning, Congress was voting on it. Not one member of Congress read the bill before voting on it. I believe all members of Congress and interested Americans should have ample time to read and understand the contents of a bill before it is voted on. As a Congressman, I would fight to ensure both Congress and America have the time to read and understand bills before being voted into law.

The process for choosing the GOP nominee for the special election could not have been more transparent or open. EACH of the candidates was given the opportunity to address the conferees and field their questions. It was at this time that the conferees were able to judge for themselves the viability of the candidates and their strength to carry the message of smaller govt. The choice of Tim Burns as nominee for the special election is entirely due to the fact that he convinced the conferees that he was the best candidate for this job.

if those raucous responses came as surprises last year, they’re pretty rote now.
