Did Kucinich Set Back Anti-Afghanistan War Cause?
Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) went forward with a resolution calling for an end to the Afghanistan war yesterday. Predictably, it earned massive and bipartisan rebuke, moving Congress decidedly behind President Obama’s Afghanistan strategy. Tom Hayden observes:
Strong Kucinich supporters will feel vindicated that their hero took a lonely stand and forced the House to a moment of choice. Critics will note that a dubious war has been legitimized, and that it will be more complicated for those who voted “aye” to reverse course in the months ahead.
So if you oppose the Afghanistan war, is it supposed to comfort you that Kucinich “took a lonely stand” that made your cause more difficult to achieve?

Critics will note that a dubious war has been legitimized…
Tom needs to get out more. That train sailed a long time ago. All of our “dubious wars” enjoy massive and bipartisan support, along with all the unConstitutional activities associated with them.
Blaming Kucinich for Obama's, and the Dems, platform of bipartisan war support just seems really weak, and a little foolish.

I think even a basic point like this is going to be lost on the minds that haunt the Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinich foreign policy ghetto.

Utter nonsense that I'm surprised to see in these pages. In what way has ending the war been made more difficult to achieve by debating and voting on it? We now know with clarity who is for it and who is against it when push comes to shove; the points made on the floor are part of the record; people who believe the war is a mistake kept faith with their constituents. That's all part of organizing and improving the result the next time.

It comforts ME that Congressman Kucinich continues to set an example for courage and integrity–an example that other 'Democrats' would do well to emulate. If the rest of these 'rhetorically' anti-war candidates were willing to stand on principle instead of strategizing for the next election, they might have a better chance of re-election.
