Media at the Tea Party Convention

NASHVILLE — The National Tea Party Convention’s early reluctance to give credentials to reporters — a decision that came after some negative commentary on the event’s cost and critics — was short-lived. Reporters are swarming the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and, with little exception, getting press passes. When I checked it around 11 a.m., more than 150 reporters had been credentialed. While there are around 600 paying attendees, the scene in the hall outside of the banquet and meeting rooms is basically one-to-one reporter-to-attendee. Inside the breakout sessions, at least three cameras are filming at any one time.

One of the credentialed reporters is no less than Joseph Basel, one of the four activists who was arrested — and let out on bail — for the mysterious botched sting of Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) office. “I’m here for myself,” Basel told me, after chatting with Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit and Andrew Breitbart of Big Government.

Wow, what a turnout. 600 people! The masses descending on Nashville. How will the city ever handle so many people at once? Think Faux News will show tape of other events with thousands and thousands of people instead of actual attendees on this one? And isn't it wonderful to know we still have people that will do anything they can to keep certain people from voting? The former representative should be careful of what he wishes for. A great many of those voting on his side don't have a real clue about about the realities of what they are voting for. Like the tea partiers who don't want the government in their health care and they are on Medicare. Talk about not understanding what they are voting for! They vote for the party who didn't even want to have a Medicare program. Guess they can't understand they are voting to chop themselves off at the ankles. And Tancredo wants civic fitness tests? He knows not what he asks for!

That's wild. When you think that every year Netroots Nation gets five times that number of people and how many reporters? You have to wonder how much of this Tea Party movement is pumped up by the media. It reminds me of a pro-health care march last spring of maybe 1000 people. All the press coverage that day was of a hundred or so Tea Baggers somewhere. Something ain't right with this, Dave.

So, basically Basel gets to attend the event for free because he's a “journalist” representing “himself”?

Man, the people who paid $500+ to attend this conference were suckers.

I wish there was more photo and video coverage. I love seeing the crowds with odd shaped heads and the latest variations on clothes made from American flags. The interviews are always great with the southern drawls and incomprehensible sentences. Since carnivals no longer have freak shows, this is as close as you're going to get.
