The Committee for Truth in Politics Pre-Emptively Attacks Wall Street Reforms

Two great catches by Ben Smith — and more by his commenters — reveal that the little-known Committee for Truth in Politics is running ads that frame proposed financial regulatory reform as, paradoxically, “one big bailout” for banks. The ads are running in Pennsylvania, Montana, North Dakota and Colorado, and they crystallize an attack that Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) made against the House’s version of reform, passed in December: that it was a “permanent bailout bill” because it created a closely regulated fund that could be tapped for future bank emergencies. (Frank Luntz used crisper language in a memo to Republicans.)

Isn't this ad by the same people who successfully sued in the US Supreme Court and the Court removed almost all restrictions on money in politics? Why isn't there any more information in the disclaimer that the Committee name? At least on the internet you CAN find out who these people are, sort of, but how do you write them and tell them how reprehensible you find them to be? I fear this is just the start of all kinds of crap. Politics just got worse!

The Committee for Truth in Politics does not know what TRUTH is!! How anyone could elect or re-elect any of these Republicans who have done everything in their power to prevent our elected President from achieving what the American people elected him to achieve, is beyond me. This ad is disgusting, and I hope it backfires. The names and true affiliations of these undermining, subversive, power hungry, dishonest, and reprehensible folks should be in large, bold print, and the inconsistencies of their negative diatribe exposed for what it is.

It was revolting to look at the glum and pouting faces of Republicans during the President's State of the Union Address. They could not acknowledge our President in a positive way . They just want him to fail. The Country is second to their power structure. They are a frightening group, and I hope the Senator from MA has the fortitude and strength not fall in line with their destructive agenda.

This ad just showed up in Wisconsin. They show predominately Democratic candidates to obfuscate the fact that the Republicans will give in to the same lobbyists- but tenfold. Ask your neighborhood Republican't where was the fiscal restraint during the last administration and when conservatives were in power. You know the answer- it wasn't there. John — Madison, Wi

This ad has run three times in the last 30 minutes (6:00 – 6:30 p.m.) on WGN in Chicago. It ends with instructions to call Senators Durbin and what's-his-name.

Committee for Truth in Politics. They have a very ironic sense of humor.

This ad is running every half hour in Springfield,Illinois. Just like the republicans to put a spin on a bill that actually will protect the people of this country from unethically bankrupt corporations.

The 'bailout' ads are also running in Illinois… saw it during a NASCAR race today. (yes we are actually 'liberal' democrat family that watches races…) For a group who's name tries to make you think they are all about 'truth' – man are they off track. This group is just more proof that we do need better regulation in advertising related to politics and elections – another reason some major push back needs to happen with the recent Supreme Court decision that will let corporations pour millions into advertising…

Just saw the ad tonight during the late local news, and I saw it yesterday too. It is so transparently biased against Democrats (the only pols depicted in it) – but with the red meat teabag themes is sure to get those yokels – as well as plenty of uncritical viewers – up in arms and mobilized.

As we have known for years, the big lie works, especially a negative scare ad. I notice this group so concerned with “exposing the truth” has refused to say who is funding the ads.

I saw the ad tonight in Pennsylvania. I knew at first sight that it would take some research on my own to figure out if HR 4173 is actually good for the country, or conversely, merely good for the big banks and the politicians that they purchased. I do not trust the Democrats who generally seem to be favoring the bill. I do not trust the Republicans who generally seem to be opposing the bill. After returning from a year of military service against very real enemies overseas, I have come to the conclusion that both parties are likewise genuine enemies of the American People. So what is the truth about the Committee for Truth in Politics, their ad, and HR 4173? I do not know yet. None of it passes the smell test. But I do know this: IF THERE IS AN ECONOMIC COLLAPSE OF THIS COUNTRY, BOTH PARTIES, AS WELL AS THEIR WALL STREET BACKERS, SHOULD BE VERY, VERY, VERY AFRAID OF MEN LIKE ME.

The Committee for –blah-blah-blah refuses to obey any of the Federal Election Commission’s rules for disclosure and have a history of running false and misleading ads, so much for truth. As to H.R. 4173 here are a couple of resources…

Saw the add 1/2-dozen times in Wisconsin. This ad is a 'cover' ad for all the Neo-Con Fringe who seek to destroy any government (Especially any run by a Democratic Party, since they never criticize Republicans) in the USA as 'bad' because they can't control it to their advantage.

the bill will create a new regulatory body that we sorely need-one that aims to keep banks and such in check-you should read up on Elizabeth Warren and what she has done to try to get on top of this stuff-she recently said “if we do not do this it may be the end of the middle class” or “it will be the end of the middle class” I think it was the last one

she's head of the “congressional oversight panel” which has been trying to get us (or find the best ways) to get us out of the mess the banks et al finagled for us-i like her a lot, she's smart and knows her shit, and tells it like it is

http://cop.senate.gov/

from their site:
“About the Congressional Oversight Panel
In response to the escalating crisis, on October 3, 2008, Congress provided the U.S. Treasury with the authority to spend $700 billion to stabilize the U.S. economy. Congress created the Office of Financial Stability (OFS) within Treasury to implement a Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). At the same time, Congress created a Congressional Oversight Panel (COP) to “review the current state of financial markets and the regulatory system.”
COP is empowered to hold hearings, review official data, and write reports on actions taken by Treasury and financial institutions and their effect on the economy.
Through regular reports, COP must:
Oversee Treasury’s actions
Assess the impact of spending to stabilize the economy
Evaluate market transparency,
Ensure effective foreclosure mitigation efforts
And guarantee that Treasury’s actions are in the best interest of the American people.
Lastly, Congress has instructed COP to produce a special report on regulatory reform that will analyze “the current state of the regulatory system and its effectiveness at overseeing the participants in the financial system and protecting consumers.”

I know, we need more govt like we need more bankers and oilmen, but somebody has to try, right? since business eats itself and us

this is illustrative:

It's probably technically illegal but big business has been getting away with this for sometime. We need to get the New Republicans completely out of power in order to place sensible restrictions on the power of corporations which have no conscience or soul. It is very important to have a congress that stops corporate lobbyist from ruining our democracy. Get out the vote for the next election and wipe the bastards out of government.
