James O’Keefe and Ben Wetmore Get Married

Ben Wetmore, the 28-year-old conservative activist whom James O’Keefe called a “mentor,” has stayed out of the headlines since it was revealed that he housed O’Keefe and the other participants in the bungled sting of Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) office. When I reached Wetmore by phone yesterday, he politely declined to talk about the situation until it settled down.

Still, the Wetmore-O’Keefe friendship was, in gonzo journalism terms, a productive one. In 2008, after O’Keefe had left the Leadership Institute, the two men recorded hidden camera video of themselves going to three state offices in Massachusetts, applying for marriage licenses, openly admitting that they were straight men who wanted to get married to take advantage of the benefits.

O’KEEFE: We probably plan on doing this for about a year and then..
CLERK: And then, divorcing.
O’KEEFE: Right.
CLERK: Yeah.
WETMORE: Yeah.

The closest thing O’Keefe and Wetmore got to an ACORN moment was a Worcester, Mass., clerk admitting that she wasn’t telling a supervisor about their meeting because she didn’t want to get in trouble. Because the gag didn’t go any further, the stunt got little media attention. Fourteen months later, it reveals just how close O’Keefe and Wetmore were.

Here’s the video:

What does that prove? Have a man and woman never married for anything but love? When I filled out my marriage license application, I don't recall any boxes to check off affirming the reasons for marriage…I just had to show documentation that I didn't have Syphilis.

Heterosexual couples get married for bizarre reasons all the time…insurance, immigration, convenience…

And they did this why? People get married for financial reasons *all* the time – I know two heterosexual couples who married for insurance reasons, and one that married so the wife could get a green card. All three couples were eventually planning to marry, but advanced their plans by months, possibly years, for the financial and health benefits allotted to married couples.

Personally I think it would be hilarious if someone found their Massachusetts marriage license and posted it on line without explanation. So much for their glorious career as inept political pranksters.

Actually, I knew a couple where the woman paid the guy to marry her. They planned to get their divorce as soon as she got her green card. It so happened that they decided to stay married even afterwards but…

This says more about their lameness than it does about anything they are trying to expose. And since neither of them have ever had girlfriends I think they kind of enjoyed themselves. Now that information is coming out about O'Queef being involved with white supremacists all their anti-gay, anti-black stuff all fits together. What an f*ckin DORK. Racist, homophobe DORK. Don't forget to pack your mudflap Dorkboy. Naw better pack two in case one gets worn out.

I was thinking that since they swore to their statements in apply for these licenses and paid up, not only are they married in different states, but seems to me could be found for fraud, perjury and of course, in areas where gay marriage is illegal, for being bound illegally.

In all reality, the whole thing could have really backfired because pursuing them for being married while gay might work against them, exposing how stupid the whole law is anyway. The media was being kind to them to ignore this and should have exposed it thoroughly.

I can't help but feel that they got a bit of a tingly sensation in “pretending” to be gay; the excitement of doing bad. Wonder if they carried that ruse further while alone?

Par for the course – by now it's pretty obvious that this guy would gladly put a bone through his nose & bite the heads off chickens if it got him on TV or offered him the means to solicit money from suckers.

Remember, O'Keefe is what FOX calls “the future of journalism” … ignorant & infantile stunts like this are the only thing he's ever done. He's never researched a real article, never broken a real story, & never had an iota of credibility or integrity in his entire “career.”

So two people who weren't in love, got married just for the benefits.

Congratulations, you just did the same thing that half the idiot Privates in my platoon did before we deployed to Iraq.
